Tempted to try this out, but I do not want to lose all my current data.
Key expires in June 2010. So roughly a year from now.

windows 7 is built on vista... just windows 7 is built by a new team instead of the vista team
vista team got fired same with the IE 8 team
Does the RC include the Media Center software?

Under "Here's what you need to know:"
Watch the calendar. The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start. To avoid interruption, you’ll need to install a non-expired version of Windows before March 1, 2010. You’ll also need to install the programs and data that you want to use.

i was about to download it for my Eee1000 until i heard about the 2 hour shut down gimmick.
ienhz
05-05-2009, 09:51 PM
That's because 7 should be out before March and they obviously don't want people to be using a RC forever. Why would you want to use an unfinished OS (that'll be stuck on build 7100) for almost a year anyways?
way2quik
05-05-2009, 10:04 PM
Yep.
The key expires in June, but March of 2010 is when the constant nagging begins advising you to uninstall or have a valid purchased key.

System Requirements
Here's what you need to have:
Internet access (to download Windows 7 RC and get updates)
A PC with these system requirements:
1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
1 GB RAM (32-bit) / 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
16 GB available disk space (32-bit) / 20 GB (64-bit)
DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
Please note these specifications could change. And, some product features of Windows 7, such as the ability to watch and record live TV or navigation through the use of "touch," may require advanced or additional hardware.
Its worth putting on an old laptop you may have laying around.

Vista Second Edition :p
Seriously.. it's been tweaked a bit and uses fewer resources but it's hardly a revolution.
Been using Vista on 3 computers for 2 years now with fewer problems than I had with XP. Just don't listen to all the Vista haters who are basing their experience on computers with 512 MB RAM and a pile of manufacturer-installed crapware.

I actually love Vista. Definitely less buggy and does not hang as much as XP.
I am currently using Win7 (dual boot), so I won't lose any current data I had/have with Vista.
First impression- I have no idea how to share/create a network amongst the 3 computers in the house. lol.
I don't really like the new taskbar/quick launch. I can never tell whether it's a tab or an actual quick launch icon. I guess Win7 takes time getting used to.
But FireFox looks more 'aero' like compared to when it's on Vista.
edit: i think win7 totally revamped the whole system tray / taskbar.

Yep, the taskbar was revamped, and IMO not for the better. Quicklaunch is gone (you can still make a quicklaunch toolbar but there is no preset for it) and I would rather they have added the multi-view thing that shows what IE tabs you have open to the current taxkbar layout.
Most people I talk to don't like Vista because it "looks different" and they would have to learn something new. Vista Second Edition will face the same struggle.

asian XL: I followed this tutorial. Dual boot worked flawlessly. Unfortunately, I didn't want to spend too much time re-learning how to use another OS, so I deleted the partition. Deleting Windows 7 also caused no problems in booting up Vista, my current OS. XP is also mentioned in the tutorial on how to uninstall.
http://www.techspot.com/guides/143-dual-boot-windows7/
My C:\ had 200GB free space so I partitioned (shrink Volume), which resulted in no data loss at all. Hope it all goes well.

7077 is pretty mint. it does load a lot faster, but i've had some issues with the taskbar being intrusive on VLC fullscreen.

Is it worth switching from vista to Windows 7? I can't get back into vista so i'm wondering if its worth it to just install windows 7. I have everything on different partitions so it shouldn't be a problem to just completely replace Vista. Would I have to reinstall everything again or can I just run the programs from a partition?

its worth getting alright, just back up your files you have in vista onto a CD and your fine. And yes you have to reinstall all your programs

^Alright thanks for the info. Luckily all of my documents and pictures are all on different partitions so I just need to create the DVD. Reinstalling the programs is going to be a toughy haha. Should be worth it in the end hopefully.
On a side note whats this talk about windows 7 being a whole lot expensive?

Assuming all data is on another partition, do you still have to re-install all your apps, drivers and change all your settings each time you upgrade?

I always do clean installs and never upgrade. If you upgrade all your installed drivers and apps should remain.

Did you upgrade your Vista to Win7?
'Cause it's recommended you do a fresh install of Win7 on a separate partition. That way, your current OS does not get wiped out. Unless you plan on buying Windows 7 then forget about your current OS

Windows 7 wasn't built "on" Vista. They were both build on the same kernel. Meaning they use the same core and explains why everything looks similar between the both of them. If it was built over Vista, it would have turned out to be worse. It's like Lotus. They use engines made by Toyota but yet they have an entirely different product.
In this case, it's what Vista should have been. A non-rushed OS.
I've installed Win 7 on my gaming rig and work laptop and both have installed perfectly fine with all drivers auto-detected and installed straight from the DVD. It also detected (on both machines) what hardware I was using and downloaded the latest updates.
Boot times is much faster. Operation is faster. And I can definitely tell that performance has definitely increased on the laptop. Vista was a piece of shit on my Dell but now it runs like a dream!

Different dev teams. Not fired. Just moved to different projects. You have to have more than one dev team working on various projects otherwise they wouldn't have new IP (intellectual property).
