I have driven manual for a couple months so give me a break :). Is resting your hand on the shifter bad? I read about it online and it says it will cause premature wear on the shifter forks and synchros.

If I want to shift quickly and do pedal to the metal shifts from 1-4, I would have to rest my hand on the shifter, would I? There's just no time to put your land back onto your lap and move it back to the shifter.

When I'm in stop and go traffic or slow movig traffic and I'm planning on shifting up/down in the next couple of ten seconds or so I would rest my hand on the shifter as well getting ready to shift. Am I doing damage to the syncros? What do you suggest if I shouldn't be doing this. I just findputting the hand back on my lap or streeting wheel is very inefficient. I like having my hand on the shifter - not really resting on it but just on it.

Unless you are actually going to shift that moment, you should have your hand - both your hands - on the steering wheel.

Now, you can argue this all day long, different people are comfortable in different positions, (I sometimes rest my hands on top of the wheel) but the safest, and most efficient way is both hands on the wheel at 3 and 9 at all times.

Driving in normal circumstances is easy with one hand, but if you have to make a sudden emergency maneuvre, you won't have the same authority when moving the steering wheel with one hand - especially if you get sideways and needs extra lock.

Resting your hand on the shifter does not damage anything unless you are actually putting a force on the shifter and nearly pushing it into the next gear.

Well even if you're going to do some hard launching or drag racing Rich's technique of returning to the wheel, that's how race car drivers do it, and the time in between gears is enough to do this motion

With that said I still like to keep my hand on the gearstick occasionally just to be more prepared for the next change,

If you leave it on the shift excessively like basically all the time, you can wear out the shift forks. Seen it happen on an IS300. Just resting on the shifter as you're accelerating through the gears, or preparing to shift soon, you won't hurt anything.

yeaah i agree with above post. should have ur hands 3 and 9.. though i leave my hand on the ebrake since in the 240 its right next to you.. but i think if ure not putting so much pressure on the stick it wont have a huge impact :S just my opinion

unless you gota fat ass hand, putting donw good pressure on the shifter
hold the shifter around, not over the top, problem solved

If you can't get your hand back to the wheel between shifts, you're moving too slow.

the effects of the damage from letting your hand rest on the shifter will probably be, depending on how much weights on it, be felt in liek 400k km

Resting your hand on the shifter isn't going to do much. I have a 18yr old car and the shifter is just fine. I rest my hand on it every now and then.

i tie my hand to the shifter and then drift mountain roads.

duct tape your left hand to shifter and right hand to the steering wheel and let's race. Yes I mean you have to drive with arms crossed.
