Hey guys,

On the side I've been doing tech support via craigslist advertising. I've been charging $50 for showing up, and $25 an hour after two hours.

By referral, I was passed onto a guy that is looking to hire me for 25 hours a week at his business.

This job would be slightly more difficult than the sidework I am currently doing. As a result I'm not sure what hourly wage I should be working for.

1. Industry

This new job is in an industry that not all people are comfortable working in (porn).

2. Commute

This job is in Delta, a 30 minute commute from my home. I was planning on selling my car in the next month (for some extra cash because school for me is right along the Canada line).

As a result I will be stuck paying insurance, and gas for a different car.

3. I'm going to get taxed

My side job is tax free this job, however, will be taxed.




All that aside I want the job because it's during the day and the hours are flexible.

So the real question is, how much do people that work support usually make per hour? I've heard ranges up to $55 an hour, however I am realistically not going to be making that. I do not, however, want to be working for a lot less than I could.

However, I have no incentive to stay at my pay rate but to be saddled with more costs.

Any ideas what I should ask for? I'm thinking 27-28.

What qualifications/skills do junior techs have, I want to see how comparable I am to them.

Our Jr. Tech basically does all the retail stuff. IE. Diagnose computer issues and fix them...Server troubleshooting.... Basically the basics of computers with some additions... I would say a Jr. tech is basically one of those repair guys @ best buy... Anyone can do his job aslong as you know the ropes/experience...

Sometime when the Tier2 is too busy, we pass off work to the JR. Tech if possible...

Tier 2 is basically the CIO.. Any server and network issues he deals with... and runs the managed services...

That really depends on our JR. Techs experience... and thats our price for on-site. In house is $50

We have a 40Yr old JR. Tech that gets paid $30/HR
the younger guys are just as good but have less experience. sometimes the experience helps but usually $15-20+...
It just really depends on qualifications...

f@&! i work in tech support and i don't even earn that much...i deal with stupid phd holders and people of position (chief engineers) and i know i'm getting jacked by my company...btw..we're hiring...hopefully after this week, the raise i'm asking will be given to me...

anyways..average tech support in the US 75KUS...in canada 61KCND...we're getting gyped

average tech support (basic tech support) is not 61000. more like 30000-35000. this is for guys doing the typical sw and hw troubleshooting. less on network/server/infrastructures.

the 61000's are the network/system admins.

LOLOL please don't be misleading... you send those techs at those prices, doesn't mean you pay them that much. Those guys probably get 1/3 of what their company charges an hour.

i agree with those starting wages if you're talking about helpdesk sort of jobs.
61k is not the average even for a network/systems admin. thats high.
most will be around 45k average. with experience you could make 60k but thats on the high end for that job.
