BEIJING, July 27 -- Hu Jintao, top leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC), sent a congratulatory message on Monday to Taiwan's Ma Ying-jeou, who was elected chairman of the Kuomintang (KMT) Sunday, sources from the CPC Central Committee said.
Hu, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, said in the message that he hoped the two political parties could continue to push forward the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, deepen mutual political trust, keep working for the interests of compatriots across the Strait, and rejuvenate the Chinese nation.
In his reply to Hu's message, Ma expressed his gratitude to Hu's congratulation, saying that cross-Strait relations had embarked on a road of peaceful development and mutual prosperity through joint efforts based on the 1992 consensus.
The two parties needed to keep on working together under the principles of facing reality, building mutual trust, laying aside disputes and creating a win-win situation, Ma said in the reply.
The two parties should also make efforts to consolidate peace across the Taiwan Strait, restore regional stability, and push forward cross-Strait development and prosperity, Ma said.
Ma Ying-jeou was elected KMT chairman Sunday in a landslide victory, taking 93.87 percent of party votes.
Ma won Taiwan's leadership election in March last year and was inaugurated in May 2008. He had previously served as chairman of the KMT from July 2005 to February 2007.

Here are some food for thought, Why would China launch an attack on Taiwan when Taiwan will probably become another Chinese province 10 to 15 years down the road. The last thing you have to worry are about both side getting into a war. There are other things at play here which you should be much more concerned such as Taiwan being too dependent on Mainland's investment to expand its economy.

Isn't China one of the worlds superpowers? This whole thing is like beef between a super huge buff gangster guy and a super short skinny nerdy guy. The big buff guy being china, and wanting taiwan to be its friend.

Agreed, but why the fuck does China still need 900+ missiles pointed at the island then?
I don't even know why I bother replying to these threads.
Most of the time people are just joining 'fuck tw' bandwagon without even knowing half of the facts nor have they at least attempting to see it through the two different POVs.
That's gonna help the economy. Taiwan separatists should shove their egos up their ass.
Yeah, let's just bend over and give into the black-hearted society where trust was thrown out the window many centuries ago.
You're CHINESE not Taiwanese
Oh noes, I needed someone on Revscene to inform me of my background irregardless of having ancestry of more than 20-30 generations on the island.

culturally, and nationally Taiwanese, but blood and genetics, chinese.
i find taiwanese nationalists often get ethnicity and nationality mixed up, and so do most people that debate in this topic.
btw, i'm taiwanese, but i acknowledge that i'm of chinese decent, and blood.
PEOPLE
Taiwan has a population of 23 million. More than 18 million, the "native" Taiwanese, are descendants of Chinese who migrated from Fujian and Guangdong Provinces on the mainland, primarily in the 18th and 19th centuries. The "mainlanders," who arrived in Taiwan after 1945, came from all parts of mainland China. About half a million indigenous peoples inhabit the mountainous central and eastern parts of the island and are believed to be of Malayo-Polynesian origin. Of Taiwan's total population, approximately one million, or 4.4%, currently reside in mainland China.
HISTORY
Taiwan's indigenous peoples, who originated in Austronesia and southern Asia, have lived on Taiwan for 12,000 to 15,000 years. Significant migration to Taiwan from the Chinese mainland began as early as A.D. 500.

Like I've previously said in your old threads, I don't deny that once my ancestors are from China.
Some just prefer being recognized by their nationality.
When Korea was detracted from China, were you still calling them Chinese? No. Yet many of them have the same blood and genes as those in Northern China.

I assume there are Taiwanese people who have mixed indigenous and Chinese blood? Sometimes when I meet a Taiwanese person, they look a bit
"native" with traits such as dark skin or have different facial traits from a traditional "Chinese looking" person.

I assume there are Taiwanese people who have mixed indigenous and Chinese blood? Sometimes when I meet a Taiwanese person, they look a bit
"native" with traits such as dark skin or have different facial traits from a traditional "Chinese looking" person. You're thinking of the Han people, which make up a big chunk of what we consider Mainlander Chinese.
Most people from Taiwan came from Fujian (ie SE China), which is why they look somewhat different from, say, someone in Beijing (the "stereotypical" Han). Of course, mixing with the aboriginals is going to make them look even more different. I'm not sure if the whole Dutch conquest back in tha day resulted in Euro-blood getting into the TW bloodline as well.
The whole "Is TW part of China" question is quite interesting. I've been yelled at (while in TW) for suggesting TW is not part of China, and also yelled at for suggesting otherwise. It totally depends on who you ask. Meanwhile, pretty much every Mainlander (ie China) out there asks will murder you on the spot if you suggest that TW is NOT part of China. The best is if you have TW/CN couple friends, and you ask both of them at the same time if TW is part of China. :lol
Oh wellz, as long as they keep making cheap mobos and RAM sticks and cranking out Taichung JB, why do we all care. :D

Let's flip this situation a little bit so other people can understand why it's so confusing:
"What are you?"
"I'm Canadian"
"No you're not, you're Chinese"
Ethnically you can be Chinese but your nationality could be Canadian. You need to be a bit more specific when you ask someone "what are you?"
I don't think I've met anyone who's ever claimed that they were ethnically Taiwanese.
Taiwan should do a "I am Taiwanese" ad campaign for their beer like the "I am Canadian" ones they have here, I'd love to see the stereotypical traits people think Taiwanese people have.
maybe triumph can go to taiwan

I assume there are Taiwanese people who have mixed indigenous and Chinese blood? Sometimes when I meet a Taiwanese person, they look a bit
"native" with traits such as dark skin or have different facial traits from a traditional "Chinese looking" person. Not so much since many of the aboriginals are isolated in the mountains (kinda like reserves here but not really)
I'm not sure if the whole Dutch conquest back in tha day resulted in Euro-blood getting into the TW bloodline as well.
Oh wellz, as long as they keep making cheap mobos and RAM sticks and cranking out Taichung JB, why do we all care. :DHmm Dutch, that's an interesting one. Im sure it happened but it was many many centuries ago it probably doesn't have any effect now.
Unfortunately a lot of the semiconductor management moved their plants to China, but the JB are still there :lol
Most of people in Taiwan were immigrants from mainland China, idealy.. we are from the same country..Taiwan Rebulic of China

Wait, wut?
So since Vancouver has like 40% of its population of Chinese and Indian decsent..Vancouver is technically China and India as well? How insightful.
Two totally different political ideology + financial structure and still equating to one nation? My brain cells are dying from reading that.
Taiwan should do a "I am Taiwanese" ad campaign for their beer like the "I am Canadian" ones they have here, I'd love to see the stereotypical traits people think Taiwanese people have.
It's a nice idea, but you'll just get Beijing threatening the island "flexing those guns" in front of other world superpowers for TW independence campaigns...
edit: oh and, comparing Quebec/Tibet or whatever to Taiwan doesn't work well.
Quebec in the 17th century had the chance to fight for their name but they lost the war. They've been bitter since but the English still let their language be one of our two official langauges. They are not self-sufficient financially..I remember Bloc Quebecois said if they gained independence they would still need financial support from Canada for 15 more years or sthing. The biggest difference is that Canada had a referendum for their independence not once but twice. Taiwan on the other hand has been self-sufficient financially for the past 70 years. Physically it's an island so isolation is better achieved than cmopared to quebec.
Did taiwan ever get to fight for its name? Nope. Would China ever openly give a referendum for the self-determination of the island? Hell fucking noes. The minute the govt in TW tries to put one up the Red Army will be implementing an assault.
