Hi there

Im planning to purchase a 00 Porsche Carrera 2, I believe it is the 996. Are there any problems anyone knows of? The car has 92xxxkm on it and has an aftermarket supercharger

porsche 911s hold value very well

it's not like gm, ford or chrysler

You will have a hard time selling it afterward.
It got 02 facelift conversion which you might need to make sure it doesn't have a front end collision.
I rather take a stock 996 instead of this one.

Apart from the car itself, have you researched on where you're going to get the car serviced? Where you're going to buy parts?

Porsches have always been quite reliable (in terms of a true sports car) but with the aftermarket supercharger you better cross your fingers that nothing major will go wrong.

Good luck!

ed, hope u get it! that thing is gonna be fast!
but for the price it is.. a bit expensive.. considering the year n mileage, even though it has an S/C in it, but there are better options out there!

not 996, those things are worthless

42k for a 00 3.4L C2 is a ripoff.... i seen much lower milege facelifted 04 C2 with the 3.6L for less then that.

just spend more and get a 997.1.... 997.1 C2S is around 65k nowadays

yup don't get the 3.4, the facelifted ones look a lot better,

oh wait this guy converted it. (possible accident?)
I dunno if a supercharger would be particularly reliable.
Neways I'm not too fond of 911 cabs always been coupe for me.

and 92k is pretty high for a porsche,
I suggest keep looking, maybe even go for a newer boxster.
Although a 911 is still a 911 no matter what.

What's a "european suspension" I didn't even know there was a difference.
Don't most guys go for PSS or something if they're going to change it?

997s are actually a much nicer car, so if u can find one in the low-mid 50s take that instead. or save up for one. I've seen C4S coupes going for this price. so definitely keep looking for a better deal.
Unless those mods are your thing don't go for this one.

Ed, we should talk. I've been looking at 996's pretty seriously and I've done a lot of research too. Not to mention I'm in the club and spend a lot of time talking to guys with 996's and they've told me what to look out for. In fact today I spent the whole day autocrossing two different 2002 996C2's!!!

problems? rear main seal... google it. it's not pretty.

cozy up to an independent shop like weissach or scan automotive (there are others) and ask politely! i'm sure they will have plenty to say if you present yourself as a potential customer.

any more details on this supercharger conversion? sounds interesting.

i know it has BC plates but the scenery in the pics dosen't look like BC...

A stock one isn't be a bad daily either, If you ignore the complete lack of interior styling 993s are a perfect 10. They sell for more than equivalent 996s and it'll be that way for the rest of eternity, just because they are that much more raw and amazing. But it's got a much more casual look to it than previous 911, and looks way better than 964.

993s never have unsatisfied drivers,

my cousin bought one in the states 06 carrera turbo for 35g's with 15000 miles on it, clean car, no accidents and shizzle. A 06 down there is at least 70-80g's

i've talked to a quite a few 993 owners that i bumped into at weissach.. and they all love their 993's. light mods and still plenty quick for a reliable daily driver.

993 C4S in arctic white is beautiful...

993 would hold its value the best: its the perfected air cooled 911 and would hold its value really really well (hell, you might even sell it for more than you bought it for)

Amazing interior detail! Lol since thats Marco's favorite response to most things performance related, how about you post some of these amazing interior details to WOW us with how amazing and justified porsche interiors are since they make the most profit per car sold of *ANY* manufacturer bar none.

Keep in mind this is what your paying for
Porsche earns an average profit of $28,000 per vehicle sold. What this means is that with each Carrera that rolls off the lot, they have enough money to buy a couple of Pontiacs of their own.

That $28,000 figure “dwarfs the per-car earnings of virtually any other automaker.” By comparison, BMW makes about $3,200 per car, whereas Audi gets about $1,580. When you start looking at higher volume vehicles, the figure drops even further, with Chrysler only making $900 and VW netting $400.

Just a comment on the Exige. One of my friends in Vancouver bought a Elise two years ago. Its really annoying after the first two weeks. Everything about that car is focused on performance, so even rainy days were annoying as the rain drops seemed that much louder, not to mention exterior noise, the cramped space, the flimsiness of the doors - in short it feels like a toy.
Given the stop-and-go traffic in Vancouver rain, it definitely isn't a daily driver.

But only newer boxster S have the 3.4
the 986 never had the 3.4 so It probably wasn't the same 3.4 used in the 996
because the boxster didn't get it till 07 and the 996 got rid of it in 02,

So I don't think that in the 5 years between they didn't change the engine so I don't think what thumper says about boxster and 996 sharing the same engine is true, although it might be the same problem.

Having driven both an '02 s2k and '02 996's, in anger, I'd take the 996, hands down. It's better in every possible way.

I wouldn't call the S2K legendary.. it's no more or less special than a 996.

I guess from the 1980s till now I like to skip a gen with 911s, 964 and 996 weren't my faves. I still like them but not as much.

As a 993 guy I'll never forgive the 996 for introducing 911 to mainland C-lai's driving them around in Vancouver. It just doesn't feel as special anymore. but at least it's no cayenne XD

Based on that i'm pretty irrational for liking the 997 though,
I don't sound very convincing I guess...

but S2K and NSX are pretty legendary honda sports cars.
But maybe I agree with you that the 996 is way better, more practical and it's a porsche.

^HEY DON'T QUESTION VINCE FROM SHAMWOW!!!

Even if it is "over-engineered" I'd take a 911 or and R8 over any "supercar" the japanese will throw at me. Sports cars like 911s don't have to be simple, they're meant to showcase the technology and the best engineered cars of the time. You show me a Japanese ass engined car that can still deliver the refinement, practicality, fuel economy, and elegance that a 911 has. You pay that extra for something that is that much sweeter, and that much more desirable.

Theres nothing wrong with being complicated because for many that's what makes the car more enjoyable. Sorta like the R35 GTR, over-complicated, but heck you show me a 4000lb awd house on wheels that moves that fast around the nurburgring. That's the only thing that keeps the GTR desirable neways, it's definitely it's stunning good looks

No it's not just a stereotype. If you worked on cars, Japanese or German, you'll know but obviously, you don't.

I'm completely with you, I know I don't own a P-car but I own a VW and lately it's been giving me a headache. Sometimes I go, why the fuck would they do this.....so many wtf moments...

Sure some 996 911s have depreciated to the range that ppl think they can afford buying a Porsche. But that doesn't mean they can afford to MAINTAIN a Porsche. So if you can't afford a $60K car, you can't afford a $40K Porsche.

i waited a week and a half for a tensioner to come in from germany.... T_T

and im not the only one in the house who suffers from german cars.

dad's e-class 4matic's cat broke in the inside.... took 5 days for parts to arrive too. (well, that's actually the only problem we had with it so far)

german car parts > us. but i think those early vws are ok.. since parts are everywhere..?

What parts are you waiting for?

What parts are you waiting for?

front suspension subframe (stretch bolts holding it together have.... issues), air con condenser (they are guessing because they have tried everything else and can't find the problem), hood liner (falling down). a few weeks back the steering ecu developed amnesia making for non-assisted steering (great upper body workout when fighting both a mechanical rack and a dead electromechanical power steering motor) as well.

so far i've been to the dealer 3 times in 2 months. and fortunately everything so far has been covered under warranty and the service dept. has been really good to me... but i have no extended (was offered before purchase but i didn't have the cash), and i'm worried that this could become my worst nightmare when the factory warranty expires. my last car (japanese) was nearly 10 years old and had nearly 200k kms when i had to sell it, and i've only been to the dealer once in the 5 years that i had owned it.

one of my now ex-friends was mocking me yesterday saying i bought a new car so that i could drive a service loaner almost all the time... not fair!

sigh...

^I think you can still buy extended before the factory expires
Is this for a GTI? Damn sounds like a lemon to me

Sucks to hear you bro. I know how you feel haha. They're fun things to drive but when there's a problem it's not fun. Hope there's good news soon. Tough it out!

don't say that!!! you'll jinx me

the subframe and compressor are known problems and there are TSBs out for them... it's just unfortunate for me that they both happened simultaneously. no explanation for the steering ecu and hood liner though
