Man, I couldn't even imagine what a G.I. must've thought knowing what waited for him on the shore. Much respect.

I was just about to make a post about it too, WW2 is the last righteous war to take place.

may God rest their souls

oh and yea, anybody else annoyed at all the commercials History channel managed to squeeze into Saving Private Ryan......hard to get into the mood of the movie with non stop commercials, The movie ran from 9pm to 1am, and it's 170 mins long only, so adds up to over an hour of commercials combined, they put 3 commercials alone in the last 15 mins alone

These men were truly of a different breed. We owe every single thing we enjoy today to the fine men who stood for what our country is now.

All Due Respect.

Not anything like in Saving Private Ryan.

I was at Omaha beach last year, in the movie the beachhead is about 100 feet away from the shore. In real life its about a mile.

Hollywood for you.

EDIT: Here's a picture of Omaha beach (the beach the Americans took) that I took last year. As you can see there's a great distance between sand and ledge up top. Not taking anything away from the soldiers that risked their lives that day in Normandy, but Saving Private Ryan was complete bullshit.

When I got to Omaha beach my first instinct was you have got to be fucking kidding me. Thanks Tom Hanks

There was an interesting show on before Saving Private Ryan too. They discussed all the cock ups that happened during the Normandy invasion. US bombers were to have pummeled the beach line before the raid took place with 'precision bombing' on the turret emplacements. Not only did they miss the guns, for the most part, they missed the beaches altogether. This meant that allied infantry were up against the Jerry guns at full strength, as opposed to a weakened state from bombing. This was just one of many major failures along the way. Amazing feat they all pulled off there.

so what are you trying to say? if anything the added distance made the stretch up to the ledge even more trecherous, not to mention who's to say what the water level was like 60 years ago?

a .50 cal machine gun could still hit the water line from the hill..

Confused????

Was the second world war about saving Canada? I thought it was about liberating Europe from under Jerry Jackboots? Maybe ending the systematic eradication of Jews? Restoring democracy? Fuck, I got it all wrong

Good post, certainly a defining moment in World War II. Can't imagine what the world would be like if the other side had won.

On a side note, let me try to play the UN here with the whole movies issue..

Hollywood movies based on historical facts have rarely been completely accurate. These movies need to make money at the box office hence they need engage viewers with something more than a strict time line of what happened. There's movies like Schindler's List that portray events quite accurately, while crappier historical movies such as Pearl Harbor take events and add drama at the expense accuracy to try to get more viewers. In the end, both the good and bad movies raise awareness of what has happened in the past and usually stir up interest.
