Is it me or has 94 octane gas dissapeared? The last 4 gas stations i'v been to did not have 94. All the petros seem to have stopped selling it. hmmm? maybe only chevron has it now.

94 is a waste of money.
Sure, if you drive a low compression, naturally aspirated commuter car.
Put 91 octane in either of my cars, one which was tuned on 94 to 19psi with gobs of timing, the other, a high compression V8, and you'll be buying new motors soon.
94 has it's place. Your obtuse generalization reelks of ignorance and a lack of experience. Do us a favor and read more, post less.

There are some stations that still have 94 octane in Washington, and I think Sunco still have 100 octane, but those are becoming less and less.
I think Calif. went with 91 octane as being the highest grade available. There was a big discussion about this last year, IIRC.
And Manic is right. There is no need for 94 octane gas at the pumps. That's what home made octane booster is for. =P

Most people won't benefit from 94 octane. But most high performance sports cars REQUIRE higher octane fuel.

Now that Petro Canada got rid of the 94 octane, I hate getting 91 octane from there since it's the same hose that the 87 octane is coming out of. So the first few liters of 91 octane I'm buying is actually 87 octane :eek5r:

For California, 91 Octane is the highest octane pump gas available. There are some gas stations (76 comes to mind) that sell a higher octane for the Lancer Evo which I think is 98 or 10x octane but they come ONLY in a barrel.

No manufacture requires or recommends 94 oct in North America even Ferrari requires 91 oct. If you have had your car tuned for higher oct that’s a different story. I bet 99% of the owners who put 94 oct in there car don’t have there cars tuned for 94 so it’s a waste. Many provinces and stated don’t even sell 93 or 94 oct.
If Chevron stops selling 94 oct or you move to another province what will you do?
I remember a Harley owner who was out of gas and afraid to put 91 in his bike because he was told it would only run on 94. I asked him do people own Harleys in California because the only sell 91 oct down there. The guy stood there with a confused look on his face, put in a few $ gas and rode to Chevron.

Dear Mr bcrdukes,
Thank you for contacting Petro-Canada Customer Service. We appreciate your taking the time to write.
We are currently unable to serve you with gas and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. We are in the process of removing Super Premium 94, but we will continue to offer the other fuel grades.
Although we will no longer supply Super Premium 94 to the BC market, we feel that our Super 91 premium gasoline offers Canadian motorists what they need for their high performance vehicles. Super 91 is a high quality, top tier fuel that includes the Petro-Canada additive package to provide motorists with the premium gasoline they need for high performance vehicles.
If you still require Super Premium 94, some of our competitors offer the 94 octane product in BC (Chevron / Husky / Mohawk).
We appreciate your patronage and look forward to continue serving you.
Regards,
Tayo Ojuri

Well I'm no expert on this but i'm sure it has something to do with: The octane rating in fuel represents the fuel's resistance to detonation, that's why some of the higher end cars with a high engine compression ratio needs a higher grade gas so it doesn't detonate too early (knocking). This is the part i'm not sure, but I think if you put in say 94 in a corolla, the fuel will not be lit up at the right time, therefore lowing your performance as well as having left over fuel in your cylinder.
Rich Sandor
06-15-2009, 11:18 AM
^ yup.
If your car is meant to run on 87 octane, and you put in 94 octane, you will have unburnt gas in there because the 94 octane burns slower.
If your car is meant to run on 94 octane but you put 87, the gas will burn too quickly, and possibly cause detonation (knocking in the engine)
Now, some cars have knock sensors AND are able to advance/retard the timing automatically. For example the Lincoln MKS has hp ratings for regular octane and premium octane. (it's about 10hp difference for that car)
I was talking to the owner of super save gas last week, and we got to talking about "bad fuel" - a few things stuck in my head:
- It's very rare that a gas station's 94 octane isn't 94 octane. If tested, that's the MINIMUM that it must come back as. Most 94 octane fuel leaves the refinery at 97 or 98 octane to make sure that it's still 94 octane 6 months later when tested at the gas station. (the octane starts off real high, then drops fairly quickly, then plateaus)
- So when people complain of bad gas, it's unlikely unless the fuel has been sitting in the ground for a looooong time and / or there is significant moisture in the tank. Most gas stations will not caryy 94 octane if there isn't sufficient demand for it to be used up regularly.
- More common problems related to "bad gas" are water contamination. It's very likely that there is some water in your car's fuel tank - even if you don't think there is any, and even if you have run the tank empty.. there is probably still some water in the valleys and channels of the bottom of your fuel tank. The worst thing you can do in regards to fuel is run your car empty. Always keep a good 1/2 tank of gas in there.

thumbs up to you mister ... ive had the botom of the barrel gas from shell 91 and had clogged injectors blah... good way to tell if the gas is getting low at stations is that the pump is really slow compared to normal , when that happens i get the F outa there .

I rmb reading somewhere that 94 oct is usually 96-07 oct, where as 87 tends to ship as 87 and go down from there....
Talking about premium gas, I used to put only Chevron 94 in my 328i, then one day while running out of gas (the car was showing 0KM remaining) I went to Domo (too afraid of car stopping on me) and put 10 bucks in their premium (I think it was 92?) and I realize the car feels a lot more of power and roads where I usually do 10KM/L was doing 15KM/L on my console. (I'm pretty sure my driving habits didn't change in any major way, I still press lightly on the pedal)
From there on, I usually get 91 from Chevron but it still didn't feel the same as the one I got from Domo, next time I'm in Richmond, I will be visiting Domo again and see if it was just me..... :D

It acutally says it requires it for the z06, it is recommended for the camaro and trans am
From an actual Z06 technician:
All Z06's come with a recommendation for fuel with 93 octane. They can also handle E10 (gasoline with up to 10% ethanol added). The ECM is programmed for an ideal stoichiometric A/F ratio using 93 octane. Most OEM programs from the factory run too rich.
Running 91 octane will not hurt the engine. The ECM will pull timing (retard the spark) IF "knock" is sensed and you will loose a small amount of HP depending on how much timing is retarded. This usually will happen with the 91 octane under hard acceleration or at WOT on a very hot day (+90*) and during competition. It may do it under severe stop and go traffic on a hot day but you will not notice it.
Also, as per the factory manual:
f your vehicle has the 7.0L V8 engine (VIN Code E), use premium unleaded gasoline with a posted octane rating of 91 or higher. For best performance, use premium unleaded gasoline with a posted octane rating of 93.
GTR requires 93. i pumped one up with 94 husky(yes, husky sucks, its what gas cards we have)
For maximum performance, yes... 93 is probably required. But otherwise, it's the same for the GTR as it is for the Z06. 91 works without causing any issues, but the higher you can get, the better performance you'll get.
Rich Sandor
06-16-2009, 03:51 PM
pretty much all *newer* cars that require 93 octane CAN RUN on 87 with auto-retarding timing.
The important thing to remember here is it will only retard the timing IF the knock sensor senses knock. You could have detonation causing excessive strain within the engine before the knock sensor is tripped.

I had multiple problems with my R32 GTR before with gas from chevron being 94, I would go petro can and to my surprise I would have no hesitation problems with their 94.
This problem also occured my STI i drive when it was winter, the map I run on it is tuned for 93 or higher, I was geting lots of hesitation at low rpms filling up with chevron 94, with petro though I had the same issue or it was a little less you could say. I did some research and know winter gases can be bad, but then again if you cheap out on the gasoline grade you cheap out.
Anyways all I am saying is 94+booster is the only way I fill up now, I dont trust most gas stations anymore, especially since these gas prices are ridiculous and they will do anything to make more of a profit. Plus it only costs me 20 extra bucks a month if I fill up four times during that month.

Chevron 94 = Petrocan 94. Perhaps the station you had filled up had a leaky tank or you managed to get the dregs.
Manic!

i use 94 with octane booster....i dont trust the sale of so called "94 octane", to many times in winter has the 94 octane not been 94 octane at all :(, cheaping out on the expensive stuff to make more profit!
How did you test the octane in the gas???

I'm gonna have to call you out.
What gas stations are you talking about and how did you test the fuel to determine it wasn't 94 octane?
Busted. :D

Do us a favor and read more, post less.
owned! well said. i need 94 as well...

Any idiot can own a gas station.
LOL :haha:
Husky gas contains 10% Ethanol that's what makes their gas different. Some call it E10 gas. To help reduce carbon monoxide emissions. California pass the law and all the gas stations required to sell E10 only.
Husky's lowest octane is 90 selling at the same price as other gas stations 87 octane. They have 90 and 94 and that's it.
Some claims E10 burns a little faster hence lower mpg from E10 gas. But it's compensated with higher octane #....
Just sharing what I know...

E10 does burn faster because of the ethanol content. Ethanol itself is what gives Husky's gas a higher octane rating, but it's offset by the MPG rating.

yes, but it's merely 10%. At the end, whole tank of gas with 10% ethanol that burns faster should be hard to notice.
I got this calculation from a fellow in RX8 forum.
Ethanol has about 70% the energy content of gas maybe a little less. So at a 10% concentration you will get about 97% the energy content of pure gas. This means about 3% less fuel mileage.
If you normally got 200 miles per tank fuel with pure gas you would drop to about 196 miles with 10% ethanol.
Oh, btw, Husky and Mohawk is giving out $2.00 off 25 liters of gas. So, it's like $2 off $28 or so (8 cents off each liter).
Coupon is re-usable. So if you are closed to Husky, it might save you a little. But i you don't like them, just ignore it.
Don't get confused with the picture of the Husky MasterCard. You don't need to apply for anything.
