| Co-op/Social Housing is a SCAM
So I went to go buy something today from someone off craigslist, and the person tells me to come to their place which is marina side. I'm like no big deal, I get there and there is a big sign on the building that says, "Roundhouse Co-Operative housing".
I'm like ok, no big deal. Until I actually go into their apartment, and the guy has brand new furniture, a large lcd tv, and an amazing view.
I asked him how much his rent was and he told me 400 a month.
I'm in awe, because 9 years ago after my mother passed away we were on the brink of bankcruptcy and my dad fled the country, they put us on a ~3 year waitlist, for social housing anywhere in the GVRD. And there were people pulling out of the parking garage with brand new bimmers and shit.
What the fuck's going on? How are these fuck's scamming the system? I want to know.

Most likely, everything is bought with credit. That guy's LCD will be super obsolete by the time he pays it off.

Subsidized social housing is such a scam, I know some chick that makes a decent salary but since shes a single mother, she gets to live in nice 2 bedroom condo in Yaletown right along the seawall for $500 a month, even tho she only has the child 3 times a week. Her neighbor who is also in a subsidized condo drives an Aston Martin, figure that one out.

I know a couple of people who lives in social housing, the one near the Granville bridge. And let me tell you, they are not poor at all. They probably got the social housing because of their past income, but now that they got themselves back up, they are just don't want to leave.

The problem with Canada is that everything is incredibly inefficient - to a large extent I blame the power that unions have yielded.
The fact that lots of simple jobs command high salaries due to wage bartering has resulted in a system where people who are lucky enough to get hired are set for life.
The other HUGE problem, is that pay in the government sector (and indeed many other large organizations) is tied into your years of service - the longer you work the more safe you are from lay-offs and the higher your pay becomes. This logic is incredibly flawed - nobody cares how much performance you have achieved, and you no longer have the incentive to think of ways to improve your job, or performance, or out-perform your co-workers in the department.

If you're a just a clerk, working in the government is a pretty sweet deal. However, if you're a professional (an engineer, an economist, an advisor, etc.), the pay in the public sector is roughly the same, or possibly lower than what it would be in the private sector. In the public sector, you get no bonuses, no right to negotiate your salary, and very few perks. If the grass was really greener in the public sector, why haven't you joined?

Public sector is generally lower pay and less perks, and correct you can't negotiate your salary. BUT there's more job security, and generally better benefit plans.
A few of the electricians in our company quit to work in the public sector, they took substantial pay cuts but said that the cuts in the amount of stress levels in their new jobs more than made up for it.

The tradeoff was the reason I decided to try the public service. I've been here over 3 years and I'm still going strong.
There have been times when I thought about trying my luck in the private sector because of the perks, the possible salaries, and so on. It's just that I get annoyed with people who rant against the public service when nothing is preventing them from trying their luck. A career in the public service is definitely not for everyone and I have nothing against people who work their tails off in the private sector for more money, status, etc.
