Already got my 7:30PM friday ticket (digital presentation) for Scotiabank Theatre. Should have enough time to go grab a Japadog then line up. :) Going to be wearing my Enterprise "Sweet Ride" t-shirt. I figure my grade 3 TNG uniform with phaser and tricorder is a bit overboard. The only downside is that you have to be a pretty big Trekkie (i.e. like yours truly) to be able to get and fully appreciate the movie. Some parts of it I didn't like (i.e. the transporter effect, some of the plot), but overall it was EPIC.

...But i had a lot of fun watching this one.
This movie is one of the must watch summer movies.
I brought my friend (who has never seen any star trek episodes before) and he said it was a great movie.

VERY good. The first 15 minutes was fantastic.
HOWEVER, there's too much fucking cheese in this movie. All those bullshit old references ("I'm a doctor, not a physicist!", etc) were put in there simply to appease the Trekkie nerds. All that stuff seemed so awkward and out of place in a modernized action movie. I could've done without all that garbage.
I also didn't need to be told outright that this is an "alternate reality". I'm not retarded...thanks though, J.J. Abrams.

Is Star Trek playing in IMAX anywhere in Vancouver? It seems like it would be epic, but the only theatres in Canada I have found so far that are showing the IMAX version are in Ontario/Quebec.
Saw the movie tonight at Scotiabank theatre and it was awesome, totally fullfilled all my expectations. Would have liked to see more fans in costume though.

Exactly.
This is a very geek thing to say....but i am gonna say it anyways.
Star Trek and Star Wars, (i guess by coincidence) is in fact the same conflict we've seen for centuries....which is Science vs. Religion.
And its easy to sum up....Star Trek is to Science as Star Wars is to Religion. Both of them complete far fetched fantasies which support science/religion is the most powerful knowledge in the universe.
And for those who know their history, whoever read 'Angels and Demons,' or just watch cable television.....knows that Science and Religion have never ever got along.
This is the reason why a Star Trek follower will always be a 'Trekkie,' and a Star Wars follower will always be a 'Jedi Nerd.'
Its a present-day version for virgins about the whole Science vs. Religion discussion.

No idea, but i don't see the sign there anymore where the Main St/Science World location used to be. I guess they folded due to the attraction of the McDonald's close by. I believe the only Burger Kings remaining are Hastings near the PNE, Metrotown foodcourt (last Saturday told me they didn't have toys), Surrey near Central City on King George Hwy, and a few others in Surrey, Richmond, and Langley I think.

Apart from the random episode of TNG and DS9 I used to catch on TV while waiting for something better to come on, I've never really watched Star Trek. Well, apart from some of the movies. :lol Anyway, caught this movie this weekend and was absolutely blown away. I'd heard great reviews from both professionals and friends, so I went in expecting great things; luckily, my expectations were fully met. I'm sure if I were an actual Trekkie and followed everything closely I'd have some negative things to say, but since I'm not... I don't care! However, it seemed to explain the alternative timeline pretty well.
I am tempted to go see it again. :lol

i used to watch DS9 religiously. only because there was tons more fighting in it due to the jem'hadar war. more interesting than all the exploring and diplomacy nonsense in TNG or the forever-lost Voyager.
Anyway, yeah, the fanboys were pretty upset at some of the changes to the canon. i didn't mind it since i feel this movie is like a rebooting of the series.

See, I'm a trekkie (as opposed to Trekker; "Trekker" = ghey) from waaaaay back, and I loved the movie. Canon? Fuck canon. Trek canon has been blown out of the water so many times over the course of 40 years, it's not even funny. It's more shotgun than can(n)on (haw haw, get it?).
The movie was brilliant, especially in that it didn't pretend to to even try to follow canon, yet it gave a nod to it and addressed the very issue of not being able to follow it, pretty much all in one scene. They didn't spend half an hour spewing Treknobabble trying to explain it, they just covered it (without saying outright that they were trying to cover it), and moved on with the story.
That, to me, is genius. Everything in the story that COULD follow the original, did so faithfully. Anything that COULDN'T, they didn't even try... they just told the story. The characters and casting were all spot-on; the actors all paid faithful tribute to the original characters, without trying to copy the original actors.
Frankly, I think everyone involved with making this movie knew exactly how to handle it, and handled it all admirably. It must have been a joy for Nimoy to be a part of it as well.
One thing that had me worried leading up to it, based on the trailers, was the idea that all of the "classic" crew of the Enterprise all knew each other "from the beginning", as this is something that seems to happen a lot in these sort of stories... but they even handled that fairly well, and it didn't bother me at all. About the only thing that seemed a little off was how Scotty got added to the crew, but that was made up for by the "beagle" reference (if you haven't seen it yet, watch for that... it's hilarious).
From a life-long (nearly) Trek fan's perspective, I hereby declare this movie damn near perfect.

Well I can finally post here cuz I finally saw the movie last night. I avoided thread to avoid spoilers.
I don't think your going to find a bigger fan of Star Trek on RS than myself (I have Star Trek Tattoo's and have been in an episode as a Klingon) and my verdict is 2 Vulcan hand signs up.
The story was fantastic in that you don't have to be a Trek fan to even like the movie. They paid the original its fair share of tributes with awesome one liners at the perfect times. Cast was excellent my only gripe is Chekov (the actor's accent was fucking terrible) but other than that everyone was perfect. All in all the movie was way better than I expected it to be and I will be seeing it again in theaters this week lol.
Anyone else think the Romulans didn't really look all that Romulan? What was with the face tattoo's. There is a fairly solid look of Trek past that they should have followed. It would be like changing the look of Klingons now.

If you read the comic book prequel to the movie, you find out why the Romulans have shaved heads and tattoos. Its kind of ironic that you compared it to the look of the Klingons, which changed drastically from TOS to the movies.

Ok, for those who are not going to read the movie prequel comic, it explains the appearance of Nero and his crew of Romulans:
The comic is set several years after Star Trek Nemesis. In this time, Nero and his crew operate a simple mining vessel and look like common Romulans. The supernova occurs and destroys Romulus before Spock can stop it. Nero feels betrayed since he helped Spock collect the red matter in order to prevent the destruction of his home. As a lifelong reminder of the home planet they lost, Nero and his crew shave their heads and tattoo themselves. They then encounter a secret Romulan military outpost which offers to upgrade their simple mining vessel with advanced weapons and technology. Nero and his crew then go hunt down Spock and get trapped in the black hole which begins the movie.

i have a few questions... for you trekkies
okay, so they try to save romulus by making a blackhole in the middle of the romulan sun or whatever before it supernovas. uhh would that not just suck romulus in eventually anyways?
the huge blackhole they made at the end musta been huge. cuz it was all of the red matter right? they were going like max warp and they couldnt escape it, then what the fuck did they eject? the core? doesnt the core provide power to the ship? so they ejected the core WHILE going warp speed? or was the explosion itself strong enough to eject the ship away?
okok another question, if the core's energy is enough to blow up and eject something already trying to escape at warp speeds and eject it away from a huge ass black hole, uhhh why would the romulans even need red matter? wouldnt they just eject some core shit into planets cuz im sure that kind of energy it produces would be enough to destroy ANY planet easily, i mean c'mon, it was enough energy to propel a starship away from a huge gaping black hole. that kind of energy would be enough to destroy any planet...
RIGHT?
can replicators replicate recreational drugs?
when do they create holodecks?
can i get aids from a holodeck hooker if i turn off safety parameters or whatever?
shit all these unanswered questions hahaha.
edit: here's some more
do vulcans ever have fun? i mean, there must be a logical time to have fun right?
do human women get along with vulcan women? cuz i mean one is completely illogical and the other is logical right? or are vulcan women just as illogical as humans? LOL oh man

Those two are bromancing it up, but ZQ is bi, or so he thinks he is.
Your answers, Mr. Ulic:
okay, so they try to save romulus by making a blackhole in the middle of the romulan sun or whatever before it supernovas. uhh would that not just suck romulus in eventually anyways?
It wasn't that big LOL
the huge blackhole they made at the end musta been huge. cuz it was all of the red matter right? they were going like max warp and they couldnt escape it, then what the fuck did they eject? the core? doesnt the core provide power to the ship? so they ejected the core WHILE going warp speed? or was the explosion itself strong enough to eject the ship away?
Ejected cores then detonated them to make a bigger boom to go to faster warp...made no sense to me LOL
okok another question, if the core's energy is enough to blow up and eject something already trying to escape at warp speeds and eject it away from a huge ass black hole, uhhh why would the romulans even need red matter? wouldnt they just eject some core shit into planets cuz im sure that kind of energy it produces would be enough to destroy ANY planet easily, i mean c'mon, it was enough energy to propel a starship away from a huge gaping black hole. that kind of energy would be enough to destroy any planet...
RIGHT?
Wrong.
can replicators replicate recreational drugs? Only if you input the special password, "COMPUTER, exceute order 420-Alpha-Picard-Delta-2."
when do they create holodecks? 24th Century sometime.
can i get aids from a holodeck hooker if i turn off safety parameters or whatever? Yes, then you will have to go through holodeck AIDS therapy and suffer holodeck death.
shit all these unanswered questions hahaha.

was the movie really worth it?
yes, it's worth it. this movie didn't really feel like a science-fiction movie. it felt more like an action movie. great character interaction and development.
and Harold as Mr. Sulu? my friend was like, "maximum warp to White Castle!"
