So, who wants to go?

I'd love to... dunno if the budget will allow tho. What weekend does it go this year?

Senna4ever

August 7~9.

I'm most likely going on August 9th i believe if my schedule works out how i think.

I'm going on the 9th. I will be taking the 5DmkII & 500mm if I can.

Boostslut

Very nice! For the airshow application, would you bring a crop and a 400mm or full frame? I was thinking a wide angle for static planes, and tele. I love the view-finder on the full frame with the 400, although the tracking ability of the 40D is better than the 5D.

Senna4ever
07-21-2009, 10:41 PM
Shit, is the 5DmkII that bad? Maybe I'll bring the 1DsmkIII or maybe I'll bring the Nikon D700 & 500mm f4.

Boostslut
08-06-2009, 01:10 PM
What setup should i take to the airshow? I have 5DII 40D, a 400mm, a 70-200mm. Which setup for in-flight? crop or full frame + 400? I was gonna go with the 5d + 17-40mm for static displays. :)

Senna please don't bring the Canon 500mm. If i see you i might just have to pick one up. You have no clue how bad i've been lusting over that lens. and a 1.4x. Yum!

Senna4ever
08-06-2009, 04:12 PM
I'd say slap the 70-200 on the 40D and put the 400mm on the 5DmkII. The use the 5D + 17-40 for the static displays.

Are you going on Sunday? I'll be in the reserved seating area with workmates.

Boostslut
08-06-2009, 06:53 PM
I've thought about going in the better seating myself to get a great view of everything, including taking off and landing. I love the photo's of the planes with their jet wash coming off the back. I'll have to look into that. :)

Thanks for the advice!

i'm going tomorrow. got some corporate chalet tickets. will be my first air show lol. don't got the range for shooting tho... so will just most likely try and take some and crop!

how do u guys go about shooting these? fast shutter speed or pan?

Senna4ever
08-07-2009, 11:28 PM
Take at least a 200mm lens. With propeller driven aircraft, use a slower shutter speed of around 1/125 to blur the props....frozen props on a plane look wrong. With jets, I usually switch to aperture priority and shoot at f8. Remember to meter the planes, not the sky, unless you want to get some cool silhouette photos.

I'm going Sunday for sure.

I got some good ones, too, with my old 75-300 on my 40D at the Pitt Meadows airshow this year. If it's a nice sunny day, you can usually get away pretty good with slower lenses.

The snowbirds had a different routines for Friday and Saturday. While on coffee break (I work in the large hanger on the east side of yxx) they did had a different routine compared to what I saw on Saturday. The cloud was really low on Saturday. Friday I think was a bit better. Nonetheless even a low show was still really good. It was great to see Hawk One fly.

Oh, I don't know. I liked it. I don't really like the Blue Angels or Thunderbirds, as they're all about speed and power, unlike the Snowbirds that showcase precision and skill. The F117 stealth fighter was retired just over a year ago, so you'll never see it again. The F22 has taken its place, so maybe we'll see it here soon? The B2 bomber cannot fly under 3000 or 5000 feet for security reasons, so even if it was scheduled to do a flyby, you wouldn't have seen it.

A few years ago, the B-2 did exactly 2 flybys. It was scheduled for a Saturday show only. It basically flew like multiple airshows (cannot remember how many) one day, and yxx was one of its shows. It never landed, it just came and went. It was pretty neat to see it.

I think it was 2005 when the B2 was last here. I don't have any digital images of it, so it must have been 2005, as I got my DSLR in October of that year. I seem to recall the B2 on static display a number of years back, but I might be wrong.

Did anyone spot the EA-6B Prowler at the static displays on the weekend? I went on the friday and it wasn't there, but its listed on the airshow website (which warns military commitments may prevent aircraft from attending). Also, did they open up a C-17 Globemaster for static display so you could walk into it?

Man, the 1DsmkIII is a crappy piece of shit. The AF works like a champ, but the AE is so unreliable. The screen sucks so much it's difficult to gauge focus. I lost a ton of images that should have been good due to the AE.

Senna what settings were you using for shooting? Where you locked in to Tv and used EC or where you going manual?

For the most part, I would shoot the jets using aperture priority at f8, for the propeller planes, shutter priority at 1/125sec~1/250sec to blur the propellers. As the 1DsmkIII was so bad with AE, I ended up shooting manually for the most part.

So I guess no one looked at the static displays to see if they had the EA-6B Prowler and C-17 Globemaster? May not be able to see the Prowler in a couple years since the US Navy is phasing them out.

Another easy way to tell the difference between and F-15 and F-18, especially in head- or tail-on shots: the F-15's vertical stabilizers are actually vertical, while the F-18's angle outward at the top.

wow i am surprised you used aperture priority for shooting jets. Do you find that there are better results compared to shooting in shutter priority set at 1/1000sec?

Why are you surprised? For jets you just need to set a certain depth of field to keep the plane in focus. Let the camera set the shutter speed. If you shoot on shutter priority set at 1/1000sec, it was so bright that day, that your aperture could go down to f22 or f27, which would make your image less sharp due to diffraction. F5.6 ~ f11 is the sweet spot of any lens - that's where it is the sharpest. Unless I need the depth of field, I never shoot anything at over f16.

Soundy
08-23-2009, 10:10 AM
With objects moving that fast, you really want to get the most DOF you can, and the only way to assure that is to lock down your aperture - you don't want it dropping if the scene darkens and leaving your plane out of focus.

I found when shooting stock cars, I was actually better off metering off the pavement (a medium grey) and then locking my exposure in manual... there was so much variation in the brightness of the colors of the cars, with everything from all-black to all-white and three dozen levels in between, that my exposure was swinging 2-3 stops through the course of a race... I'd end up with white cars looking grey on a really dark field, and black cars looking grey and speed-smeared on a washed-out field.

I don't imagine planes are much different.

Seems to me "two stops down from wide open" has traditionally been the rule-of-thumb for most lenses' sharpest aperture.
