"A fin whale has been impaled and killed on a Princess cruise ship that docked in the Port of Vancouver Saturday morning. The whale, about 20 metres long, was wrapped around the bow of the ship Saturday in full view of tourists at Canada Place, many snapping pictures of the disturbing sight."

so was the whale swimming out in the georgia straight and has been dragged into the port? or it was wandering around the burrard inlet near the port?

lol, it doesn't have to be. Most animals would run when they see something bigger than they are come toward them. Then there's the few that like to stare at the headlights of an oncoming car..

ya.. i know.. whales need to surface the water to get some air. Hence you see those whales blowing water out of their holes on top of their head.

I know they need air. All i said was that i just find it funny.

coast guard came and pulled it off with commercial tugs. i heard something about a necropsy being done by the fisheries dept. to learn more about it because fin whales are rare and are not commonly seen. afterwards it's going to be towed somewhere near vancouver island and sunk so that it will decompose naturally.

ugh. still... driving a car and hitting a bird or raccoon and having it stuck in the front of your ride is one thing, but this :(

when did I say that humans did not take precedence over whales? I'm not saying that the fucking cruise ship should have done something to risk humans or anything like that.

up until the mid 19th century the oceans were pretty noise free. commincation with other creatures, location of hazards, familiar routes, and preditors came easy and was possible for perhaps hundreds of miles. ships and other man-made noise in the oceans can easily drown out their abilities and cause confusion. also, ships can travel at much faster speeds and in an unfamiliar manor to which a whale might be able to judge.

there trying to figure out if the whale was dead already, or if it died after being hit by the ship. Apparently if the cruise ship hit it and that ended up killing the whale, then the company that owns the cruise ship gets a hefty fine. Poor whale though.

Boats have been around for many many centuries. You'd think that by now they'd adapt and know how to avoid them

Then again you can argue how big our oceans are and the chance of a whale seeing a boat out in the open sea may be fairly small.

Think Darwin, "survival of the fittest", this whale should've sense the approaching ship and dodge it. It is a sad news, but probably it was slow to react/blindness/ or impaired mobility to begin with

Then again you can argue how big our oceans are and the chance of a whale seeing a boat out in the open sea may be fairly small.
boats have been around for thousands of years, powered by wind or muscle which make virtually no noise. only in the last 150 years or so have they utilized engine technology, a byproduct of which is high amounts of noise pollution. thats not a lot of time for a species to adapt, particularly one on the verge of exstinction.

one must consider the huge amount of traffic in the shipping lanes which run up and down continents and across oceans where its quite unlikely to go more than a few hours without being able to visually spot another ship. many fish and mammals have migration routes that span thousands of miles of ocean and we know so little about the nature of these routes. if a shipping lane happens to lie across one of these routes, its like a herd of ducks trying to cross a busy 4 lane highway.

as to the amount of noise a ship can produce. low pitch sounds like the noise of a large ship's engines travel further than high pitch sounds, thus why early warning systems such as low pitched fog horns are used in shipping. humans have horrible hearing abilities underwater - if someone is yelling at me underwater more than 5 ft away, i can't hear them. yet i can easily hear a high pitched speed boat ripping across the lake when its more than a km away.

Fin Whale buried at sea
Whale was found impaled on a cruise ship, Saturday

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The 70-tonne carcass of a Fin Whale, found impaled on a cruise ship Saturday at Canada Place, has been sent to a watery grave.

The Vancouver Sun reports the carcass was dropped far off the western coast of Vancouver Island sometime Monday evening. Investigators are still waiting for results of a necropsy before they can determine if the whale died when it was hit or if it was already dead.

Well if you are stupid enough to be listening to your ipod, while texting your mates and happened to be creamed by a car. It is totally your fault. As a matter of fact I wished it happened more often to keep pedestrians more alert on the sidewalk instead of Jay-Walking when ever. If you're too poor to drive, don't fucking go out, or prepare to suffer the consequences for it.

On a side note if you are religious, take comfort in knowing your all-mighty god has planned this event for you and you shall greatly accept it with out worry. Your death will be quick and painless and the trip to heaven will be brief. After a short conversation at the Pearly Gates, you will be dropped straight to hell for criticizing the death of a whale many moons ago on an internet forum.

Speaking of whales, what ever happened to that native tribe/band that raised such a stink about the fact they should have the right to hunt whales in the traditional manner? Those guys are so hilarious. For all the times they've been out there, they've come back empty handed. I bet if there were a dozen whales in Trout Lake, those poor excuse for warriors would still come up empty handed. Too many chiefs, no indians............. LOL. See, even natives are getting soft.
