VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - One week to go before the skies over English Bay are lit up with colourful explosions. Canada goes first when the HSBC Celebration of Light kicks off next Wednesday night.

Canada is defending champion, thanks to the Godzilla-themed show. This year they're bringing you to the land of Oz, with their take on the classic Wizard of Oz story they're calling No Place Like Home. Team Canada's performance will be followed by efforts from South Africa, the U.K. and China. There is no grand finale this time.

Liz at the Boathouse Restaurant on English Bay says staff love fireworks nights and so do their customers. "The phones have not stopped ringing about fireworks reservations, so we'll see. We do sell out most of the time. If we don't sell out, we just open it to the public the day of [the event]."

The fireworks start at 10 p.m.--rain or shine--and your best views can be found at English Bay, Kitsilano, Vanier Park, Jericho Beach. Just like last year, you can vote for your favorite by texting LIGHT to 100100. However, the English Bay beach party starts at 6:30 p.m. with free performances from the likes of Wide Mouth Mason and 54-40.

Of course, fireworks nights mean traffic restrictions--the West End will be closed to traffic at 7:30 and Kits Point will be blocked at 6 each competition night. Stay tuned to News1130 traffic each night for updates.

August is suppose to be the hottest and Sept's are usually very nice but it's suppose to be mild this winter because El Nino is back which means more rain less snow. It might cause problems in Feb if we don't get enough snow.

Many many years ago when I was in Grade 12 (circa 1998), I was with many friends walking peacefully up Robson street after the fireworks. A fight broke out where about 10 East Indian guys beat up several other East Indian guys, they then ran down the street yelling loudly how they "beat the F out of them" etc, so loud that they were easily the center of attention. Out of nowhere and suddenly, all these plainclothes officers arrested them. The whole street laughed, and then I walked past and pointed at one of them and did the Nelson Munz from Simpsons laugh. "HA-HA!"

I wonder if that was us, LOL. We use to get into so many fights during the fireworks but I remember this one huge fight we had, not sure what year it was maybe 96 or 97, but it was a whole bunch of EI guys, white guys, asian guys uniting to beat up a group of 20 white guys who decided to bear spray the crowd which was basically all families in front of that hotel on Robson. A couple of the guys got it real good, the others just ran.

I don't see how that is relevant? ok, yeah, so I'm chinese but I was born in Canada? Shouldn't I be bragging about how mind-numbingly good (read: hurtin') the Canadian show was?

UK show was decent (with such a low standard set by Canada) but by no means is it better than the China show.

I cannot comment on the South Africa show, however.
