My brother sent me a blue ray movie/ 720p through an instant chat window. When I tried playing I could hear the sound clearly but the video is very choppy and freezes.

Do I need a better more recent computer?

Although it's not free, you can try installing CoreAVC to let it decode the video. It's a bit lighter on the processor usage. Upgrading the RAM may help as well... Vista runs like ass on only 1GB of memory.

Personally, I'd blow away Vista, and reinstall XP onto your laptop. It's what I did for my gf's dad's laptop, and it no longer takes 15 min to boot up and check email.

not sure about 720p, but most 1080p video require either LOTS of processing power (something equivalent to a X2 4600+) or a dedicated graphic card to play smoothly even with the right codec.

I wouldn't be surprised if you laptop is too slow to play any HD video.
I don't think adding ram would help your video playback, but you'd probably want to have at least 2GB anyway if you are running vista.

If you're on Vista, recommended is 2GB of RAM. The first thing I'd do is to upgrade the RAM. If that doesn't work, and you really want to watch it badly on your laptop, I'd reinstall XP on it. It'll run a lot smoother on a less extensive operating system. It may also help if you have a bunch of video codecs to uninstall them all, and just install ffdshow/Media Player Classic.

my suggestion:

1) add more RAM, see how that goes.
2) try VLC or other lightweight media players and codec sets
3) dualboot Linux or XP onto a tiny partition just for watching HD videos
4) give up

I have Core2duo 2ghz and 2gb of RAM, only then is the computer not running sluggish with Vista.

you're running a heavily compressed high definition file on a laptop with a 1.6ghz processor. installing coreavc isnt going to do shit, since that'll just offload the decoding to the video card which is probably an onboard gma on a laptop with these specs.

cpu was bouncing back and forth between 60-99, when I closed movie it went back to 4-15

Mem is 714 while I watch the movie and it remained at 714 when I closed the window.

720p movie doesn't tell us a lot of things....a 720p can be 11000Kbps or 900Kbps
if a DVD player can play it without a problem, your C2D should handle it.

I had same issues on my old comp.

It was a 'mkv' file.

Turned out my processor was just too slow. I ended up OC'ing the CPU and it helped a little but still too slow.

coreavc would actually probably be the best bet. I have a 1.6ghz Single Core Atom processor with no vid card, and i installed CoreAVC and i can play 720p fine... it changes how your computer decodes the video and it uses much less resources so it doesn't lag like it did before...

but ya, adding a gig of ram would definitely help, but coreavc would be the first free option. i don't know why you would dismiss that right away when you have no idea what it does in the first place.

That helped alot. but every 20 seconds its freezez and goes back to normal. im going to add 1gb of ram today and see if that helps. thanks for all your help guys.

I would like to stream blu ray movies to my home theatre using this laptop. My lcd tv is a 42" toshiba 1080p. If I went back to xp could I still stream without windows vista? I got an xbox 360 wirless hooked up to my tv. Would i need a dedicated video card to make the video smoother on my tv or not? Im really trying to save money and dont want to go out and buy a new setup.

good point, on mine power save runs the processor at 50%, even when plugged in. stupid idea.

graphics card doesn't help stream afaik, and yes you can use XP to stream, try TVersity.

affordable external storage = external HDD. yes some blu ray movies will fit on a DVD but some are a lot larger (transformers = 12GB for me)
