VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - A sailboat moored near the swimming area first grabbed the attention of the Vancouver Park Board for being too close to Jericho beach. Now, it is angering many for something completely different.

Nazi symbols, including at least one swastika, are painted on the outside of the green boat. Park Board Commissioner Ian Robertson is among those offended by it. "I will be doing everything I can to get staff to move on this quickly. As I mentioned, this is the single most disgraceful symbol in the history of mankind. The fact that this individual is flaunting it to the public is despicable and just furthers my call for this boat to be removed in this area."

The boat is within a 300 metre perimeter set up for swimming and is believed to be dumping sewage into the area.

VANCOUVER - A week ago Vancouver Park Board commissioner Ian Robertson went public with his complaints that five sailboats, permanently moored off Jericho Beach, posed a health and safety threat to swimmers using the beach.

His ire - broadcast on radio and TV - was particularly directed at a green, dismasted sailboat that he said was the cause of sewage being discharged into the waters within 300 metres of the shore. Robertson said something ought to be done to have the boats removed.

Over the weekend the boat’s owner responded by painting a swastika on the side of his vessel, said Robertson.

“Showing his displeasure and drawing attention to himself by painting a swastika on the side of his boat is despicable. It’s disgraceful and shows just what a jerk this guy is,” said Robertson.

“I’ve asked staff to find out if there’s anything we can do to deal with the boat and that offensive symbol,” said Robertson.

He believes the boat was towed to its moorage from False Creek where it was one of the vessels evicted last year when the city had False Creek declared a permit-only moorage zone. The city made the declaration after a ramshackle collection of vessels had taken up permanent moorage interfering with ferry and boat access.

“It doesn’t have a working engine. And there’s an individual who lives on it. We believe there are people living on the other boats, too,” he said.

However, the False Creek exclusion zone doesn’t stretch as far as Jericho, said Robertson, and he has been unable to find a way to have the five sailboats removed.

“They are within the 300-metre water lot zone controlled by the parks board but apparently there’s nothing we can do to force them to leave. If someone puts up a tent in a park we can prevent it so I don’t know why we can’t do the same on our water lot. But I’ve been told there is nothing we can do,” said Robertson.

He said the law should be changed to prohibit vessels from causing pollution near a public beach.

“It’s not just the health issue that’s a concern. Lifeguards say people swim out past the boats and can’t be seen from shore - which is unsafe,” he said.

Robertson said he’s not sure what can be done about the swastika or the boats.

“I’m talking to senior staff to see if we can come up with a solution,” he said.

some people have missed the point and are defending the misuse of the swastika.

five boats are moored in false creek and are dumping shit into the water.
none of them have swastikas on them.
robertson makes a fuss about them, especially about the crappiest boat, the green one.
the boat's owner/operator gets offended and draws a swastika on the side of the boat in protest.

that last part shows that he's referencing the nazi swastika when he drew that swastika to protest against robertson's complaints against the boat. it's not like he's referencing the swastika as a religious symbol here.
and when you reference the nazi swastika, it's (imho) ethically wrong however much you think robertson and his ilk are nazis.

and, for example, when you couple that with some context (say the same swastika graffiti but this time on the side of a synagogue), then it becomes a hate crime.

furthermore, just because the swastika is a religious symbol as well, those who choose to display the swastika as a religious symbol should be cognizant to the fact that for most of the general population, the swastika is a symbol of the nazi regime and of hatred.
