Why not get a netbook? They can do all the stuff you want, and it's easier to tote around compared to a full size notebook.
^ +1. :)
I posted in netbook thread already....
Just got a pink Aspire One 160GB/1GB/XP Home/3Cell for $280 from staples with $50 off coupon and it was delivered within 24 hours.
Other colors are $10 more I believe.
NCIX has U100 for 2 batteries (9 cells[6.5 hours] + 3 cells [90minutes]) for $419 this week starting today.

i was thinking netbook but i wanted a slightly bigger screen, optical drive. i figured this is like a netbook but with 14.1" screen + optical drive, but not quite a full laptop. i could upgrade the ram to 2gb i think.

I got the same one. Was looking at a netbook but the screen is too small. Works with one gig but I later added 2 more gigs for $25. Paid $399 plus taxes @ Best Buy.
Vista is the main thing I would stay away. :p
Battery life is much longer on netbook with 6 cell.
But if you don't mind the weight (more than 2x heavier), then sure, it's a good price too. :)

ya i prefer XP but it seems almost everything but netbooks have vista. i dont mind the weight or battery life. the laptop would most likely be stationary most of the time.

would it still be slow with 2 gigs of ram? i wont be doing any gaming, no big apps. really just firefox, media player, msn, few small things.

Took me about 5 min just have to remove 5 small screws to open the back panel. It's 1 stick of ram in there. I added a 2 gig stick.

oh okay so there is only 1 slot available. so with the 2gig does it run better or is it still slow?

it won't be slower than the atom cpu. Just learn how to keep your system clean, and you won't have any trouble.
4400mAh and 6 cell won't last longer than nettop with same battery, if you don't carry it around often, then this one is a very good choice

much better than Vista home premium. But it's still slower than xp.
make sure you turn off many un-necessary programs and keep it clean.
