Because of the lighter mass of the engine and cars up front, it stops right away, the rest of the train has a much greater mass and plowed on through even with full brakes. Lucky that it was a light tap and not worse.

That is an old video... happened on the Harvard sub, Illinois in January 2008. Google 'Tornado derailment harvard sub -video' if you want some pictures and information about it. Quote:

Anxious moments when the tanker car was coming up... and even though it looks like it's travelling so slowly, that thing ain't stopping! It's got a hell of a lot of momentum to keep driving it forward...

I never said the engineer dumped his air. I'm stipulating that air was lost during the derailment when the hoses separated. By lighter mass, I meant the tanker and all of the cars behind it.
