Germany has agreed a deal with Magna International, a Canadian car parts maker, to take over Opel, the European wing of US carmaker GM, reports say.
Talks in Berlin continued into early Saturday before Germany's finance minister announced a deal...

Honestly, this is about the most exciting news I have heard in a long time. A true, Canadian auto maker.
The dream plan for Magna : buy Saturn, consolidate vehicle lineups with Opel (beyond the Astra and Sky), use existing manufacturing capacity within Opel/Saturn/Magna to continue building cars. Use excess capacity as cash-flow (liquidate) or for R&D. Man this makes soooo much sense on so many levels. You already have the brand identity and infrastructure in Europe. Saturn could be your North American gateway. Love it.

Rebadging the GM Saturn back to Open or Vauxhall might freshen up their image in North America. Bring in some Opel Insignia!!!

Your profile says "vehicle: Honda" , and good on you for supporting domestic products!

Saturn actually has good cars. It's just too bad that people make comments such as yours that perpetuate the myth that "ZOMG domestics are bad cars!"

Canadian autoparts manufacturer Magna, chosen by Berlin to take over automaker Opel, said Saturday it wants to build cars by the German company in Canada.
"We want to build Opel cars in Canada," Magna chairman Frank Stronach told The Globe and Mail, without however providing details of where the vehicles could be assembled.

the only Canadian car maker I know is Bricklen.
and no, you can't really call Opel a Canadian automaker.
that's like saying Jaguar and Land Rover are Indian cars.

They should do something about the brand image. Seriously, call me ignorant, but I'd love to get an Opel, but not a Saturn.

Aaah, image whores. Why the hell does it matter what badge is on the front of your car? A good car is a good car, regardless of who makes it.

If a car company was Canadian owned, had its parts made in Canada, and was then assembled in Canada... you'd be very hard pressed to not call it Canadian.

reminds me of an episode in initial d when they stated that the nissan gtr was a domestic...
a good car maybe a good car but again the perception is what counts in a lot of people...same thing as why people buy brand items rather than no name...

Not really. Ur car is an extension of urself, just like ur clothes. Why do u buy expensive clothes when cheap Old Navy clothes will last you just as long?

That's a bit different. Saying you'd by a car if it simply had a different badge on it isn't the same. Why would someone not buy a car they like because of the logo on the front? I don't hold off on buying clothing simply because of who made it, regardless of the price. Good clothing is good clothing, just like a good car is a good car. Who cares who makes it?

damn.
was reading the vancouver sun today about this magna deal. something in the sale agreement states that opel will not be sold in north america or in china. i did not state why, but magna commented that that could change in the future.
and there are no plans to take over saab or saturn either. the focus is on opel at the moment, but if things work out, it's a possibility.
the article also mentioned that hummer has caught the interest of a lage chinese heavy machinery manufacturer. again no details.

It's only one of the largest Canadian companies... Magna is a huge auto parts manufacturer.

Agreed.
We are living in interesting times. Every day brings more changes. I'm interested to see what Magna can do with Opel.
