I believe it's Fraser and Kingsway.

I think Au Petit is over hyped.

Pho Asia in richmond used to make a really good one but they moved and their subs no longer taste as good

Bali on fraser and Chong Lee Market on Rupert are always two favourites =)

i will have to say that BA LE subs tastes like shit, and there is no filling whatsoever.

Ba Le is not that great value. You can get a footlong banh mi at Dong Khanh for $2.75 on Kingsway and they bake the baguettes in house, or go 2 doors over at Kingsway Deli for the same thing.

lol i eat the Chong Lee viet sub a lot...$2.75 beats subway across the street anyday

But it's a hit or miss...sometimes they sell out by 130pm..sometimes the person is on break -.-

Do you guys like the duck liver paste? I personally think it's disgusting..but it does add an intersting taste. I always ask for them not to put that in.

PATE is the fucking BOMB! I buy that shit everytime I'm in Vancouver and spread it on some toasted French Bread :D Fuck yeah!

For Viet Subs, I would have to say Au Petit Cafe. However, it's a lot more expensive then other places(I think). Theirs a lot of hype about it and maybe I've bought into it, since I think they make some pretty damn good subs, compared to other viet places.

Bonka
08-07-2009, 10:01 PM
I noticed that every place for banh mi I've been to, they're made slightly different, then again I couldn't tell you what's authentic or not.

Green Lemongrass on Westminster packs a lot of meat into theirs and is accordingly more expensive, though in my mind banh mi isn't necessarily about an ample filling.

Okay, so I tried the Viet sub at Tung Hing Dong Khanh on Kingsway. Here is my overall review:

1. They bake their own bread - French baguette style
2. The deli meats they use are of good quality. It's actual meat, not super processed.
3. The jalapenos they use are striking hot unlike other places where they de-seed the jalapenos.
4. The sub itself is quite huge.
5. I'm not chugging down a litre of water thanks to MSG.

Verdict - for $2.75, it's actually pretty good and I favour the style of sub compared to the famous "Mr. Baguette" in SoCal. Overall, pretty filling and satisfying. Downside to all of this is the parking. It sucks. You can park in their lot or on the street but finding parking is a PITA. I would not go out of my way to go there for the life of me. Growing up in Chinatown, my family went to Ba Le on Main for Viet subs so in comparison, they're very different styles in my opinion. I prefer a good French baguette over a smaller loaf of bread and MSG induced deli meats.

Bonka - awesome suggestion. You sir, are a man who knows true, good food.

Agreed. Once my mom brought one home and when I opened it there was nothing but cucumber, carrot/radish and cilantro, no lie. I was like wtf and my mom actually drove back (about 5 minutes) to get it remade. Turns out the person who was making it wasn't even paying attention (guess my mother wasn't either).

I go to a place called Nha Trang for my vietsubs. Always order Chicken or Pork ones, so bored of dac biet.

Nice place I dropped my wallet one time at the restaurant and they called me (I left my number in there). When I went to go retrieve it, checked and all my money was in there so I tried to reward the person who found it, but she refused to take it. So next time I went I made sure the girl who found it served me, and left a $30 tip on a $5.98 order lol

In my opinion the best banh mi "baguette" I've found in the city. They also sell the full length baguettes for $2.75.

There are a couple of places I'd say would have a better filling like the sublet space (?) inside Golden Garden on Main St. in Chinatown, but the bread makes the sandwich and those other joints use inferior bread.

This!

Tung Hing has been skimping on the marinade for the vegetables, the inconsistency is hogwash. I'll buy a load of bread though, granted, I hate that they leave it on the counter.

And Ba Le, I was choked when they raised it to 3.50 from 3 recently. Alas, on par with other Viet places I guess.

Depends..

While most places probably get their meat from Kim Chau, the important things such as the pate and pickled veggies I'd imagine they make themselves. Not to mention finding the right kind of bread.

I don't know how is it possible for this place to be mention. Its over priced baguette and meat are small portion sized but I can understand its in yaletown where theirs no other viet subs around

I prefer the roast pork from first and renfrew upstairs from tnt. The viet subs from Chong lee are good if your planning on grabbing subs their you have to get a meatball sub and a special on the side. Eat dat meatball sub right when it's nice and hot.

The one on 1st and Renfrew is a freezer store, iirc. The subs at the one at Rupert and 22nd are mehhhh, bread isn't nearly as good as the ones that are fresh baked in house, and they microwave their meat for the meatball sub.

Definitely Tung Hing.
If you get there just as the bread is leaving the oven, the bread pretty much melts in your mouth.
It's amazing.

Easily one of top eats in the city. They can charge me whatever they want and I will stay pay through the teeth to get it from them.

And yes, I think they are better than Bale and Au Petite.
While those places are also good, they bread just doesn't quite measure up.

Sometimes, I'll ride out from Burnaby, grab a sub and just sit on the parking lot curb and nom-noms away. So good.

You've had one recently?

No offense but you sort of lost some credibility from me on all these awesome pictures of food you've made lol.

Tung Hing isn't even worth a mention/recommendation in my books these days. Granted, I've only tried subs from the 24hr pho across Mcdonalds, Tung Hing, Kim Chau, and Ba Le, and various other Viet restaurants. But Ba Le is definitely the most consistent/good, I've found.

Culverin
04-19-2013, 02:26 AM
Not recently. 3 months back maybe?

I have been to Bale a couple times, never been blown away by the bread.
To me, the bread its what makes it.

My grandma made do chua, the daikon/carrot pickles, I grew up on that stuff.
I like that it's a good ratio at Tung Hing, so maybe it's the taste of nostalgia giving me a biased judgement.

I think it taste much better when you heat up the bread in the oven. I find the meat has more flavor when it's warm(er); possibly from the juices.

It's not "cold" when you get it. The bread will be room temp at worst and the meat warm.
If you're lucky. The bread will still be fresh.

Don't wait until you get home.
Wolf it down on the spot. By the time I step foot out the door, it's already out of the bag and on it's way to my mouth. I'm just a tad impatient.

MOST OVERRATED FUCKIGN SUB I HAD IN MY LIFE.... garbage , just pure garbage

$5 gets me half of what I get @ Tung hing bakery for the same price.

buns break down easily and crispy crumbs everywhere!, tung hing is more fresh and doesn't break down. The bun size itself is like half of the size of tung hing. The bun can be compared to Ba le.

The meat is garbage, barely any inside!! Feels like a $2.50 viet sub, not a 5. Tung hing is like triple the meat if you order the 3 pork combo + 1 pork sausage for $5.00

Seriously do not think I can trust revscene reviews again. It taste bland, its smaller, the bun sucks, less meat

everything

Saigon sub is the best ones in Vancouver imo. The bread however can rip the shit out of inside your mouth after eating it. Owned by the Vietnamese drink lady from night market Home Depot side.

Banh Mi Saigon kind of sucks. It's better than Tung hing but still disappointing.

I'd take Ba Le over Banh Mi Saigon. Now if any of you guys tried that Banh Mi Phuong in Hoi An, that's a effin killer sub. Just incredible flavour and bread.

Au Petite - I go there time to time, only for their Meatball sub though. That's it. I haven't tried their other subs so can't say if they are "shitty" as one person put it.

Tung Hing - Sucks, they changed their marinade in their pickled vegetables and it's just meh. From the chicken, sausage, to dac biet, mehhhhh. I do like their banana donut. :)

Kim Chau - Decent but nothing wow.

Damn. Good stuff. Yeah as others have posted, there's a bit more meat compared to Tung Hing. Got the Special $4.75. Will definitely go back.

Someone should just organize a Viet Sub Revscene meet/tour, drive from one to the other and try them all.

Finally had a chance to go to Banh Mi Saigon. Got a chicken sub, quick and tasty, less than $5 ... but how come it's not toasted and warmed up? Everything was cold including chicken. I love it when they use grilled lemon grass flavored chicken in their sub. Give it a 7.5/10. I was expecting it to be lightly toasted ... is traditional Viet sub not toasted?

Tried two places downtown, kinda stupid since I grew up and still live by Kingsway and Fraser but first I went to One Saigon and it was about the same as I get in the neighborhood but then Viet Sub by the library..... First it was 4.75 each and so I got $9.50 out to get two but then they asked for 9.81.

http://i0.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/original/000/018/489/nick-young-confused-face-300x256_nqlyaa.png

In the heat of the moment I thought maybe there's tax on top? Put my exact change back in my pocket like a dummy and gave him a 20. Never seen sub prices at such an odd number. I've eating these things since they were $2 and they always were in increments of quarters. Anyways still laughing at how my mind was obliterated by 31 cents lol

On to the actual sub, it was not good. I had a meatball one which has always been saucy everywhere else but here it was really dry. Same with the special, which was dry until the last 2 inches that had the fish sauce on it.

In that area I would stick with One Saigon
