i would like to watch streaming video of episodes of tv shows that i've missed but i can't because it says US residents only... how does it determine that i'm not american, and is there a way around it?

Hotspot Shield (http://hotspotshield.com/) works nicely. My co-workers use that to watch the Office on NBC's website.

Through your ip address

Like Presto said, Hotspot Shield is the way to go. Easy to install and easy to use.
