That is their football (soccer) team. After pulling off a ridiculous entry into the semi-finals (requiring a SIX goal difference to be made up against Italy's score),
they've shown tremendous heart against top-ranked Spain in South Africa and they just might be poised to challenge Brazil (90% chance the other finalist) to pave the road for them to be an actual contender at next year's world cup. Sure, you can say South Africa have just as good of a chance at an upset but realistically they are a cut below USA, and Brazil is a cut above Spain (IMO).

I scoff at all of the predictions that Spain would totally destroy USA, scorelines of 3-0 or more; although never a real supporter of their NT I've felt over the past eight years they've been a tier 2 team at least, able to hang with the likes of Portugal and Switzerland and therefore capable of posing a threat to -any- team. Their first two games in the competition were really not in their top form at all and shouldn't have been a real indicator of their potential. What they lack in technical skill and form they make up for in heart and grit. Canada should take note...

Hopefully this monumental victory will slightly increase interest in the sport in North America. Also I just wanted to start a thread in a local forum about football (soccer) because NBA is over and I don't want to discuss the NHL in the middle of freaking June.

i think Soccer in North America has a good shot right now of breaking into the mainstream. the door is open and there is definitely some interest brewing. if they play their cards right, there just might be some serious growth in soccer in North America in the next 5 years.

the question is, in 10 years will we look back and say it really was because of the whole Beckham deal?

Perhaps.

But the irony of it all is he barely ever played and then went back to Europe. :lol

whitecaps in mls will help the local scene for certain -- a downtown stadium is definitely key. i know i'll go watch afew whitecaps games when they finally start playing in the mls.

One win in a friendly competition does not make a team awesome.

Are you implying that when a team such as Tampa Bay Lightning beat Pittsburgh Penguins 2-0 during the season, team Lightning becomes Awesome?

thats the thing. it wouldnt matter if he didnt even play 1 game. there was such a buzz about it when it was happening that it suddenly put soccer on the map.

uh.. don't forget that most of the big teams (such as Brazil) don't have their big names playing in the confederation cup.

No it didn't. All it did was put Beckham on the front page of US weekly and Peoples Magazine. That's it. Soccer will never be big here because america loves watching fat asses collide with other fat asses. People are stupid over here like you wouldn't believe and soccer is not on the map here... far from it.

Donald Trumps Rossie Rant fits perfect with soccer. I'll leave you with it and leave this thread to you soccer fans to talk about the sport.

"Soccer's very lucky to have its fans," Trump said. "And it better be careful, or I'll send another sport over to pick up it's fans. Why would they be soccer fans if they had another choice?"

no 1 likes soccer here. I think it's because North Americans have short attention spans. They can't appreciate the slow build-up of an offence. Think about it, the sports they like are NHL, NBA, Nascar, American football........nevermind

I would, if I could easily describe USA's team without actually using the word USA. Perhaps, "Bob Bradley's team", or "Landon Donovan's team"?

who the fuck cares about confederations cup

Spain fielded a strong team, so apparently they did.

Are you implying that when a team such as Tampa Bay Lightning beat Pittsburgh Penguins 2-0 during the season, team Lightning becomes Awesome?

It is a lot easier to have a random upset in club hockey than in international soccer; players get traded around like peanuts, teams are hardly the same year after year and they play so many damn games in a regular season and the playoffs anything bound to happen pretty regularly. One game, even in the confed cup, is a lot more important in soccer than one game in the regular season in hockey. And who the fuck cares about the Lightning?

Ya, all teams played their starting players in their rosters.

I hope USA doesnt beat Brazil, otherwise they are going to think they dominate soccer. Its bad enough they are ranked number 14 in the FIFA ranking.

theres a lot of countries that like soccer with hockey or basketball. the big reason why soccer is popular all around the world is because theres a lot of poor countries out there where people couldnt afford more than a ball to play with. in some cases, they couldnt even afford a ball so they'd kick a makeshift ball which could be a can, some newspaper, plastic bags tied together tightly with strings, etc... in north america we dont know poverty the way other countries do. not saying poverty was the only reason why soccer was popularized but it was one big one for a lot of countries

There's a reason soccer is unpopular in North America, its because the players are pussies and its mind numbingly boring
