India mulls late-night TV as population control

http://www.dawn.com/wps/wcm/connect/...-control-qs-01

Quote:
NEW DELHI: India's health minister believes late night TV makes for good birth control. Family planning experts fear he has simply run out of ideas for curbing India's potentially catastrophic population growth.

Since independence in 1947, the population has tripled to nearly 1.2 billion and now grows by 18 million every year.

India is expected to surpass China as the world's most populous nation by 2028 and the population is predicted to top 1.5 billion by 2050.
Canada population is like 33mil....India only takes 2 years to get there.

My brown friend and Russell Peters would be proud.

Seriously though, that's the problem with exponential growth. The easiest way to be honest is to pull a 1-child policy (ie exponential population decrease) like in China..

2 things:

1) Forcing people to only have 1 kid isn't what's messing things up, as the odds stay the same. People killing newborn daughters is the problem. Blame the people's messed up beliefs, not the policy itself.

And you know what? 2) Too many males, not enough females = more population control. Though as a male I must say this sucks for us.

Yeah but it's one of those cases that you're damned if you do, you're damned if you don't.

At least they're in the proper direction of acknowleging that overpopulation is a critical concern where steps towards solving it needs to be taken.

but the reason they are killing newborn daughters is the result of the one child policy
im not sure the statistics, buts lets say 75% of chinas population are farmers...a male is more likely to contribute more in terms of labor and thus male children are seen as more "desireable," thus the 1 child they have would rather be male

Well, not only that. I'm sure a lot of the families want a male child to pass on their lineage.

aren't people in rural areas of china (i.e. farmers) exempt from the 1 child policy?

people in rural area's are allowed to have 2 children in China and most people have abortions when they find out they are having a girl.
