‘Critical Mass’ bike ride expected to snarl downtown traffic Friday

For fuck sakes.....
VANCOUVER — Police took the unusual step this week of warning motorists away from the city’s downtown core Friday in an effort to ease tensions generated by a planned “Critical Mass” bike ride.
The ride — which takes place on the last Friday of every month — is expected to draw a record crowd of up to 3,000 cycling enthusiasts, and police say drivers are better off avoiding the area if possible.
Police say the ride has grown so large they have given up trying to rein in participants, even those breaking rules, such as riding without a helmet or blocking traffic.
“The fact of the matter is that Critical Mass has reached a critical mass of civil disobedience,” said Vancouver police Insp. Rick McKenna.
Strict enforcement of the Motor Vehicle Act or city bylaws would “lead to greater confrontations, escalated incidents of violence and further polarity between drivers and riders. None of us wants that,” he said.
Instead, McKenna said, police concentrate on targeting individuals who commit more serious criminal acts.
Last month, a driver was arrested for assault after an “exchange of words” with a cyclist involved in the Critical Mass ride erupted into violence. The incident resulted in an injury to the cyclist.
McKenna said police are concerned similar conflict could flare up again this month.
While the ride was originally designed as a protest over the lack of bike lanes, “Critical Mass has now morphed into a major celebration. Unfortunately, it has also morphed into a source of major conflict between riders and drivers,” he said.
Because of that, he said, “we are reminding motorists that this Friday evening they should try to avoid the city core if at all possible.”
But police say riders, too, can be a problem, with some cyclists engaging in mischief and tactics that exacerbate conflict with drivers.
“Riders routinely block intersections to allow bicycles to move through red lights and occupy oncoming lanes,” McKenna said.
Drinking alcohol or smoking marijuana — behaviours police have cited in the past as problems — while cycling only makes things worse, he said.
McKenna said officers will be out Friday on bicycles and motorcycles to monitor the ride and keep the peace as best they can, but asked for tolerance and cool heads on both sides of the road.
“Friday night promises to be a hot summer night. We respectfully urge all of the riders and any motorists who must be in the downtown core to do their bit to lower the temperature,” he said.
Vancouver cycling advocate Arno Schortinghuis said he welcomes police presence during the Critical Mass rides.
Safety and fun are primary considerations for the vast majority of participants, many of whom bring their children along.
“It’s a real kind of celebration atmosphere,” he said.
As for the drivers who may feel inconvenienced by the ride, Schortinghuis feels some sympathy.
“But, on the other hand, motorists rule the road for the whole month,” he said.
Though the bike route has not been made public, the Critical Mass ride traditionally sets out from the Vancouver Art Gallery around 5 p.m. Traffic may be disrupted over the Burrard, Granville or Lions Gate bridges.

I say everybody switch roles. driver -> biker, biker -> driver. Once everybody has a better understanding of what each faces...then you won't need critical mass anymore.

we should join in the critical mass group and start smoking weed among all the riders. This will help make the public think critical mass are a bunch of marijuana smoking hippies that do drugs and are up to no good. (and hopefully stop the retarded parents from bringing their young children to these events without helmets)

+1 for an awesome idea.. they can go screw themselves honestly motorists get tickets etc for disobeying speed laws etc and general road laws..why do cyclists get to get away with this just because theres a lot of them..to me its almost like a clear act of unlawful gathering just like with car enthusiasts or bike groups at a local gas station or something..unless you have official papers they should get just as harrassed by police as any one else ..just cause theres a lot of them doesn't mean police shouldn't hand out tickets etc...if hats the case then we could all just walk down the city streets and all sit down at some random intersection and say oh we feel bad that the lights in the city are on at night and killing birds who fly into the buildings so none of you get to go home in other words retarded shit like that

lol not if you throw it like a major league pitcher. :haha:
Just get out of your cars, stand next to it and block the lanes if you're stuck. You'll be a pedestrian then and those cyclists riding in btwn cars will have to yield to you. Apparently, thats what my brother did and others got out their cars too. Someone should start up a walk/march that runs through their bike route.
Police say the ride has grown so large they have given up trying to rein in participants, even those breaking rules, such as riding without a helmet or blocking traffic.
This is stupid. So we can break the law when we have a lot of people doing it?

so if we get say... a big group or gangs to beat up some bystanders the police won't arrest us coz we are too big in numbers?
Time to start a RS robbery group! We can to go store to store and rub them clean and the police won't do a thing about it since we have too many robberies at once for them to handle.
Is very simple. When a protest gets too big and it out of control or beyond the control of the police you simply shut it down.

Than game on? self defence? fucking gay
fucking hell, drove on robson 2 months ago this mofo decides to zig zag thru traffic , and decides to ride dangerously in between two cars swirls in and out and nearly knocked out my side mirror. I gave him a honk, he turns around and gave me a finger, i obviously yelled at him. Than he attempted to spit on my car and missed. I was in my suit and my dressing shoes while my gf was sitting beside me since we were heading down to C restaurant to celebrate her bday. So he did a u-turns in the front of the intersection and stopped beside my window, i told him it was fucking dangerous for what he did back there. He mummbled some bullshit and gave me a cocky attitude as if ohhh dont worry i can take care myself or some shit like that. Fuck if i wasnt in my suit that day i really wonna rip an new asshole in this guys cocky ass face. I know what he may attempt to do tho, slam his bike or damage my car and run. which is what im afraid of a cyclist to do, bevause its hard to have evidence as well as they have no license plate. Otherwise i really wonna beat the shit out of him.
Fucking hell, cyclist deserves to die...no i dont care what anyone says. Fuck them. Ride a motorcycle or get the fuck out of my way.
This morning coming to work, a fucking cyclist decides to hog up the entire lane riding 15km. Fuck him, ripped thru blowing his ear drum at 8500rpm in 2nd and ended at that.
:)
just who they think they are? the fucking cyclists are riding no more than 20km, what makes them think they have the right to ride one lane and slow everyone down? should scooters (manual one that u run on ur foot), roller bladers, skateboarders all join their cruise and hog up the entire 2 or 3 lanes on the street?

Until bicycles are no longer considered "vehicles" under the law, they have the right to be on the road. It's not easy building dedicated bike paths, but the municipalities are getting there.
However, with that said, I think police should do more to enforce the rules of the road for cyclists. When I see cyclists zip in and out of lanes, they are really taking their lives into their own hands.

Instead of suggesting total BS solutions, and stuff that will never happen, call your local MP and demand to know why your local police department is allowing and seemingly supporting the breaking of the road laws in your area. Then call the Vancouver Police department (not 911 you dumbasses) and let them know you will be in the downtown core on Friday afternoon and would like to know what the police will be doing to those cyclists who are endangering the Public as well as running posted traffic lights and signals.
After that, if you really want to do something, get as many motorists together as you can, and follow the critical mass ride. Be prepared for a very long afternoon, but be on your Horn the WHOLE DAMN TIME. Call it “Critical mass Auto edition” and claim you are protesting the fact that you are putting out more emissions thanks to cyclists blocking the downtown core.
I’m all for more bikes downtown and less cars, unfortunately critical mass simply makes drivers pissed off, and dose nothing to help promote change. Critical mass needs to be stopped before someone gets hurt directly or indirectly because of it.

I'm not a cyclist myself, but at least I can understand the intent (though I don't necessary agree with the means) of Critical Mass. The original intent of Critical Mass was to generate awareness about cyclists on the roads. I think its mission has been accomplished - at least people are talking about it.
Cyclists are treated as motor vehicles under the law and their rights to be on the road should be respected. To all those crying that they should be insured, etc., well instead of complaining about it, maybe you should talk to your local MLA and get the motor vehicle act changed. Would you rather have cyclists riding on the sidewalk? I personally would rather have cylists on the road. If every cyclist now switched to cars, the roads would be worse (well, we all own stock in GM and Chrysler so I suppose we should encourage car ownership to get our tax dollars back.)
As for the police, well it's rather hard to arrest thousands of cyclists, just like it's hard to arrest the hundreds who gather in front of the Art Gallery on 4/20.

Cyclists are treated as motor vehicles under the law and their rights to be on the road should be respected.
Just as they should be respecting the laws of the road, the same as any other motor vehicle on the road. Which a lot of the time, especially during critical mass, they do not.
Rights and duties of operator of cycle
183 (1) In addition to the duties imposed by this section, a person operating a cycle on a highway has the same rights and duties as a driver of a vehicle.
(2) A person operating a cycle
(a) must not ride on a sidewalk unless authorized by a bylaw made under section 124 or unless otherwise directed by a sign,
---> (c) must, subject to paragraph (a), ride as near as practicable to the right side of the highway, <---
(3) Nothing in subsection (2) (c) requires a person to ride a cycle on any part of a highway that is not paved.
A lot of the cyclists see the "RIGHTS" part but completely ignore the "DUTIES" part
Mugen EvOlutioN
07-30-2009, 03:24 PM
you know what these dumbass cyclists will be 1000 times safer riding on the sidewalk
there is more room to ride on the sidewalk than fucking riding on the road
ROAD are for cars, not for fucking pedestrians or runners, or in this case the FUKING CYCLISTS
how many people walks on sidewalk vs how many cars are actually driving on the road? the ratio will be it is less chance of a dumbass cyclist to run into a pedestrian (which cant cause death) vs a dumb shit cyclist getting run over by a truck (and die )

I've said it before and i'll say it again, just wait until someone's child or parent is in some hospitals emergency ward about to die and its sibling can't get their to say gooodbye because some bikers are breaking the law. Its this fucking scenario that pisses me off so much about these bikers.
similar situation happen last time, i read on another forum, a wife who is dying of cancer and was on her death bed, and the husband, was stuck in traffic cause by these fuckers and couldn't make it to say good bye, they were married for 30+ years.

People are talking about it in a negative way, though. They're bringing up negative publicity. I was listening to the radio earlier today on my way home and 80% of the people voting on TEAM1040 thought they should be arrested. I don't know if he said it on the radio but I was talking on Twitter to Buzz Bishop and we agreed that they're a bunch of moronic fucks. The vast majority of the 604 is not behind their idiotic way of doing things.
People are not going to bike in this city. Shit is too far away and biking is inconvenient, especially if you have a family or a job that is any more than throwing distance from where you live.

Jesus... Reading the quotes and comments in the articles related to Critical Mass makes me think all that fresh air the cyclists are breathing is damaging their brain... or it could be from breathing in all the exhaust fumes? Source of these quotes from: http://www.theprovince.com/news/vancouver/Critical+Mass+riders+fear+safety/1848181/story.html
"When I ride downtown to work everyday by myself, and I'm cut off by cars, I'm honked at . . . It's terrifying," she said. "And as soon as I join Critical Mass on the last Friday of every month, I feel safe."
YOU'RE NOT FUCKING RIDING TO WORK IN CRITICAL MASS!!! DON'T YOU FUCKING USE 'FEELING SAFE' AS AN EXCUSE TO JOIN CRITICAL MASS. YOU ARE A DOUCHEBAG AND YOU KNOW IT, SO DON'T MAKE IDIOT EXCUSES. IF YOU TRULY WANT TO BIKE SAFELY, GO TO THE FUCKING SEAWALL YOU DUMB BITCH.
"You're promoting hatred towards cyclists . . . The cars are dominating the roadways for 30 days of the month. Why can't they allow the cyclists to use the roadways for two hours?"
BECAUSE THE ROADWAYS ARE FOR FUCKING CARS YOU GODDAMN IMBECILE!!! HOW THE FUCK ARE YOU MAKING ANY SENSE?!?!?! WOULD YOU LIKE IT IF EVERYBODY DROVE ON THE FUCKING BIKE LANES?!?! AND SECONDLY, HOW THE FUCK DOES PISSING EVERYBODY OFF PROMOTE LESS HATE TOWARDS CYCLISTS YOU FUCKING PRETENTIOUS HIPPIE MOUTH-BREATHER?!?!

Ok lets get this straight, cyclists aren't all fucking hippies. I commute by bike, it's a great way to get excersize and keep the car at home on these fucking awesome days!
While most of you are stuck in traffic, a biker is still peddling away. Driving in Vancouver doesn't save you all that much time unless you're hitting the highway. During high peak traffic times, I bet a good rider can make it from richmond to downtown at about the same time if not maybe 15minutes late.
I don't upright think having this once a month is such a great idea because once I coudln't even get downtown because of these guys, but don't hate on all bikers. You won't know unless you grab a bike and ride it in and out of downtown but most of the biking routes are kept off any major streets.
Vancouver isn't the most ideal place to ride because of all the hills, but if your work has showers and you hate sitting in traffic, pick up a bike and try riding to work. You'll find it a pretty rewarding experiance!

Mananetwork has summed it up perfectly. Several people at my office bike to work and they don't exactly live within a throwing stone of the downtown core either. People in my office aren't exactly hippies - unless you think that people who consume Starbucks, are white, drink beer, wear brand name clothing, and have families are somehow hippies.
Every time a thread comes up about Critical Mass, we have a bunch of people who think that cycling is somehow part of the counter-culture, or akin to being a "hippie." Most of you throw around the term "hippie" without even knowing what it means. Most cyclists aren't hippies who live on the Drive, eat vegan, have their own gardens, etc. I suppose if being a 'hippie' means getting some exercise on the way to work/running errands and enjoying the outdoors, well I don't know what to say...
I think cyclists who disobey the rules of the road should be fined just like drivers. However, for every cyclist who disobeys the rules, there are 5 law-abiding cyclists who wear reflective gear, helmets, use hand signals, and stay in bike lanes. Just as cyclists should be taught the rules of the road, drivers should watch for cylists.
^you're not even talking about critical mass anymore. nobody here has a problem with cyclists, we have a problem with critical mass. every time they ride it ends up in violence and disrespect between drivers and riders... it really accomplishes nothing.

I know I'm taking this thread off-topic, but judging from the responses in this thread and other threads, we still have a long way to go before people become open about cycling. When I see people throw around the term hippie without substantiating it, it touches a raw nerve I guess.
I don't agree with the methods Critical Mass employs, but I can understand the message.

you know why we pissed off? Because most of them does not get FINED ! If they are insured and have plate on their bike maybe I wont be so pissed ? At least I can track him down with an enforcer if a cyclist breaks the rule of riding on road.
That is why cylists should not be on the streets with its own lanes in the first place. You gave them one, they will want more.
are you sure you understand the message Critial mass trying to deliver? They called it celebration now because finally they have their own lanes, great.. BUT Why the fuck are these people celerate once every month ?
You dont see 4/20 celebrate on the 20th of every months? You dont see celebration of light shooting firework once every month..
It was a protest before, now they have the lanes, they want 1 step further to do something stupid. Most of the people have mentality in their head that it is fun when you were told not to do something, in this situation "breaking the rules".. I bet majority of them not riding for the protest sake, they ride their bike because they can break the rule and make a scene of it. The good part is "THEY WONT BE FINED NOR THORWN IN JAIL"...... This is also the impression Mananetwork is giving me by stating taking the whole road seems cool !!!

Fucking cyclists breaks more traffic law than me getting VIs and speeding tickets in on year. I speed say once a week, everyday i drive i see AT LEAST fucking 2 cyclists riding like a fucking moron. And guess what? I drove to my other building today within 2 blocks i saw a _____ (fill in the blank) yes a FUCKING CYCLIST running redlight without stopping. Mob rule, the basis of democracy. The mob this time is the cyclists.
Is it really worth the time to have every officer in the lower mainland converge on the Critical Mass cyclists for fucking helmet tickets and bullshit? Most people even know where and when it's happening.
If there was an anti-mob and serious problems started:
1. You'd all be a bunch of dicks (but that's nothing new)
2. The event would be forced to become a real parade/event backed by the city, or perish
So far, it doesn't seem like enough people really want to do anything about it. And seeing as it's an infrequent inconvenience I don't really see that changing.

no, most cyclists aren't, but most people attending critical mass, are. that is what this thread is about.

If those were the people that attended critical mass, this thread wouldn't exist. The people attending are not the good, law abiding cyclists that wear safety gear, signal properly, use the correct lanes and follow the rules of the road. These are the carrot-up-the-ass clowns who think being on a two wheeled, 1 person-power machine makes them gods.
Since the police "can't arrest everyone" etc, can't they call in the riot squad or something? Hose these fuckers down and peg them with some rubber bullets, tasers, pepper bags, etc?

Yup, as much as I hate sitting in traffic, I enjoy sitting in comfort with the AC/heater going than biking. I live in south van, I can't bike to work in north van, not to mention my company has sites in Delta and as far as Victoria. I have to be able to go to these sites right away and sometimes I bring computers. I'm not biking from north van to Delta with a 150lbs server strapped to my back.

yeah I think those people pushing for others to bike to work should really think about the situation from other people's POV. Who wants to bike to work and get all sweaty before your day even starts? What if it rains? What if it's burning hot like these last few weeks?
I'd MUCH rather ride in a car with a heater/AC.
last month i was stuck in traffic because of this event i was on my motorcycle with a couple buddies and i was in front of the traffic jam, wats mest up if u guys didnt hear before there was a guy in a mercedes or bmw was so pissed of drove his brand new car over the sidewalk to pass the intersection, the fucked up thing the stupid cyclist( i think 3 or 4 of them) started mocking him and syain shit while he was in teh sidewalk and some shit happened i think he got charged for some assualt. (driver of the car)
wtf man i know he's pissed and all, but at that point he shoulda just sucked it up instead of going onto the sidewalk.

one guy on the Dubberz forum actually called the VPD public relations office and asked them what other laws they wouldn't be enforcing this evening... also asked for an escort on said crime spree since they were helping out the massholes... It would have been funny had he actually recorded the call... :haha:

Yup, as much as I hate sitting in traffic, I enjoy sitting in comfort with the AC/heater going than biking. I live in south van, I can't bike to work in north van, not to mention my company has sites in Delta and as far as Victoria. I have to be able to go to these sites right away and sometimes I bring computers. I'm not biking from north van to Delta with a 150lbs server strapped to my back.

no, most cyclists aren't, but most people attending critical mass, are. that is what this thread is about.
Since the police "can't arrest everyone" etc, can't they call in the riot squad or something? Hose these fuckers down and peg them with some rubber bullets, tasers, pepper bags, etc?

Gregor Robertson, the chairman of the Vancouver Police Board, is a fucking hippy.
Pedal-friendly Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson is speaking out against the traffic-snarling bike protest scheduled for Friday.
Robertson is well known bike advocate but says he won't be biking with the Critical Mass ride, "I don't support it in its current form right now. I want to see change, I want to see the ride be a celebration and really be responsible to the community as well."

Stay out of the downtown core every last Friday of the month and get more of a hate on for cyclists? Eventually they'll piss enough people off where either a) The mayor will get turfed and something will be done by the new mayor. b) Some citizen (probably nobody on this site) will take the law into his hands, seriously hurt or kill a cyclist or two and something will be done.
Shit like this has a way of sorting itself out.

They interviewed a bunch of massholes on the news, most of them just said it was "fun" to participate in this garbage.
Also, the VPD was said to had actually tried arranging a meeting with the organizers of the CM. They asked for information like their route so the city could basically accommodate them and motorists could be pre-warned to avoid the area. The CM organizers refused the meeting.

But they apply to people who work in a professional environment and can't work with helmet hair, in a soaked suit, while reeking of sweat. If you work at the bottle depot or something then maybe.

many of them are breaking several laws, riding without a helmet, blowing red lights, obstructing traffic, verbally abusing drivers, etc. So I can do all of these on a normal day and not get arrested? cool.

non-sissy really? What a ridiculous thing to say...
as for the reasons not being good. How are they not good? They apply to almost everyone who isn't biking to work. It's not about being a sissy, it's about what's convenient and what's practical. Perhaps you could tell me what would be good reasons? Or would you say there's NO good reason and that everyone should be able to substitute driving with biking and have no problems?
maybe you don't care what you look like at work, but a lot of people have jobs that require them to dress/look a certain way.
also, I can list off dozens of reasons why one wouldn't want to bike to work, but what's the point in doing that. I figure you'd see what I was getting at (regards to inconvenience, impracticality, dress code at work, looking professional at work without stinking of sweat etc.) and there'd be no need to go on about it.

How is this not a good reason? Not everyone does physical labor work.

I don't get it, why wouldn't the police keeps on ticketing these people?
Yes, they can't ticket everyone, but they can hand out as much ticket as they could. It will be like a "all you can ticket" feast.
Put 30 cops there, and start giving tickets to these riders non-stop. Each cop can probably hand out one ticket every 5-10mins, and each ticket being $50-$100, each cop can help the city bring in approx. $600/hr revenue
When a group of 30 cars are caught racing on the street, the cops can't pull over all of them too, but it will still pull over and ticket as many as he or she could instead of letting them all go. Why should it be different for the cyclist?

^ Because there are more hippies than streetracers in this city, and they want to stay elected.
I admit, if my buddies and I were to join CM, I'd really be doing it as "something to do" and to make some noise and yell at random people for fun. :D Personally I couldn't care less about increasing awareness about bicycles (imo the city's already done a good enough job with all those bike paths crisscrossing the city), and I'm sure a sizeable chunk of the crowd are only there to make a scene.
If they criminalized CM, watch 80% of the crowds disappear.

I wouldn't maybe use the word sissy though, but definitely very lazy! don't want to generalize and say we should all bike because some individuals just cannot work without a car. But if you're giving us a bs excuse like; it's easier, just more covient, its too hot outside, I need ac, don't feel like getting an extra 30 minutes before work. It's too expensive to live in a 5 bedroom 3 bathroom house downtown? So people live in Langley and work downtown. The 'hippies' don't think it's fair that they have to breathe your fumes every day so you can maintain your fancy lifestyle by working your nice job downtown and living 50kms away.

Boo fucking hoo- Cry me a river won't you. Freaking people have so much time to complain about anything and everything.
Honestly, who the fuck cares what "fair" is. Being "fair" cripples societal advancements.
Look at fucking bums and chugs. Hippies think it's "fair" that hard-working people get taxed like no tomorrow so they can give these people free money to be fucking lazy bastards. If it were up to me, I'd send these bums to asia where they can experience what hell truly is.
What these Critical Mass participants are doing isn't to improve biking conditions in downtown- they're just using that as an excuse to break the law without getting repercussions. If they wanted to actually improve biking conditions, there's about 10,000 other ways to go about it w/o the need to piss other people off. Critical Manners will probably accomplish this goal more effectively than Critical Mass bastards will ever dream of.
What's sad is the government is allowing this under the pretense that "oh- there's no one to arrest coz we don't know who's organizing it."
So in short, in Vancouver, a huge group of people can break the law as long as the organizer cannot be traced. Fucking great.
These bastards need to be piked down like Arcadian soldiers. Let there be a Critical Massacre.

The problem with retaliating against these fuckers is that there aren't enough people actually dedicated to stopping them. I mean hippies are always dedicated to a particular cause but norms always have other more important shit to do. As much as i'd love to set up a defensive line of people armed with water balloons, rocks, and airsoft guns near a major bottlenecked area, it won't happen.
Or CAN one person stop an army? An army of bicycle riders.
Edit* Anyone planning on doing this, aim for their shins. You can't peddle without your shins.

They made huge commotion yelling and screaming to voice their presence.
Off the top of my head, had over 100 cyclists and few skateboarders and then nearing the end 1 police officer on bike and another in cruiser.
Complete madness from drivers as they all sat there and couldnt go anywhere... Some were yelling at cyclists.

Its also a protest and the fact that its get drivers so pissed off has made their protest a success. Just ignore them and let them be on their way. Accept the fact that the last friday of every month there will be hippies on the road in the afternoon and don't pay attention to their screaming. Is a protest really a protest is nobody is paying any attention to the cause?

If they had it their way no one would own car and we would all ride bikes. They inconvenience the people in CARS on purpose, hence why they shut down roadways.

How about all the "One Less Car" bullshit stickers and signs they are holding? How about when everyone stops and raises their bike over their head and cheers?
You think they are just "riding their bikes in group for fun"?
Critical Massers, like the event itself, are highly unorganized sheep in large groups. All it takes is one person starting a chant and they'll follow. But then they'll also just disperse at the end and forget about what's going on until the next month.
If it weren't for Gregor, nothing would have happened with any of the bike lanes, 'cause they're a bunch of pro-commune hippies who would happily see the Corporate Domination Of The World (tm) brought down and everyone return to their bicycling agrarian roots.

The people you are talking about represent 1% of the entire group.
Go talk to the majority of people who participate in critical mass, the VAST MAJORITY are just sheep herd who follow the mass for fun, they don't really care much about more bike less car
If they really do, they'd protest in front of the city hall and their local MP, which will be much more effective at promoting their "cause" instead of riding in group like a riot
