My GF is flying into Van in August, so I'm going to come over from Vic and meet her there to spend a couple nights. We're looking for a nice hotel that's not too expensive, near-ish downtown. Doesn't have to be anything fancy, but weather permitting we'd like to walk more than drive, so a good location is preferred.
And speaking of nice places, some good restaurant ideas would be much appreciated, doesn't really matter where, but near whatever hotel would be awesome.
Thanks in advance.

you really need to give a price range man.
Or everyone will just give you the ones on Burrard St.

Well i'm not sure what you consider expensive but if imo The Metropolitan hotel downtown is not too bad. Pretty nice, across the street from PC so your in the heart of downtown. They also have a restaurant in the hotel called Diva At The Met which imo is the best place in Vancouver hands down. Price wise I just did a random check for August 17th and the regular deluxe room is $150/night. Not sure if that's considered too much or ok for you but go take a look.

Places to Sleep:
Fairmont
Sutton
Shangri-la
Places to eat that I frequent:
Bacchus
Hy's
La Terrazza (only good for the wine - the food is not good)
etc
It really depends on what you enjoy eating. Some people are just as happy to have a burger at McDonalds or Wendy's if it's their birthday. It's up to what you like.

DIVA @ THE MET is one of my favourites, i had my birthday dinner there, the appetizers are soo killer..bit pricey though, and portions are small
JOE FORTES is another fave or mine, and KOBE on alberni, as well

Damn this is in true Chuck Norris fashion....super baller for those places...but they are nice....
You seriously have to give us a price range...most of the stuff DT Van is just unreasonably expensive
Hotel
No clue unless you have a price range
for food i would
Affordable (< 30$ per person)
- Japadog (outside sutton place on Burrard...it's a hot dog stand but it's good)
- Hons (Chinese food for reasonable price on Robson St)
- Cafe Crepe (Crepes for reasonable price)
- Numero Uno Pizza near Granville st?
- Mondo Gelato (gelato)
- Marble Slab (ice cream)
- Concession stand on First Beach or Second beach (i think) they serve some decent and cheap burgers
- Tanpopo (all you can eat sushi...not that good but good selection and reasonable price. I think it's 25$ for all you can eat dinner....on Denman by Davie (close to English bay)
- Kintaro Ramen (noodle shop...Robson and Denman)
-Ebi-ten (Japanese fast food by the Central Library...mediocre food)
Not so cheap but not extremely expensive (30$ - 60$ per person)
- The Keg on Burrard
- Joeys on Burrard
- Boathouse by English Bay
- Caderos on Coal harbour on Cadero street (I like their Oyster burger...i normally hate oysters too!)
- Seawall Bar and Grill inside Westin Bayshore (by coal harbor)
- Ebisu (Japanese food...on Robson i think)
- Guu (Japanese Tapas on Robson and one in Gastown)
- Happa (Japanese Tapas on Robson and Nicola)
- Bridges (A west coast fushion seafood type place on granville island....you take an Aquabus to grandville island from Yaletown...it's pretty nice if it's a nice day out)
- Sandbar (also on grandville island....$$$$$$$$$ asian fushion food)
- The stone grill (in yaletown somewhere...you cook your food on hot stones)
- Kobe Teppanyaki (Alberni street....Japanese Teppanyaki...food's mediocre but the servers are hot and it's a fun atmosphere)
- Kirin (Chinese food on Alberni)
this is from the top of my head....lol
hope this helps...
other RSer please feel free to add/correct/make fun of this list...

Buchan Hotel in the west end
like $50/night, nothing fancy, but in a great neighbourhood, nicely kept
robson is a 5minute walk away
tremendous restaurant right at the bottom, very romantic, $30-60/person
Sandman hotel on Davie has best deal around downtown core i think ...
There is full kitchen and pretty roomy

Sorry, forgot to check this thread.
If it could be kept under $100 a night that'd be great, but I don't know what hotel prices are like in Van. $100ish isn't bad though if it comes to it.
I'll check out those recommendations so far, thanks guys.
Food doesn't have to be anything fancy, I plan to take her for her first shwarma, for example, but no McDonalds (not that I'm against it, she just doesn't like McDonalds).

EXV603: that looks nice, but the nights we're there are the 12th, 13th and maybe 14th, and that's blacked out 13-15.
