VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Organizers of Celebration of Light say the event will go on, despite the weather. Vancouver's Virgin Festival has been cancelled for the evening. The Whitecaps game has been halted. Over 5,000 BC Hydro customers are without power.

Showers rolled in along English Bay just after the dinner hour, soaking the crowd, but most are taking it in stride. One dad who drove his kids in from Cloverdale to watch the show and has built shelter with driftwood on the beach, and a tarp from his trunk, "We don't know what it's going to be like a little bit later, but I'm looking forward to it, I think everybody is looking forward to it, no matter what [the weather]."

Lifeguards were even clearing the water due to lightning concerns.

It's round two of the Celebration of light as South Africa takes the stage in the sky over English Bay. They will be trying to out-do Canada's Wednesday night performance.

I was working at the Whitecaps game and it was insane. Play was suspended with 5 minutes left of the first half because of the lightning and thunder and a lot of our concession stands had to close because of metal pole issues haha.. anyway. I can't remember the last time I've seen torrential rain fall like that. I left work at 9:15 and fans were still waiting for the game to start up again. The sky was amazing too.

Two people hit by lightning in Golden Ears Park
Pair taken to hospital in stable condition

MAPLE RIDGE (NEWS1130) - What's the chance of being struck by lightning? Whatever it is... two people in Maple Ridge are lucky to be in stable condition in hospital after they were hit this evening.

Around 7:30p.m., RCMP Sergeant Roger Lauzon explains the man and woman were camping in Golden Ears Park, when lightning hit a nearby tree, "Lightning just hit the top of one of the trees there and carried through the tree. At the base of the tree it exited, then went through one vehicle, disabled the vehicle, activated the airbags, and then went out one tail light into another vehicle and did the same thing."

From there, the lightning hit the pair as they were walking by. Lauzon doesn't know if they were blown down by the lightning itself, or the blast as it exited the two cars. He expects the two to make a full recovery.

Sounds like such a bullshit story.

What an UNREAL day...lol Forecast's calls for high of 32's yesterday and as I'm driving to lunch, it starts to rain. So I call my friends up and asked them "Hows the beach? at 4pm" and they said it wasn't raining, so I went. Picked up a friend at 6 then bounced to DT, paid $5 in parking and it starts to rain even harder...FML

Walked up and down Robson to find a place to eat while getting absolutely SOAKED in the process...Beautiful...eventually we decided to just book it outta DT and eat somewhere else...talk about a waste of time..

PS: It's pretty slippery on the road, you guys should be careful. Saw some minivan brake too late and skidded into the intersection, had to reverse back.

Never trusted Weather Network. Always found it to be WAY off. We tried using it when I was working with the CASCAR team years ago, it was always wrong, every city we were in.

I think there's an inherent trust with weatheroffice, since that IS Environment Canada's own site, who are the people most other sites get their info from.

Well, there were definitely ppl leaving, but to my surprise, there were still a lot of ppl. Everyone shouted in excitement every time a huge lightning struck! A lot of ppl had umbrellas, but the announcer recommended we not use the umbrellas for safety reasons...prob don't want lightning to struck anyone! :haha:
Eventually we all got wet and don't care anymore...and enjoyed the fireworks while standing up. :p
