Minnesota woman $1.92 Million Dollars In Debt For Downloading Music

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31453049/

Apparently the record companies in the states are fighting back against downloading and have 10 thousand cases pending in civil court. The first couple verdicts have come through the first woman had to pay $1.92 million, the second verdict for a college student was $600,000.

The jury's are not allowed to have downloaded music illegally, and none of this money ends up in the artist's hand.

Every single person sued has said they are declaring bankruptcy cause who can afford that so in the end the record companies won't see a dime and will be out the court costs.

You know what's so stupid about this, many a current artists are against the record companies themselves for this and are pro-sharing.

You can certainly tell which musicians in the current industry are in it for the art, and which ones are in it for the buck.

Artists do make money off album sales but it depends on their deal on how much they make. Some artists are signed to 360 deals were the label gets a piece of everything they make including concerts.

I looked into it if you buy a song off itunes for 99 cents an average artist see's 7.5 cents, so every album sold on itunes they get 75 cents. Unless they own the own the label and produce there own music, so an artist like eminem would see close to 3 dollars an album

artists make garbage from record sales, they make all their money from concerts, commericals, merchandise. record contracts hardly bring them any money either unless they're already popular/established artists who aren't out of their prime

Yup, artist never made bulk of their cash from record sales because the record labels were the ones cashing in but most artists, especially rappers, got smart and got their own labels and partnered up with major labels for distribution.

artists used to make a lot more money from record sales back in the days. however, times have changed.

to make money off music, before the 1950's it was concerts, then before 1999 it was record sales, then up till now its back to concerts and merchandise again

Sounds like was brave to me, pushing to challenge the law and putting her life on the line. The world needs people like this to highlight the absurdity of the issue.

The law is the law.. Highlighting it doesn't change anything. The law is explicit and the jury has to follow what the law says.. If you really want to change the law, join a lobby group or write to your US senators, not break it.

There is a fine line between brave and stupid. She took a calculated risk for a jury trial hoping she would get the sympathy of the jury.. well that didn't work, because the jury were instructed to follow the letter of the law.

Without media attention and public support, you're not going to change shit.

That's like saying that this woman is just an idiot, hell she was immune and resigned from her UN job to take on the courts:
