METRO VANCOUVER — A car driving the wrong direction down Highway 99 caused an accident Tuesday evening that closed more than eight kilometres of highway.
"We did have a vehicle travelling southbound on Highway 99 in the northbound lanes. As a result of that, we've got a serious motor vehicle crash with fairly signifcant injuries," said RCMP spokesman Cpl. Peter Thiessen.
He said several vehicles were involved, and multiple agencies were investigating.
The accident closed Highway 99 in both directions for much of Tuesday evening, from Highway 99A in Surrey to just past the junction with Highway 91 in Delta.
Highway 91 was also closed southbound between Highway 10 and Highway 99.

At least once a week, I almost go head on with another car going the wrong way in a downtown alley. Cars always ignore the do not enter sign.

Bit of a difference between an alley with signs and a freeway which you really have to fuck up to end up going the wrong way.

Didn't Germany have a major problem a few years back with suicidal idiots going the wrong way on the autobahn?
And yah, downtown is especially bad late night when there's no traffic on the roads and some idiots don't read the one way signs. Just this month I've witnessed 4 cars going the wrong way, one guy actually had the nerve to finger and swear at someone who flashed there lights, lol.

I usually get fingered when I point out that it's a one way. In this city, whoever yells loudest wins but ya know what, they keep driving like that, they'll get theirs one day...

I was actually right there probably 5 minutes after it happened (before the cops/ambulance arrived). Both cars were just completely SMASHED and the driver of 1 of the cars was already sitting on the grassy area off the Highway. She looked ok. However, I was not able to see where the other driver was.

This was only 1 of 2 accidents within minutes of each other in the same stretch. CTV said she may have caused both the accidents.
It was on global news last night and one witness said the woman was driving normally, she wasn't swerving, just driving straight in the on-coming lane. Although, with everyone in that lane swerving out of HER way, she must have known....right?!

agreed
Innocent people have to die or get injured due to some fuckin dumb bitch who can't read signs. As others have said, if it's downtown it's not as bad especially with the slower speeds, but we're talking the freeway here?? How does one go up the wrong on-ramp?

Anyone know which specific area of the highway this occurred? The description is a bit vague. Specifically I'm wondering which interchange where the driver started going the wrong way.

Both of us were like wtf. The BMW hits the end of the block (Robson) and Bam, unmarked cruiser that happened to be on Robson lights right up. We were :lol for 5 minutes.

hello everyone,
i just wanted to apologize for causing this highway accident. my driving visor (pls dont make fun) strap came off on the back, which momentarily blocked my vision, causing me to accelerate to 320km/h+++, hit a barrier, roll mid-air and land on top of a mini-cooper. i understand that it was a serious accident, but everyone should be OK with it because i waved "sorry" after it happened.
pics of my defective driving visor. i recommend that you folks dont get this, as it is poor in quality

And she caused TWO separate accidents. I heard on the news that she was driving 100km/h in the wrong direction! Wouldn't common sense tell you to get the fuck off the road?!

Common Sense. Old people don't have it.
We need a motivational poster for this one;)
BTW, I saw the pile-up when heading back from Seattle yesternight at 12am. It was still nasty. Trucks and police everywhere on the southbound lane. Cars were strewn all over the side of the highway.

I've seen this before on Hwy 91. It was an elderly woman, as was the case here. She didn't seem to know she was going the wrong way at all. Just drove normally and was actually staring as other drivers as she approached...like everyone else was wrong.

Some old dood just "pulled a Hwy99" this morning near where I live (King Ed and McDonald) right when I was explaining this incident to my friend!, going "up" the hill when everyone else was going down. Good thing he came to his senses after the car in front of me and I both honked him.
Easiest way to catch everyone? Force everyone to redo a test each time your license gets renewed. Since you gotta come in anyways, why not spend 1h doing a test?

it's been said so many times on these forums
ICBC should have mandatory driving exams for seniors every 3 years
with emphasis on vision, traffic signs, and reflex testing??

3 years?
More like a yearly exam.
When you get old your senses can deteriorate real quickly.
