Racist slurs were shouted as a group of teenagers attacked and robbed a group of people playing tennis Friday night in Aldergrove.

Six Abbotsford residents, all of South Asian, were playing tennis near 272nd Street and 32nd Avenue at about 7:45 p.m., said Langley RCMP Cpl. Holly Marks.

Four Caucasian suspects, three young men and a woman, approached and began shouting racially based expletives.

The suspects then pulled boards off a nearby fence, and one found a metal bar. They forced their way into the courts, despite the players attempts to bar the gate, and then herded the players into one corner.

One of the suspects threw a board and hit one player in the head.

The suspects then stole the players personal belongings and fled the scene.

Several residents and people passing by reported the incident to police, and gave information on which way the suspects were headed. Police found two of the men and a woman a short time later in a residential neighbourhood; a third man was found on Fraser Highway.

The group includes an 18-year-old woman, a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old, all from Langley, and a 19-year-old Surrey man.

All four have either been charged or are facing charges of robbery, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, and uttering threats. An additional count of uttering threats to a peace officer was laid against the 15-year-old boy, and the 19-year-old has been charged with breach.

More charges may be laid, Marks said.

Thanks to the help of the public, most of the stolen items have been recovered.

Four teens were arrested, thanks to residents who phoned police while the attack was in progress.

“The fact that there is a nuance of hate . . . and hate was a core element is very disturbing,” Insp. Amrik Virk of Langley RCMP said Monday.

“This should not happen in our society.”

The Indo-Canadian men, who are in their 20s, were playing tennis at Jackman Park on 32nd Avenue near 272nd Street in Aldergrove just after 7:30 p.m. Friday, when three young men and a woman approached them, shouting racial slurs and telling them to go back to where they came from.

“It was unprovoked,” said Vic Spooner, whose backyard overlooks the tennis court.

“They were just playing tennis, when these four clowns just came down to the park, one of them a little slip of a girl, and they began yelling.”

Darlene Griscowski said her husband Brian was in the backyard watering their lawn when one of the attackers began kicking down their fence right in front of him.

The teens then headed back to the tennis court, wielding the fenceboards and a metal bar as weapons.

“It was quite terrifying,” said Griscowski. “It was really, really ugly.”

The tennis players barricaded themselves inside the court, but the attackers forced their way in and cornered them.

One of the suspects then hurled the fenceboard at the group, hitting one of the men in the head.

Witnesses said the Abbotsford men were well built, and commended them for not fighting back.

“They were big guys, they outnumbered them, but they didn’t retaliate at all,” said Griscowski.

The suspects then stole the men’s belongings — bags and cellphones — before fleeing up the lane into a residential neighbourhood.

Langley RCMP received a number of 911 calls from concerned residents, who pointed them in the suspects’ direction of travel.

Two male teens and one young woman were arrested nearby, to the applause of residents who had gathered to watch the commotion.

Another male was arrested about an hour later on Fraser Highway.

Three of those arrested — two boys aged 15 and 16, and an 18-year-old woman — are from Langley. The fourth suspect is a 19-year-old Surrey man.

They face charges of assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, robbery and uttering threats.

Langley Township Mayor Rick Green was shocked by the attack.

“I was devastated,” said Green.

“I’ve lived here for 12 years and there’s no history of this whatsoever that I know of.”

METRO VANCOUVER - Charges had been laid against four people who allegedly shouted racist slurs as they attacked and robbed a group of people playing tennis Friday night in Aldergrove.

The attack began when a group of four teenagers approached six players at the Jackman Park tennis courts. The youths allegedly used a metal bar and boards ripped off a fence to menace the six victims, all the while shouting racial slurs. The players were herded into a corner of the court, and one was hit on the head by a thrown board. Their personal belongings were taken by the teenagers.

The B.C. Hate Crime Team is helping the Langley RCMP with the investigation, said RCMP Cpl. Holly Marks.

Numerous witnesses called the police during the assault, and four suspects were arrested within an hour.

Rodney Mercieca, a 19-year-old Surrey man, and Lesley Rothwell, an 18-year-old Langley woman, have both been charged with four counts of robbery, one count of uttering threats, six counts of assault with a weapon, and one count of assault causing bodily harm.

Mercieca has also been charged with breaching his probation. He had been bound by a probation order on June 4, the day before the attack, said Marks. Mercieca will now remain in custody until June 12 when he will be back before a Surrey Provincial Court judge for a bail hearing.

Rothwell has been released on several conditions, including no contact orders with the victims or her co-accused.

The other two accused are minors, both Langley boys, aged 15 and 16.

The 15-year-old has been charged with two counts of robbery, breach of recognizance, uttering threats and assault with a weapon. He will remain in custody to appear in Surrey Youth Court on June 17.

The 16-year-old is charged with two counts of robbery and one count of assault with a weapon. He has been released to appear in court on the 17th, and will be under a curfew and no-contact orders.

The investigation is still ongoing, Marks said.

My closest friends who are siblings to each other used to be the roughest Nammers I knew back in the late 90's. Now, they are married, work in the game industry and just recently became owners of a townhouse. But back then? You stared them down and it was a bash fest.

What's slowly happening is parts of the GVRD are turning into ghettos. East Hastings is slowly been redeveloped and I wouldn't be surprised if most of the area is cleaned up in the next few years. Most of the trouble areas in Surrey and Langley have sprung up over the last 10 years after the huge influx of immigration and the high cost of living in Vancouver. Mix in our massive drug problems and most of these low income areas have become breeding grounds for uneducated youth who only see crime as a way out. I say give it 5-10 more years and we will see real ghettos which you see in the US and now in parts of Europe.
