It's a Bouncing Baby Beluga Girl!

Aurora gave birth to her latest calf at 3:39 PM, on Sunday, June 7, 2009.

This newborn beluga is:
- about 1.3 metres long and weighs roughly 50 kg (at birth)
- slate grey -- it will gradually lighten as it matures
- wrinkled for the first few weeks
- adorable

Trained beluga observers are monitoring Aurora and the newborn calf around the clock to ensure that they have the best care possible.

Aurora is an experienced mom but the trainers and the veterinary staff will still be carefully watching for the first few milestones after a birth bonding and nursing.

Third-time beluga
mom Aurora and her
newborn calf formed a
strong bond a day into
their new life together,
which bodes well for the
unnamed calf.
“Aurora is doing a great
job and we continue to see
her maternal instincts
come to the fore,” said Dr.
Marty Haulena, the
aquarium’s veterinarian.
“There are several critical
milestones for the calf
to reach over the next few
days and weeks.”
The calf and mother remain
under 24-hour observation.
And while the public is
only allowed to view the
new calf from the upper
deck of the Beluga habitat,
two aquarium regulars
got up close and personal
yesterday.
At 9:22 a.m., Qila (Aurora’s
daughter) and her
own baby, one-year-old
Tiqa, were introduced to
the calf.
Aquarium officials say
the young beluga stuck
close to its mom at first,
but curiosity eventually
got the better of Tiqa.
After 10 minutes, she
swam up to the calf and
continued to swim alongside
her new playmate.
The aquarium’s other
two belugas, Imaq – the father
of both Tiqa and the
newborn calf – and
Kavna are being cared for
in a separate habitat for
the time being.

The father had sex with the mother and his (step?)daughter!
