Hey guys.
I'm thinking of upgrading from vista to windows 7. i can get windows 7 upgrade at FS for $54.99 w. canada day coupon.
but my friend told me that i'm stupid and i'm going to waste money buying it when i can just wait until it comes out and download it somewhere...
btw. mods if this is not appropriate feel free to remove this thread.
anyways, what happens if i do this? since i have a genuine copy of windows vista can i just download the update and i'll be good? no problems?
thanks.
I'd just buy it since you have a legit version of Vista. Think of how much the upgrade is ($55 + tax) and think about how many years you'll be using this OS. It costs next to nothing when you break it down that way.

honestly, even if we do, no one is going to come out and say "yeah, i use a pirated copy". If you can get the os at a price that you think is fair, go for it.

besides, its annoying having to patch WGA once in a while in order to have windows update working. too much hassle when windows 7 hp or pro upgrade is so cheap already.

Hey i never though of using the canada day coupon to buy the upgrade .. smart move.

It is such a hassle to use a pirated version of WIndows.
You cannot upgrade Windows 7 with a pirated Vista/XP. :)
I remember for my previous computer, and still usable by the way, requires to crack/bypass WGA for whatever Microsoft program you download.
With a legit Vista cd key for this current computer, I could care less how WGA works or wants to validate stuff.
A lot of ppl are doing the $10 off at FS to get Windows 7, the only price is paying $2 for shipping, so you're really only saving $8.

I'm pretty sure it's set for October 22.
Those using the RC won't expire till next year.
I think it's MS' way of being generous.

I would just buy an original. Too many hassles and updates you will need....especially with a newly released OS. There's bound to be updates.

^ true. If Windows 7 does stay for another 8-10 years, the upgrade is well worth the $65.
I thought that was back in the XP days.
I don't know anyone who uses a pirated Vista.

since it isn't in stock yet, you have to ship it..
if you try in store pick up you get this message;
"Some of the items in your shopping cart are not available for pick up in-store. Please remove these items and create a separate order for them, or check to see if the product is available for shipping. Items not available for pick up in-store are:
1. Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade"

No offense but your friend is the dumb one. Just buy the software and support the industry. Plus getting a genuine copy gives you perks of hassle free updates etc etc. People who keep on downloading software like Photoshop actually make Software more expensive. :/

Can someone tell me why are they coming out with a new window when Vista has only been out for 2 years??
I thought most OS have a cycle life of 5 - 7 years??
I was thinking about upgrading from XP to vista a few months back, should I wait for window 7?
What's the difference between the 2?

For an average home user, probably you would not notice anything different.
Aside from the new taskbar, stated to be 'faster' and 'lighter' than Vista.
From the major advertisement on Windows 7, one could assume something is major wrong with Vista
i use a pirated copy of xp sp3.
its slipstreamed with a lot of extras and tweaked for efficiency.
also i dont have to deal with any wga shit, its perfect.
and i wouldnt go for windows home.... not sure about windows 7 but windows vista home didnt even have RDP... one of the most useful tools in computing.

'cause Vista sucks? It's slow and a memory monster. That's why many manufactures offer downgrade to XP.
Definitely wait for 7.

I think i posted this somewhere else here...
For upgrades...
Microsoft is pleased to launch the Windows 7 upgrade option program and here are the details:
- If the end users purchase a new PC pre-installed with an eligible Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Business or Windows Ultimate from June 26 to January 31, 2010, they will receive a Windows 7 upgrade option form at the same time.
- Starting from June 26, end users can submit order via www.windows7upgradeoption.com and follow the online instructions for redemption. Submissions must be completed by February 28, 2010.
- Microsoft will start shipping the program upgrade media directly to qualifying end users after Windows 7 General Availability. (New Windows 7 will be available on October 22). End users will be notified of an estimated ship date with their website order confirmation.
- The final software fulfillment date/program end date is April 30, 2010.
- Limit of one offer form per qualifying new computer, one Windows 7 upgrade redemption per offer form; not to excceed 25 offer form redemptions per qualified customer.

i really havent bought an OS since like windows 2000 i think, so i might as well show some support and buy 7 ultimate when it comes out
I'm very impressed with the beta loaded onto my laptop as well, so no reason not to

Not really. Your post was asking if you had an original vista with a pirated windows 7 or something.
My post was asking if I could use BOTH the Vista and the Windows 7 on seperate computers. ^^

see if the vista upgrade trick works with 7.
with a copy of vista upgrade, you can install vista and choose to enter a serial later. then you reinstall it, but this time put in your upgrade serial and it'll accept your current no-cdkey version of vista as a previous copy of windows.

From release to end of support is about 5-10 years but release dates between OS's is about 2-3 years
The following is from Wikipedia, I've cut out the OS's that home users wouldn't have like NT and 2000. There was a period where MS tried splitting Windows into 2 flavours, one for home and one for business. With Windows XP, they merged the two back together using the NT core.
1985 Windows 1.01
1987 Windows 2.03
1989 Windows 2.11
1990 Windows 3.0
1992 Windows 3.1x
1995 Windows 95
1998 Windows 98
2000 Windows Me
2001 Windows XP
2007 Windows Vista
2009 (planned) Windows 7
The period between XP and Vista was so great because it was almost completely rewritten from scratch rather than making changes to the core and releasing a new version.
The 2-3 year product cycle goes for other OS's as well. About 6 months after Leopard was released, Apple already announced Snow Leopard. In Fact, in a 7 year period, Apple released OSX 10.0 to 10.5. That's almost one per year, Cheetah and Puma were released in the same year 6 months apart.
