: Korean War back on?

El Bastardo
05-28-2009, 02:38 AM
North Korea said Wednesday it was abandoning the truce that ended the Korean war and warned it could launch a military attack on the South, two days after testing an atomic bomb for the second time.

...

It said its military would "no longer be bound" by the 1953 armistice that ended hostilities in the Korean war -- in which the United States fought with the South -- because Washington had drawn its "puppet" Seoul into the PSI.
With no binding ceasefire, it said, "the Korean peninsula will go back to a state of war."
It also said the North "will not guarantee the legal status" of five South Korean islands near the disputed inter-Korean border in the Yellow Sea, which was the scene of bloody naval clashes in 1999 and 2002.

...

Analysts say Kim Jong-Il, 67, is likely carrying out shows of strength to reassert his control in the impoverished state. He reportedly had a stroke in August, which has renewed questions about who might succeed him.

...

Meanwhile, South Korean reports said that steam was seen coming from a plant at the North's main nuclear facility at Yongbyon -- a sign it was trying to produce more plutonium."

War... war is good for business. War is a great way to power through a recession.

getting worried about this. i don't follow that region's politics that well but would military action against north korea be prudent now before they start stockpiling nuclear arms? or will every communist regime on this planet come to their defense and then the next thing we'll have is WW3/Armageddon?

(sorry watched too much terminator salvation)

every older person that can relate to the 1900's on this planet has lived through a major war, i don't see why this pattern wouldn't continue.

WWI
WWII
Korea
Vietnam

that's it right?

by major war I mean traditional front line vs front line war, not vs terrorists. and also death rates were in the 100 000+ on both sides.

The North had the Russians and China backing them in the 50's, they would've lost if it weren't for them. Doubt they will do the same this time around, so why would the North invade again?

north korea is not invading nobody. the official statement is that they are using it for defence against japan and united states

They have one chance to send one nuke somewhere in the world, probably s.korea. Then they'll be wiped off the face off the map the very next second. I fear for s.korea and possibly Japan.

Yep, that's all they have to do now. Fly over and drop a bomb. South Korea may not have the guts to shoot it down quick enough

North Korea is just posturing. They have no allies to rely on, sucks to be them.

Uh no. Russia and China have N.Korea's back. If US did start shit with N.Korea even if N.Korea attacked S.Korea we would most likely see WW3 occur.

Sorry to say but S.Korea is in between a rock and hard place here.

Russia and China don't have N.Korea's back, they are part of the United Nations Embargo on allowing ships leave in and out of N.Korean waters without being searched. Read the news!!!

I don't believe Russia or China has NK's back. Both Russia and China are quite pissed that NK is STILL testing nukes. China would hate to have a huge dumpage of NK refugee-gee-gee's cross Chinese borders if a war does happen.

Can't wait to see what sort of International sanctions will be implemented as a result of NK's stupidity. I highly doubt a war will breakout, but who knows...

LOL

Russia and China backing N. Korea? You've got to be joking. Those countries are playing the diplomacy card, trying not to piss off anyone (their own political hardliners or the free market capitalists). If, for some weird reason, N.Korea decides to rearm and invade, they'll find themselves all alone.

The world of today revolves around the dollar sign and corporations and believe it or not, China and Russia have trade relations to maintain with the West.

China will backup North Korea in a war not because they're buddies, but because it's in China's best interest to do so. They want to keep the status quo.

The last thing they want is for North Korea to collapse, have a flood of refugees and more importantly, the US at their door step, NK is a good buffer for China and that's why they've been propping them up. I'm not saying that they consider North Korea an ally, in fact the people probably most pissed off at Kim Jong Il currently is probably the Chinese. They're more a liability than anything, China's the big guy at the bar and North Korea is China's scrawny mouthy buddy trying to pick fights.

Russia could care less, but I have a hard time believing China would do anything that would seriously compromise North Korea, I know they're a part of the blockades but they'll still be secretly shipping aid over.

My prediction is that before NK can do anything that would actually start an armed conflict, China would strong-arm them into being obedient like shutting off power, oil, money, etc.

yup. last thing china wants is the disappearance of NK and having the US army as their next door neighbour. 2 doors down is something they've accepted. but patio buddies? nuh-uh.

Hrdliners want status-quo. Just wait a few generations when these money hungry chinese kids rise to the top, they'd want a US friendly trading partner. Imagine NK industrializing and having all that labour to exploit.

260 km range now.

I don't think they can put a nuke on one of them yet.

China and Russia are not going to come to NK's aid for this one. They will probably stop the US from staying there if they invade. Why do the dirty work yourself when the US can do it for you?

RacePace

If the North does invade and the South wins, it could actually be a good thing for the people in North Korea, to actually have a government that cares about them. (assuming nothing nuclear went off)

They flee to China because its the best route to get out of North Korea.. They usually cross the river go through China down to Laos and then cross in to Thailand then the South Korean government picks them up there. China has an agreement with North Korea to send back all refugees and Laos shoot to kill at the border. Only Thailand has some accordence with South Korea to allow them to come pick up the refugees but you never really see it, its all done hush hush. Its also why you see a lot of North Koreans in around Thailand. LOL

Think about going through the DMZ ... thats a lot of land to go through plus theres wild animals, mines, guards, etc .... Plus North Korea dosn't allow anyone to live near the DMZ only military personal and that stupid village at the border

Theres actually a documentary following a family of refugees from China to Thailand. Forget what it was called. Poor people

NK will start with the annexation of Goseong's pool

Then they'll redesign their nations flag similar to this

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/eb/FGEPeterbusUnum.png

It will all end when NK realizes they ran out of kimchi and can't feed their starving armies
