.........or is this Island Forum slowly dying from lack of interest? Maybe it's just slow because everybody's at the beach with all the nice weather.

Yeah vistangers.ca has been slow recently too. I don't know why, as I'm not really aware of any other big automotive forums that are local.

As a general enthusiast I hang out here and vistangers regularly. My only real gripe with both sites is that trying to sell stuff in the buy/sell forums is just an exercize in futility as nobody seem to have 2 cents to rub together and people expect you to deliver stuff you are giving away, and that said stuff better be MINT!!!!

Can't blame the weather today....

You're right Cornel, we've lost a lot of the regulars this year. It's kind of sad really. Maybe we need some big event to draw people back.

Or maybe we all need to get outside more. I'm happy either way.

recently? RS has been dead for about the past year.

I think it has to do with the fact there is no specific reason for people to post here. Anyone after specific information can get better information at car/model specific forums. My interests right now are s2000's and Tacoma's and there isnt really anything I can find out here I couldnt find out in better detail at other sites. I am not insulting RS, just saying it really only exists because people here share a general respect for vehicles.

The Timmie's Friday night meet seems to be fading away too. I'm lucky if I know more than a couple of people when I go once in a while now. I think maybe we do need a meet so that more people can get to know each other again.

Sites been dead for nearly 2 years now.

I haven't had motivation to do anything for it in some time. One day we will do a reunion cruise, but even then I doubt it will be organized through this site. Sad, but understandable... We'll always have the super cruises to remember.

But another thought, how is VMSC/Porsche Club/SISLRA participation this year?

But another thought, how is VMSC/Porsche Club/SISLRA participation this year?

VMSC has been having very good turnouts this year. We usually have a bit of a summer lull with entries around the low 30s, but we had 49 entries this past Saturday and have been consistent all season. Porsche Club has had a resurgence this year too after a very poor year last year.

Been dying/dead for a while. Sadly, it seems that the import scene and culture kind has a bit overall.

Ever since I started working Friday nights I haven't been able to go to timmies meets. In-person meets and events were a big factor of keeping the community alive probably. The memories = priceless!

I never came here for real car info. The specific reason is that it's local, and you can meet local people, do local things, talk about local shit.

I have to strongly agree here. I admit I have turned into quite the asshole here in the last couple of years, primarily because I'm sick of the idiocy on this board. There was a time when 95% of the membership on the island was actually like a big family, sure there was a bit of infighting here and there, but it was mostly over and done with quickly and people became closer from it.

This newer influx of the next generation has only really frustrated others with the constant misinformation, arguing, thefts, and consistent bullshit has driven away pretty much 80% of the old membership.

I am still an admin not because I want to, but because no one wants it. I don't even do anything here anymore, but no one cares, and really why should they. This place is a joke now.

As far as I am concerned this place peaked over the years 2002-2005, those were the best years, the best membership, the best meets, and the best events. All this is now is empty space.

Long live Pickles Threads, Super Cruises, Friday night TIMMIES MEETS when there were so many people there you couldn't even drive through the lot.

Long live late nights in Sooke and Durrance when the cops didn't give a fuck, Christmas food drives, and spring meets at lot four in UVic!

And long live friends that were made because of this forum and the people that made it incredible for those years.

And fuck the rest.

That must of been 2001 cause I came in early 02 and I don't think I ever saw Chris drive the blue civic, he had bought the black EG by the time I came along.

RS has introduced me to some awesome people and great friends and attended some awesome events over the years so I have nothing too bad to say but its defanitly not what it was then.

too many thefts are keeping ppl away from posting their projects and heading out for meets.

as well, most of the guys that started this site have gotten older and priorities have changed.

You pretty much nailed it ; I'v got two ongoing projects (the STI and the Integra) and rarely have time even to touch them other than to drive to work. 90-120 hours of work each week really dissolves any free time that you might have to invest in your cars.

Sadly, I keep amassing parts for each cars with the intent of working on them. Sitting in my parents garage, for instance, are brand new calipers, Power Slot slotted rotors, stainless brake lines, Hawk HPS pads, Sparco Torino seats, a Mugen camcover, a Spoon exhaust and so on and so forth and that's just for the Integra. I have an even more absurd pile of parts for the STI that have been gathering dust for years.

It's just a challenge to balance work, life, and hobbies when you aren't fresh out of high-school with a significant amount of social time at your disposal. I remember how great it was to spend a lot of time on here back in 2000 and 2001 with Jas, Chris, Steve, Prashant, Darren, Eric, Ian, etc., etc., but people eventually move on and let's be honest, within a mainstream context the import/sport-compact scene is effectively dead so Revscene is attracting new membership.

The Internet in general has seen its forums participation fall overall.I post at several computer tech boards as well as a couple other auto forums and some general OT type messageboards and all have seen a major decline in posts. It might be people are bored ,it may be Twitter and Facebook type apps have taken over, remember when everyone used an instant messenger app,yep times change.

I think new cars are a big reason why the import scene is slowly dying off. Now you can buy a new 370z with massive rims, 330hp, fully loaded, exceptional handling, nice styling etc. for some 40k. Is there really any point in modding anymore? What are you going to do? Swap the 19's for 20's?

This was just after Dave and I spent like 8hrs trying to change the spark plugs on his Camaro.

Nightwalker

I don't think new cars or theft are really to blame for the decline in the scene. What makes up the bulk of enthusiasts and probably bulk of the money being spent as well are teenagers and young people that can't afford a $40,000 car. That's why they buy cheap used ones and tune them in the first place. Hell, I can't afford a $40,000 car.

Everything has it's hayday, times have changed and the new blood that fills out the forum and scene in general are doing other things. Socially they've had different influences as well. When I started gas prices were relatively low, you didn't really see any "go green" campaigns in the media, and my peers didn't really have an interest in those things either. I'm sure being constantly surrounded by this coming up to the age you start driving has an influence.

stevo911_
08-16-2009, 05:56 PM

I haven't logged onto the site in many months but I was shocked to see how few threads were active on the Island forums. I think there are like 7 or 8 that have been posted in in the last MONTH in General Chat.

Lots of memories in this thread though. Thinking back to the 02-05 days like Steve mentioned brought a smile to my face, I kind of miss those nights when we used to cruise around until 3am in Sooke, the West Shore, Durrance (haha). I'd love to go for a reunion cruise sometime, if it's ever organized please drop me a line. I promise I'm not such a wanker anymore :lol and it would be cool to see what everyone's upto these days.

I ride by the Friday night Timmies meets all the time and still see some familiar faces and cars now and then though they're dwindling in numbers for sure. Times change, people change, sad reality. If it makes you "old folks" feel better, the same thing is happening to the vw scene.but the new blood is starting to plan things, I think it's sort of cyclical.

I agree with whoever said forums are sort of a dying thing. I rarely check forums anymore, mostly because the time I used to use doing that has been replaced by facebook/twitter/etc. Also, with everyone having a smartphone, I wouldn't be suprised if actual time on the computer at home has gone down.

This place taught me a lot though, so it would be sad to see it fade away.

kelownacarlife alot of those guys came originally form RS but apparently didnt like the style and rules of RS so they started there own forum and club but most local forums have turned into basically a Buy and Sell for performance parts i also noticed on alot of forums there is alot of dising ppl and there rides because they're riced out or they ask stupid questions that they should know the answer to. No wants to to be in a environment that ppl are negative and shit al they want to do is find some info on some thing and move on.

Striking a balance between rules and tolerating some shenanigans is tough balance. Without mods to crack down on ass clowns things would get out of hand and retards take over, and people who can breathe through their noses and have a job get driven off. As a relative noob I can say that at least part of the lack of new regulars is the intimidation of walking into a tight knit group of long time friends. Less than tolerant responses to questions would certainly aggravate that (although I haven't seen that personally).

That said, I can agree with the other points that have been made. Make/model specific forums will always be the best source for information, posting your project and it's mods is a great way to have it targeted by thieves, and the forum scene is slowly being killed by more inane things like facebook and twitter.

I think some more organized and higher profile meets, especially daytime meets, would be a good way to bring some fresh blood to the scene.

Maybe a vigilante car thief hunting group would be a good way to bring everyone together lol.

I've only ever gone with friends, but what I have noticed is the influx of RHD cars. It seemed in the summer the lot was a majority of JDM cars. My guess is this might have something to do with the scene.
