: Poll: What would you do if you found a wallet with $50 + IDs?

yson_3
04-28-2009, 12:16 AM
In light of me having dropped my wallet outside my house while getting out of my car... and having it disappear when I ran back 20 minutes later....

I've become really curious as to what the members of this forum would HONESTLY do if they came across someones wallet.

You can respond here, or answer the poll link anonymously

HERE:
http://www.acepolls.com/polls/887978-what-would-you-do-if-you-found-a-wallet-with-50-ids-infront-of-a-house-with-a-drivers-license

(Revscene apparently doesn't allow polls anymore so I provided a link to an outside polling site)

Update: Wallet was returned by neighbor, gave him 20 bucks for his good deed. :D

Prolly call them if I found some sort of number, or name for Facebook, etc. if there wasn't an address in there somewhere.

doesn't matter how much money in there. I would never take the risk keeping a lost wallet.

my family went out for dinner one night, and as we were walking back to the car we found a shitload of cards and 200$ cash. went to the owners house to try and drop it off but she wasn't home. found some cops in a local cafe and we just gave it to them. a day later, the lady called back and said thanks.

Sounds like a trumped up charge to me though. Don't know whether it would actually hold up in court. I don't know if you're legally obligated to return a wallet you found...

I once drove from PoCo to Chinatown to return a guys wallet and +/- $40. IIRC he dropped it while getting on a bus after work.

i'd keep the cash, only because thats what happened to me. i ended up getting everything back in the mail minus my wallet and cash a month later

by that time i replaced everything already.

Yeah, definitely return the wallet in its entirety. However, a lot of petty people out there who would take stuff worth a lot less. =(

exact same thing happened to me before.
$50 in wallet with my ID's.
Ended up getting a letter in the mail from police telling me to pick up something of my possession about 2-3 days after.
Got my wallet back from the police station by DTES with the cards shuffled around inside and money missing.
Better then losing all my ID and having to replace them all.

I'd return it all.

Hate to think that honestly is no longer a trait found in a human being even though people today are the cesspool of shit that make up society. There can't possibly be a good reason not to return another person's belongings.

I'd take the money.

Then I would mail the wallet to the address on the ID. Or I would drop it in the person's mailbox

nope, your have the obligation to return it to the owner or police. It has not been abandoned yet. If you get caught, you will charged with stolen lost property or theft.

just throw the wallet into any mailbox and let the post office take care of it

how about throw your kid into any mailbox and let the post office take care of it.

From what I know, they will send the ID back only if it is not inside a wallet.
Or else it will be forward to the nearby police station, and the owner will take
forever to get it back.

Just take the time to look up the person's phone number and tell them to meet you at a time and place convenient to you. I've never found anybody's wallet before but having lost mine once I was glad someone at least dropped it off at the lost and found with nothing missing inside. I've found 2-3 cell phones before and when I gave them back to the owners they end up being grateful about it.

Well one thing is it's the easiest way to get a wallet back to somebody. Go to police station and say you found a wallet, they keep it at their property office at 312 main st and call owner to come pick it up.

I had my wallet stolen about 10 years ago, and a few months after I replaced all my ID, cards, etc, it arrived in an envelope from Canada Post. I guess someone chucked it in the mailbox and it eventually found it's way home.

About two years ago, my wallet fell out of my pocket as I got into my car at Lordco. It had about $160 cash in it. Got home and realized it wasn't there. Drove back (about 40 minutes had elapsed at this point). I got out and started looking around. A guy walked over and asked if I'd lost a wallet. Everything was still there, all the cash, ID, cards. I offered him a good chunk of the cash as a reward, but he turned it down. He said he'd lost his wallet before, and know what a pain in the ass it was to get everything replaced, and he didn't want to see anyone else go through that. Needless to say, if I find someones wallet, I'm getting it back to them intact

I've found 2 wallets in my life. I returned both of them with money included to the police.

Both I found were young girls wallets. I can tell you if I opened the wallet and out popped $1000 with a picture of a guido, I definitely wouldn't return it.

Pretty much the same idea. I lost my wallet one day while filling up gas at Chevron by Marine and Main St. Went back 20 mins later and no one turned it in. :( I was such a bitch trying to replace everything. I would never want to go through that again and hope no one else will either.

Back in my college days, I was leaving class and driving through the lot. Looked to my right and saw a nice white Integra. Right beside the driver door laid a wallet sitting upright. Picked it up, left a note and got a call a few hours later.

Returned the wallet to the owner, and it turns out he was an RS member too. He was nice enough to offer me some cash for my time and help, but I refused. Nice guy, forgot his name now.

Karma is a bitch.

I lost my wallet when I was in my teens with over $400 in it outside a Mac's on the North Shore. I was getting ready to buy House Paint and Supplies with it for a Condo Painting job.

Some woman called me up to come collect it at her house and everything was there! Needless to say I bought her a thank you card + a bottle of nice wine.

Since then I have found many wallets over the years and have returned all of them. Funny how a life lesson when young impacts you as you get older.

Good luck on getting your wallet back OP.

return it, $50 is not worth having a bad conscience.

I lost my wallet at school when I was younger and I found it at the lost and found with cash still intact. I hoped I'd find it, and was really surprised and happy when I did.

I'd feel all warm and fuzzy inside knowing someone else might feel the same way I did when they find theirs returned intact.

I'd return it to the address on the license I wouldn't even have to think about it.

I have a friend in Calgary that found a wallet last month with over a grand in it. Returned it to the owner, got a bunch of karma and wouldn't accept a reward.

I've had my wallet stolen before, and yes, it's a pain replacing the cards/IDs. I could care less about the money as I don't carry more than $40-60 tops, on me at any given time.

That being said, if there's ID in the wallet, I'd return it. I found some lady's wallet in Chilliwack before, with about $800 in it, plus her ID, etc. and even her car keys. Happened to be in Walmart at the time. Took it to one of the workers, got them to page the lady, and made sure she got the wallet back.

OP here:

I've found wallets and phones in the past, and have always made sure to locate the owner and return the items.

This is now my 2nd time I've lost my wallet only to never see it again. While I recognize that its my irresponsibility, I've truly realised now that there are way too many selfish people in this city. My opinion: you have got to be major scum not make an effort to return an addressed wallet - ESPECIALLY the IDs.

I wouldn't even think twice about if I came across somebody else's... but i guess its the sad reality of things.

Kudos to the majority of people on revscene who have morals, and don't fall in the category of scum. To the rest of you... I hope you get hit by a car. In the mean time, I'll be at ICBC signing up for another drivers license...

I'd return the wallet with everything in it.

I thought someone had stolen my wallet in NYNY hotel in Las Vegas a few summers ago. Was gonna report it to security, but by then, someone had found and returned it! Turns out I had dropped it while waiting to get on the Manhattan Express roller-coaster.

If I had truly lost it, I'd be screwed since we had gone down to LV by car and I was one of the main drivers.

I lose stuff, but usually it comes back. I once dropped my car fob in the elevator, and the person who found it put in the effort to post up a couple notes to track down the owner. I appreciated it, and bought him a case of beer.

People need to think about and understand the frustration of losing something. Is keeping a bit money worth it in the long run? It could be a couple bucks or even a couple hundred bucks. In the whole scheme of things, it's not a lot of money. Get it back to the owner. It's not yours anyways. Call it karma. Call it reaping what you sow. The universe will make sure you get what's coming to you.

Depends... if the wallet belongs to a hot girl or decent I would call them and have them come over and pick it up =D.

If it is some guy I would just give it to the police.

If it belongs to a fat/ulg/my enemy hell I would keep the money and post all thier CC info aand all contacts online and screw them =D

I would return the wallet and everything, i know how shitty it feels to loose something. I lost my phone at the club once and i never got it back. I hope that guy that took it burns in hell.

My sister found $5000 in cash once in an envelope. She returned it, cause there was a paper with the persons information in it. When he showed up to pick it up he didn't even give her anything in return, what a fucking cheap ass.

Hey, returned a wallet once and the dude gave me $25 back. There was around 100 dollars in there. What a nice guy.

To be honest, I think I would return it.
After giving some thought, even though it's tempting, I would return it because I don't think I could live with the guilt of stealing somebody else's stuff.

If it had ID in it, it makes it even worst, knowing exactly who I'm stealing from.
And if there was more cash in there, the more paranoid it's some gangsters' wallet and he's gonna hunt me down somehow... lol
