| New Sony PS3 slim for $299
For months, we've been blogging about rumors that Sony would cut the price of its PlayStation 3 game console from $399 to $299 and possibly announce a new trimmer model called the PS3 Slim. Well, at a press conference in Cologne, Germany, preceding the opening of the Gamescom Expo, the company finally took the wraps off the new console.
Earlier Tuesday, Kmart.com jumped the gun on the announcement and accidentally posted an ad on its home page that revealed a price cut to the "old" 80GB and 160GB PS3s to $299 and $399 respectively and hinted at the impending arrival of the new PS3 Slim.
In Cologne, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai performed the unveiling, taking the stage and announcing the PS3 was "getting a new model" and that indeed it was called the PS3 Slim.
The Slim is hitting stores the first week in September and will cost $299 (or for those who live in other regions, 299 euros or 29980 yen). Hirai says it has the same features and functions as the "old" PS3 but is 33 percent smaller, 36 percent lighter, and comes with a 120GB hard drive.
It's unclear how Sony will sell the old 80GB PS3 at the same price as the new Slim, but we'll have more details as they emerge. Until then, feel free to comment.

I wonder how much it'll be here...$350CAD anyone?
It's so cheap looking like PS2 slim...but the PS2 slim was actually slim..this one isn't slim enough.

wow are they serious
that thing looks like a cheap $99 dollar casing
the glossy black finish on the original PS3 actually looks classy, and nice display item in ur living room. That piece of shit? more like hall of shame
disappointed

I love the look, our regular PS3 got lots of fingerprints and dust showed easily on it, the matte finish will clear that up.
I'm torn now though, on the one side, the slim is smaller, quieter, and has more memory, but the fat has the ability to run Linux, and is proven to be reliable.
I'm also wondering what other features will be added/removed? I know they say it's the same, but you never know. Also is there a date on the launch?

Definitely looks a lot cheaper like the slim ps2, but at least it won't collect dust and fingerprints.

^ imo almost all consoles look ugly as sin in some way or another. at least from a distance the PS3 passes as a regular home entertainment device. the PS2 almost passed as a fancy DVD player. But up close they all look weird.

I bought one of the last “Full version” 80 gigs. So have the 4 USB ports, backwards compatibility (software based, not hardware), Memory card readers blah blah blah It also cost me an ass load.
I am wondering how many features will be cut out of the slim. Backward capability is really the big one. Is it there? Where any cuts made to the software?
The good thing about this, is it should boost sales, which in return will mean more companies developing for the PS3.

^backward compatibility was taken out for a year now
who says there's more memory?
It just runs more efficient i think...it's rumoured to have PS2 backwards compatibility so we'll wait until september to find out.
No point in upgrading to this if you already own a fat one unless the fans constantly run in high gear.

^ I would think the more efficient processor would help
If they add backwards compatibility that would be GREAT. save me so much space.

Unboxing video of new PS3 Slim. It actually looks quite good!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrOS_0Ulv7M
I'm surpised how they can house the power supply, removable hard drive all in one small slim package....
Comparison between the other consoles.

what i posted on br.com too lazy to rephrase so just quotin myself :P Quote:
you guys freaking out that there doesnt seem to be a fan or harddrive slot..... you guys realize that laptops are a lot thinner and a lot more advanced and they're able to cool and have removable hard drives right??
like i said on the front page to a prior news posting, they probably utilized heatsinks more for cooling than fans

the slim is nice but i like the big one
