NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - RCMP in North Vancouver warn of an increase in the number of "at-risk" teen girls selling sex by placing ads on Craigslist. Police say the high school-age girls are being lured in to the trade with gifts and promises, but often end up trapped in violent situations.
Staff at a North Vancouver high school first told police about the increase, after hearing that some former students had been acting as pimps for some younger girls. RCMP Corporal Marlene Morton says the older men seem to be recruiting girls by giving them gifts and forming 'boyfriend-girlfriend' type relationships. But after a while, the situation turns threatening, and the girls are forced to pay for the elaborate gifts by working as prostitutes.
Morton says because the girls are all over the age of 16, placing the ad on Craigslist is not illegal. "My understanding is Craigslist are going to be looking at these ads, but at this point, I don't know what their stance on it all is."
Police say many of the girls come from unstable backgrounds. Morton says investigators have a good idea which men are running this ring and arrests may happen in the near future. RCMP will be working with more of these at-risk girls to ensure they aren't falling into this lifestyle.
