"I recently bought a macbook at Best Buy (Nearest apple store is not near, got assaulted by reciept checker, but that's another story) The checkout people would not let me open the box until I had paid for it, and they made sure to tell me that as soon as I opened it is subject to a restocking fee. They found it really odd that I wanted to check it."
Bestbuy FAIL, you should be able to verify the contents of the package before you leave the store. Whenever you buy camera equipment from a good camera store they always crack open a brand new box and open it at the counter to verify you are getting what you pay for.

Alright, let's not jump to conclusions here. Plug it in, turn it on, and see if it does anything.

Stuff like this has been going on forever... and yeah, it's tough because the company would assume that the customer is trying to screw them.

Some people go to great lengths to scam big box companies. When I was with BB, we took a return for an expensive house phone. Sealed and everything. Until someone dropped it and we found out it was a giant block of wood inside.

The best one I ever had was a ps2 in a ps2 box when they were $500+. Except in the PS2 OEM shell was sandbags lol. They prolly just took the guts out and into a NON-OEM case.

You know, one of the problems is what if the item being returned was supposedly not opened? What if the person took it home, carefully opened it, took the contents and replaced it with fake items, then carefully repackaged it to look like it was still new? The store won't want to open it since they wouldn't be able to sell it as a new product anymore...

in my case, the ps2, it was the original OEM housing, and it weighed about the same, the only way to know is if they looked closely, the ports were taped up with black electrical tape from the inside

i swear when i bought my macbook at BB, it was opened b4 or a return,
when i opened the box, the manuals and cds were misplaced,
BUT, the seal on the box was not broken, the sticker was perfect,
no sign of it being even tampered with, and the macbook was perfectly sealed
in the protective sheet without creases or folds.

A heat gun can do wonders. I worked in a chinese computer store and they taught me all the tricks with opening boxes carefully and how to repackage and seal stuff so it appears brand new.
