After Ip Man, Red Cliff 2 kind of time frame has been hella slow with releases. Sniper was ok in terms of action. Go to lovehkfilm.com for reviews and stuff. It's kind of a chinese version of imdb

Another Chinese New Year film called I Love Hong Kong. Nothing special but the trippy thing is everyone in it is a star. When I say star I mean everyone in the movie from the main characters to the random "ke le fe" is somebody you will recognize given you've watched chinese movies/shows since you were a kid till now.

Yup, I have watched Monga before. It is a really good movie imo.. one of the best movies I watched last year actually. The movie's story line is quite good, and some parts of the movie was quite emotional. I would highly recommend this movie.

If you like action movies and Donnie Yen. Bodyguards and Assassins was okay, although the storyline was just so-so. Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen was good; it's based on Bruce Lee's character in the movie Fist of Fury (there was also a TVB series based on the same name which starred Donnie Yen as well).

taiwanese cop drama, acting is 10x better than tvb
Kinda like tvb's EU but way more intense
"Pi Zi and Ying Xiong are two cops who are as different as day and night. One does nothing except for drinking coffee and living a luxurious lifestyle while waiting for information from dubious sources to crack his cases. Another believes law and justice are the pillars of society and is constantly on the street catching criminals a little overzealously for his superiors liking. When a case brought these two top crime solvers together, sparks flied and a little light peeked into this dark city where the nation's President is on friendly terms with the local triad and twins kill people while drinking milkshake."

These are all great movies and really a must watch for 2010 / 2011
The first one is not action and more of a drama/acting type films. The other ones are action based. Shaolin is the only one that I think is in Mandarin (but there might be Cantonese version).
Merry Go Round
東風破
Check out the youtube video so you get the jist of what it's about. Music, story and acting is pretty decent.

Shaolin 2011 新少林寺
Andy Lau, Jacky Chan, Nicholas Tse.
Great acting, great action, shaolin monks... (oh, I think the movie was in Mandarin)
The Stool Pigeon 線人
Nicholas Tse and Nick Cheung
Great police thriller, voted best actor again for Nick Cheung for 2010.
Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame 狄仁傑之通天帝國
Andy Lau
Great Chinese Sherlock Holmes. Well worth the rental

Business for MAL is so dead due to ppl downloading movies these days, downloading= #1 piracy
StylinRed
04-05-2011, 02:17 AM
no most people pay $1 for 10 chinese movies in crystal mall
fan ban has always been the #1 piracy for asians
pirated movies has always been the culture for asians ever since VHS/laser disc/VCDs its always been prevalent and "legit" companies are still able to fend/prosper for themselves
blaming piracy is just what people who can't deal with the times do because they're bad at business
look at the music industry, they were able to fix their mistakes of overcharging and providing music on an unpopular medium rather well
(the gut wrench reaction for most businesses is "its not may fault, lets look for something to blame" when its they who can't move with the times)
MAL, if anything, is losing business due to alll the chinese stores around it even seemingly legit stores that sell fan ban discs + all the bad films that have been coming out of asia
and they're losing out to a medium of online access (like blockbuster losing to netflix and amazon)
not to mention the chinese movie channels that we have now that actually show new movies

for your info, $1 for 10 chinese movies do not exist. thats like 10 cents for a movie lol. They go for about $3 as of today. People nowaadays dunt even need to buy when they can go download movies, even if fan bans are dirt cheap. Ask 100 ppl out there today, 90 of them download movies instead of buying. Even alot of fan ban shops closed because of downloads. No need to argue but downloading is #1 piracy as of now.

so true, look at the posts above where ppl suggested sites for downloading lol. Its sad how ppl "say" they support the industry but dunt "support" in when it comes to buying them. This is why MAL moved to such a small place in Richmond. I know this as a fact because i know the owners of MAL. By majority of ppl, i dunt mean everyone downloads but 90% of watchers nowadays do, same goes for english movies. Thats why rogers video is going out of business.

again, i've updated my post but people who can't deal with the times will always find something to blame instead of their lack of business skills
fail all you want, but that's ultimately what's wrong
there've been studies that were even posted on RS b4 in regards to piracy and it only accounts for a very very small portion
but those who lack in business like to pretend piracy accounts for 100% of their issues
edit: a Simple perusal of MALs website would even tell you why they're going out of business... they're charging $43 for a blu-ray movie.. not even a chinese movie for TRON!!
Hell I can go to YesAsia for better prices or even Amazon.com for comparable asian content (and YESASIA is expensive! in comparison to sites like dddhouse etc )
if you want to argue the size of companies and their buying power; there are small online companies that sell the same things for far less
MAL is in a dying industry that's been overtaken by the online world and the large brick and mortar companies and a population that wants their content for cheaper (especially in a shaky economic environment)
I take it the 3 of you are probably in your teens, so its expected that you don't quite grasp the bigger picture of what's going on and you blame what you find relevant (piracy) but in the bigger picture piracy is a very small portion of their troubles
you're also assuming everyone who downloads doesn't buy either (and this is absolutely untrue)
blee123
04-05-2011, 02:46 AM
If you still think fan bans are why MAL is going out of business, heres another thing. If u havent noticed, alot of stores that sell fan bans went out of business too due to all the downloading. The one in continental closed down, empire etc. Even MAL sells fan ban under the table now because ppl are downloading movies ( even big budget ones) since they dunt have to pay a single penny. fan ban is not a big issue why legit stores are going out of business, its downloading. I know MAL sells fan ban because i know the owner very well.

MAL has always sold fan bans i think like 10-15yrs ago or so they were even busted for it (i may be wrong and confusing it for another place though)

If you are talking about how online stores sells movies cheaper than MAL, think about this. How about you ask ppl if they are willing to pay $29 for a blue ray when they can just download it. 8/10 ppl would jus download if they are not planning on keeping the movie for future uses. How can stores stay in business when ppl are like that. Most ppl may say " i will buy it" but how many ppl actually do 'buy" it. Its just their saying that they support but arent pitching out the $ to buy it.

even if MAL sells the same movie for the same price as other online competitive stores, ppl would jus download. Trust me on this. 8/10 ppl will engage in it. Why pay when you can get it free right? Theres always a few ppl that actually support but very little as of today.

RIETI (research institute of economy, trade & industry) Japanese govt. research
has found that piracy has increased sales of anime and did not affect rentals
http://www.rieti.go.jp/en/publications/summary/11010021.html
^^^ pirating anime is likely more widely done than Chinese movies and it has actually increased sales which means people who download do buy
again to assume 80% of the world pirates movies instead of buys (and doesnt buy even after pirating) is absolutely retarded.. im sorry... i really am, im just going to end it here
edit: okay i said ill end it but just another point to add... video games consoles, Wii/Xbox have been hacked for years... yet Nintendo makes an unbelievable killing in the games market and so does Xbox; if Developers felt they were losing their money on these consoles due to downloaders they wouldn't make games for them and only make them for Playstation (which until very recently wasn't hacked and even now has barely taken off)
MAL sucks cuz they don't know how to do business and they're in a dying Format industry; plain and simple

this is why i thanked u for, its not retarded, its a fact. I have personally worked as store manager at HMV therefore i have all the experiences. Ppl come in and jot down names of movies and go home to download, even ones that are on sale for $6 lol.
StylinRed
04-05-2011, 03:15 AM
yes im well aware why you thanked me, it was quite obvious
and to bring up HMV omg.... OMG..... hmv didnt die because of pirates... god....
why would people go into hmv to write down names of movies.... instead of browse amazon or something... lol god.... (you must be confusing people who are smart shoppers, who come in to compare prices and they're writing down how much you want for them so they dont forget when they're inside Futureshop)
HMV was mainly a music store their downfall came because people wanted MP3s instead of CDs
HMV turned to movies... unfortunately they can't compete with the competition and their prices...
They still exist but have downsized because in their format medium market + competition that's all they could do
They're still breathing though
Sectors like Itunes, NetFlix, Appstores etc WOULDNT BE GROWING/Flourishing... if people would rather Download for Free than pay... (And they're not even getting a Physical item now so there's less of an advantage but still Paying2Download is growing)
That's why people were initially doubting Blu-Ray (Apple still does) because they say the world is headed to downloading their content (not for free... but for pay) because people don't want Clutter
Its the same thing the Music Industry noticed... people just wanted their Music as MP3s rather than physical CDs and that launched the billion dollar industry of MP3 players and files
here read this too the Movie industry has actually grown in the face of "piracy"
http://www.ime.edu/Portals/41606/docs/piracymovieindustry.pdf (even the mpaa only pegged piracy to take up 14% of its sales worldwide and that's through their biased analysis, a far cry from 80%)
Not from higher prices but from more people buying/watching films
by the Institute of Media and Entertainment in conjunction with the IESE Business school (top 10 business school of the world)

The HK movie industry is dead because they keep making movies without HK flavouring and it's all produced and made in China with happy China propaganda endings that suck the creativity out of the films.
Also, all these so called HK movies are filmed in Mandarin now. Sad.
