Does anyone have someone to recommend or a store?
thanks
Have you thought about laminate flooring? It is much more cheaper not only in price but for installation and to maintain.

Tile would be even cheaper me thinks! I have wooden floors upstairs and tile (stone) floors downstairs and I prefer the tile (and its a lot cheaper too).

+1.
My parents have real maple hardwood in the family room and it cost around $5000.

Tile floor is not cheap, actually tile is cheap but installation cost a bunch
I am not in Vancouver but I work in this industy..
you are probably looking around these costs for materials only..
Hardwood = $4-7/sqft
Laminate = $1-4/sqft
Ceramic Tile = $1-$3/sqft
Porcelain Tile = $3-$8/sqft
With installation:
Hardwood = $6-$11
Laminate = $3.5-$7
Ceramic = $4-9
Porcelain = $8-10
Laminate is cheap and practical, but many people think they are too "cheap" (in terms of image) to put in a house...i'd also look away from cheap laminate made in China, never know what kind of chemical they use in there...
DIY is great if you want to save money are have the time to do it.

Some of the new laminate is totally kickass. Very hard to scratch and looks identical to real wood.

you dont want contractor grade hardwood. It is normally the lowest grade hardwood you can get. As for the bamboo floor. it is fairly hard hardwood compare to like birch or even maple. it is not soft at all. But the good thing about bamboo its envirnmental friendly since they grow so fast just like weed. Not only do they look great but they are slightly cheaper compare to other hardwood floor.
If you cheap out and getting 0.99 dollars laminate or 2.50 hardwood floor prepare to get unexpected problem in the future.
The material for the hardwood/laminate varies a lot. Because there are too many wood species to choose from. And there are too many different styles of laminate floor as well.
For the labour wise you are looking at $4/SF hardwood or $3.75/SF laminate. Thats the rate for basic install. It means no removal of old existing floor, no baseboard installed.
Tiles are cheap but the labour to get it done is expensive. You are looking at $7/SF for the tile installation. The above quoted price is just for labor all alone.

DIY is great but once you realized you screwed up the job and ended up paying twice the money to get the same job done is priceless.

Milano Flooring in Richmond (across from IKEA). Contrary to the name, it's a Chinese shop. They sell mainly solid + engineered hardwood.
BC Hardwood Floor Co. is a very good place to see a wide range of selection and get a lot of info. They are unfortunately quite expensive both in terms of material and labour.
Bamboo is pretty cool if you don't mind the limited style + selections - vertical or horizontal grain, normal or toasted. Still, very nice, somewhat Asian-esque and it's affordable plus supposedly good for the environment.
I like laminate for affordability and it looks great, but you can really feel the difference if you're the type to walk barefoot around the house. Solid or engineered wood has a different sort of give compared to laminate which tends to be really hard and has a slippery finish. At least, the ones I've walked on. Maybe the sub floor material was different, or it was due to the difference between floating or glue + nail installations.
Cork is an interesting alternative. It's actually very soft, but very comfortable to walk on and resistant to a lot of movement. Cheap, too.
+1 for Elegant flooring; ask for Peter.
