You didnt word that very well. The way you worded it I thought you were trying to say the actual price of gas will go up by 50%. Its just the carbon tax.
So an extra 1.2 cents a litre

I was there on Saturday. The Cheveron had 92 for $0.919 / L. 87 was $0.879 / L.

I'm going back on wednesday to pickup some tires, hopefully gas is still this cheap. But then again, the total difference is only around $4.00 cdn.

I'm pretty sure the same thing will happen where we hit close to $1.50/litre
There was an article posted here on RS too, summer = when everyone wants to drive, demand > supply, so higher prices

There is WAY more to it than that... I don't know all the details, but I can tell you that there is no reason to believe it will get anywhere close to $1.50/L again this summer.

Look at the chart of price of crude oil:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0f/Brent_Spot_monthly.svg

What happened in 2007 was a huge anomoly, and I can tell you that it wasn't just because of higher demand because of summer driving!

At this moment, it's still half the price of where it was last year... and unless you see it skyrocketing again in the next couple weeks, I can't see how you can expect there to be $1.50/L prices again this summer.

If there is.. it's not enforced.

Up until recently, the price of oil per barrel was pretty cheap... gas SHOULD have been around 70 cents a litre, even with all our taxes on it. But, it was sitting around a dollar all this time...

I saw a Pokemon card on Ebay for $300. I don't think it's worth $300 but some do. In Canada you can charge what ever you want for a product.

On Ebay yes you can charge $10,000 for a pair of socks and get away with it. However, rational consumer in a free market will always go for the best (lowest) ask price. Therefore just because a seller/business can charge $xxx for something doesn't mean they should if they want to be in business for the long run. I am just speaking purely from the marketing perspective. But there are also laws in Canada protecting consumers from predatory pricing so no you cannot as a business charge anything you want and get away with it.

That was my point. you can charge what ever you want but if no one buys it you would go broke.

No. Retailers can sell their goods for whatever price they want. Just that if they set it higher than others, nobody would buy it from them.

However, there IS a law that prevents retailers from colluding with each other to artificially mark the prices up together.

I mean, if an individual gas station decided to mark it up to $1.40/L, then obviously everyone would go to another gas station to fill up.

But if that gas station owner called up all the other gas station owners in the area and made a deal so that they all jacked it up to $1.40/L, then that's illegal.

not at all... its whatever the market will take...

If people stopped buying gas the price would go down...

Why don't we talk about all the increased revenue the government gets from these increased prices? We all blame the oil companies... but the government is partly at fault here...

People don't complain about the overinflated prices of luxury goods which have huge margins... its whatever the market can hold and is willing to pay...

luxury goods are not commodity item. but you are right, government is partially responsible for this as well.

But it's too difficult to have many ppl stood up at the same time and complain. We can only watch it soar however they like for now.
