haha if its anything like the original scriptment which the trailer seems to follow pretty closely then it is going to be horrible. Like fern gully except with blue furry lion men.

maybe spoiler if James Cameron was a lazy ass and didn't bother to change the 10 year old script. Then again he has said he was focusing primarily on the CGI to make it 'revolutionary'. And as most people have seen, its not exactly the life altering imagery he hyped so much.

Would this movie even be worth watching in a regular theater?

Watched it on regular 3D at Riverport, EPIC movie!!!! This is the first 3D movie I've seen where it actually works, doesn't feel artificial at all. It's so immersive and the environment is just breathtaking. I've actually enjoyed watching the CG scenes of Pandora more then the real actor ones. Go see it everyone...........one of the best movie if not the best I've seen.

i saw it in imax 3D and it was absolutely epic. the whole 3d experience with the surround sound and visuals popping at you made it really feel like you were literally in pandora. this is basically the jurassic park of the new millennium, you know, the blockbuster movie that you just have to see in the theaters when it first comes out.

with the amount of technology/visual effects invested in this movie, george lucas will be definitely lose some sleep over this.

Dances of Wolves + Last of the Mohicans +

Laputa + Princess Mononoke + Future Boy Conan, Typical Miyazaki diatribe ie people are killing earth +

some Armored Core for good measure, the aircrafts reminds me of Future Boy Conan.

I watched the Imax 3D.. the technology is getting more mature. I think it can save the film industry, since it is hard to replicate the effect on a personal computer.

PS + Celine Dion.. thankfully only at the credits

Why? ILM did a lot of the scenes for Avatar.. I am pretty sure there is a R2D2 in one of the scenes somewhere just like in Star Trek.

That's pretty cool. I didn't know that Weta turned to ILM in order to meet their deadlines. I guess we'll be expecting Star Wars in 3D in the near future (since Lucas keeps tinkering with the SW episodes every decade).

I managed to catch the IMAX 3D showing at Strawberry hill (after arriving at 6pm at Richmond Silvercity to find that the next 3 show times were sold out until 11pm). The aliens are the best CGI characters ever made, several times I had to tell myself that they weren't real................totally worth the money

oh btw if you guys who want to watch 3D IMAX, you need to buy the tickets online. Or else you will have a hard time buying the tickets at the theater unless you go there hours earlier before the show starts

some theaters do not offer online sale though...only theaters with the skip the box office line logo have that option

There were points in the movie where I thought to myself "Fuck, this story is retarded." ("Unobtainium"? REALLY?!) but it was a decent telling of a very usual story. The Last Samurai...Dances with Wolves...all the same.

However, for the entire two and a half hours, there wasn't a scene that didn't look spectacular. You just think to yourself "WOW!" no matter what you're looking at on screen. There's a lot of dialogue but it is entertaining. There are certainly scenes thrown in there simply as an exercise in 3D cinematography but I've never seen anything that looks that good before.

Strangely, the main female character...I found her performance amazing, which is weird because she isn't actually...there. If that was a person, we'd be talking Oscar.

The look of the movie is amazing. If this is the future, I can't wait. However, I don't think this particular movie will stand up in the future if this technology is used on a better script because right now, this is only a good movie because it looks amazing.

I LOVED it. Really well made and looked awesome in 3D. There were a few parts where the script could have used some work considering they had 12 years to write better lines you'd think that wouldn't happen but it didn't ruin the movie or anything.

It felt like FernGully meets The Matrix.

Visually the movie was fine, however in terms of an actual cohesive experience this movie was terrible.

I'm all for the suspension of belief, and using your imagination, but when you introduce characters and give them goals and ideals, you don't just have them do a bunch of random things that go completely contrary to what their established personality is, to try to keep the movie going.

The aliens were pretty much .. take any animal throw another pair of legs up front make em breath from their necks and add double sets of things they normally wouldnt have doubles of. Effectively fern gully meets dances with wolves but with insanely lazy character development.

Movie should've been narrated by Al Gore and a First Nations/Aboriginal Chief. Personally, I was rooting for the mechs and helicopters to rip them apart.

Okay guys, I think you're missing the point.

take a look at all of james cameron's movies, none of the plots are very good regardless. they're typical movie plots, but slightly directed in a better way.

but here's the thing with all his movies, they always showcase really cool technological advances in cinematics, which ADDS to story lines because we are visual creatures. with visuals you can more closely tell your story.

the environment and the level of detail and thought put into the environment is amazing.

seriously, was terminator 1 or 2 that unpredictable? the stories were pretty lame. robot comes back, saves person, or kills person. lol what? but c'mon the shit that MAKES the story is awesome. terminators? remember t2 when it first came out? the CGI in that movie back then was ORGASMIC man. the t1000 looked fuckin NUTS.

aliens? c'mon. it's always about the environment and the way they portray that "world".

take for instance, lord of the rings, ... c'mon how original is the story. wizards and elves vs monsters. good guys always win, but the environment and detail in the story is amazing.

Terminator's story line wasn't done to death with just a rebrand or a reuse of new characters.

Avatar was any American Indian uprising movie which was done to death. It was visually stunning, no doubt about that, but it was the same: Indians vs. the White Man.

It certainly caters to today's environmentalist mentality though.

seems like a lot of the later opinions really bash this movie.
I was able to predict most of the things in the movie but I very satisfied with the movie. One of the best movies I've seen if not the best. Final fantasy storylines are great because you play it for 80 hours and u grow with the characters but you can only do so much in a 2 or 3 hour movie with a storyline. The movie is worth it on special effects alone. Like someone said before, it was more enjoyable seeing the CGI scenes over the human scenes. If this movie doesn't satisfy your movie hunger, I don't know what will.

The 3D was painfully unneccessary. I think silvercity charged more for it. I agree that the plotlines were predictable, and that the images were magnificent. Avatar without 3-d is probably better than with 3-d.

James Cameron has a lot riding on 3D tech and to his credit, he definitely delivered on the visuals.

I guess Giovanni Ribisi had some debts to pay by taking on the Napoleon role.

Just saw Avatar yesterday. I must say it is one of the best movie I saw this year. No wonder it is sold out an hour before screening. Even though the plot is predictable, it moves you emotionally. I must say I cried like a little girl. The graphics are just incredible (3D). So get off your sofa and move your butt to watch the movie.

I say 8/10. The visuals were obviously amazing but the movie fell short at the story. There was waaayy too much hype for this movie!

Watched it yesterday at SilverCity and was happy that the lineup was not bad at all. Imax was sold out for the entire day to no surprise. Got there at 2:50pm for the 3:30pm Digital 3D show and was probably about 40th in line by the time we got our tickets. Lined up for 10 mins then went in and waited another 20. All and all a short wait.

In terms of the movie I won`t go into detail but overall I thought it was decent and would give it a solid 3.5-4 stars out of 5.

yea i watched the digital 3d and i was still captivated. now i'm probably going to see this a 2nd time in imax so i can compare the two. i can't see how someone can hate this movie. even if the plot was predictable, the 1st half of the movie was so visually appealing that it's still enjoyable. imax 3d was sold out at 1100pm riverport on a wednesday night...

Watched it tonight at Riverport Silvercity.

3D effects, MUCH improved over previous "3d" films, was used throughout the movie so yes the glasses stay on the entire time (good thing they're disposable and therefore more sanitary).

Great CGI, and I mean great, the visuals in this movie were absolutely.. well, there's no word to express it. Avatars looked very real, as in people with body paint.

Solid story line, not mind blowing but adequate.

However...
How come they couldn't shut off the "links" to the avatars from a remote station/master server type of thing lol

i watched this on xmas day with friends. at first we were going to watch the 6:30pm one but it was sold out (we arived before 5:15pm). i actually didn't know what i was going to watch (hadn't not paid attention to all the hype). waited around 4 hrs (killed 2 hrs doing whatever, 2 hrs lining up to get good seats) to watch the 10:30pm show and i kept saying to my friends "this better be worth this friggin wait".

All i can say is i'm very glad i waited. excellent movie and like Ulic said, it's not all about the story itself. the visuals definitely made the movie 10x better, overall i gave it a 9.5/10.

the only thing i didn't like about the 3d were some of the awkward camera movements that would easily make some people motion sick. some of the focus was not logical (ie, foreground objects being blurry while characters faces are in clear focus). yes, i realise the point is to bring focus to what's going on, but if you want it to be a life like experience, it just doesn't make sense. neither did the shots where the camera is moving backwards.

watched it a few days ago.

graphics were really good (eye-openingly so).
the 3D was unnecessary and a bit distracting at times (i think i would have enjoyed the graphics more without it).
plotline = dances with wolves (minus the historically accurate inevitability at the end).

i'd give it 7.5/10. to me, in a movie, plotline > graphics (however impressive they may be).

It was packed, lined up 1.5 hours before showtime and got awesome seats.

The movie is also featured in 3D in normal theaters as well. Then there is always IMAX 3D which of course just a bigger screen etc...Hope that helps lol. If you going for IMAX, buy the tickets in advance or online seems to sell out fast.
So people who are prone to motion sickness should just watch Avatar in a normal theatre, one without 3D?

I'll start off by saying that I did enjoy the movie. I was engaged and entertained throughout. I won't deny that. And I would recommend it if you like special effects and action.

But it isn't as great a movie as everyone seems to think it is. It isn't just the story that is derivative (a la comparisons to pocahontas and dances with wolves). It isn't just that the dialogue was mechanical and the characters one-dimensional and the actors over-acted. I actually found the "world" not that impressive either.

With a $300 million budget, you'd think they'd spend more time and effort on fleshing out pandora. They created 5 unoriginal alien creatures to inhabit this place: the na'vi people, the big hammerhead rhino, a pterodactyl thing, big ass horses, and hyenas on steroids. an entirely new world with only 5 creatures to inhabit it? You can spot more wildlife at stanley park.

Not only that, but they are not very original designs. They threw a hammerhead shark and a rhino together. Mashed humans and cats together to make the Na'vi. Hulked up some hyenas and gave it an extra set of eyes. They hunt in packs. Horse-like creatures are domesticated and used for military purposes. Floating mountains, plants that seem intelligent? Been there, done that.

If you look at the character designs for Lord of the Rings or Star Wars, not only are they extensive in number and variety but also original in design. There are more fantastically creative creatures in the Tatooine bar scene alone than all of Pandora.

Then there is the Na'vi people themselves. Their culture is completely ripped off of real, existing native tribes past and present. That scene where they sit around the tree to pray, that is straight out of an Indonesian native ritual. Check out the documentary "Baraka" to see that. The rest are Native American stereotypes, even down to their hairstyles.

And finally, the spaceships and weapons were not impressive at all. Big ass exoskeleton robots? C'mon. James Cameron basically did that for Aliens more than 20 years ago, and have been done numerous times since.

I found the lack of innovation in this film very surprising. I was very much looking forward to seeing it and was expecting to be blown away . . . well, I was satisfied, but not blown away. If I was to pick the best special effects epic blockbuster of the last decade, I would pick LOTR. And I'm not even a fan of LOTR.

In my opinion, there is a take home message to this movie.

It's related to the present situation and relationship between our modern society and the aboriginals. The intensification of globalisation has not only eradicated many smaller cultures and their traditions, but also rapid depletion of the worlds resources such as fossil fuels.

The movie may be portraying the worldly balance that needs to be maintained, in both social and environmental aspects.

yeah he already did, it's called terminator 2. It's the best thing he has. especially the part when arnold kicks a desk and it flies across the room breaks a window then he comes out with a mini gun, the helicopter pilot goes "SHIT THATS A DAMN MINIGUN!" and then he mows everything down (but doesnt kill anyone lol) then, if that wasnt enough he uses and oldschool grenade launcher and blows up a few cars for kicks, then walks away.

Yes, I suppose that is the explicit message of the movie. But it's a message that has been rehashed so many times in Hollywood, that it's fast losing its impact. Who doesn't know we should take care of Mother Nature in this day and age? Who doesn't know the Aboriginals of the world are mistreated and marginalised? If James Cameron truly wants to make an intellectual/revolutionary (socially and politically, rather than technologically) movie, he should present new insights into this problem, not just restate it ad nauseam. But that is not his goal. His goal is to make a cool 3D movie AND THAT'S TOTALLY FINE, but let's not pretend it's anything more than a cool 3D movie.

And once we realise it is little more than just a cool 3D movie, we can critique it on the basis of cinematic standards, rather than its intellectual value (which it has little of). So by the cinematic standards set by great movies of the past, I believe the movie is derivative and not creative; my reasons are given above.

Yeah, here's the thing: it's not a NEW story... but then what is anymore?

But it's a GOOD retelling of a much-retold story... and let's face it, the visuals are incredible.

And here's the thing about the 3D: the week before, we saw Sherlock Holmes in "Digital 3D"... that was pretty good, and for the most part the 3D was well-played, but there were spots that were gimmicky as well; places where they threw something right in your face just to show off, "Ooo, look what we can do in 3D!". Not a lot of them, and they weren't entirely out of place, but most of those instances were still gimmicky.

Avatar didn't have any of that. The 3D wasn't put in there TO BE the star of the show. Nowhere (that I can recall anyway) did it feel like Cameron was just going, "Ooo, look what I can do in 3D!" It's a complaint that's often leveled against CG in general, especially with big-action films - the the effects ARE the star and the storyline is just a weak vehicle for them. Well with Avatar, the 3D - and CG as a whole - is used subtly and near perfectly to simply enhance what is, again, a GOOD retelling of a much-retold story.

I saw it with my sister a couple weekends ago in the digital 3D. She saw it with her mom the next weekend in IMAX 3D and was blown away. I'm REALLY looking forward to checking out that version!

Saw it Friday in Imax and it was good.

It was way too long. I fell asleep for a good 15 minutes during the middle portion of the movie and only woke up because a co-worker nudged me.

Negative...

Avatar will keep on playing in the Imax until another film distributes another imax movie to replace it. Considering we haven't heard anything advertised in imax in the near future, it can be assumed that Avatar will be playing in Imax for another month.

The moment you hear about an upcoming film in imax, that will be the film to replace avatar.

...for the most part the 3D was well-played, but there were spots that were gimmicky as well; places where they threw something right in your face just to show off, "Ooo, look what we can do in 3D!".

Avatar didn't have any of that. The 3D wasn't put in there TO BE the star of the show. Nowhere (that I can recall anyway) did it feel like Cameron was just going, "Ooo, look what I can do in 3D!"

the scene where giovanni ribisi putts the golf ball into the coffee mug comes to mind...ooo look at the ball coming at me!

i thought the 3D technology only worked on pandora (and there, it did look really good and worked very well). the scenes at the base looked pretty bad to me though. real life is not THAT 3D. you walk into a room, people don't pop out at you. there's a harmony to the way things appear to your eyes but in the base scenes, things popped out at you too evenly throughout the screen. in real life, some things pop out at you, others fade to the back, certain things look flat, and colours vary in vibrancy. i think they went overboard with the 3D.

this is just a superficial criticism though. all new technologies need time to be perfected. but we will look at this movie five years from now and think, wow that looks so dated.

A Vancouver man filed a copyright infringement lawsuit Monday against Avatar director James Cameron, his company and movie studio 20th Century Fox.

The lawsuit was filed by Emil Malak, 57, who owns the Bellagio Café on Hornby Street near Robson.

“I’m not accusing James Cameron of theft. He’s a genius,” Emil Malak said in an interview at his café in downtown Vancouver, across from the Vancouver Art Gallery.

But he claims there are many unexplained similarities between his sci-fi screenplay, Terra Incognita, first conceived in 1996, and Cameron’s Avatar.

Avatar is to be released back into theatres with 10-12 more minutes of footage. in IMAX 3D and other 3D formats.

supposedly they were making such good money, but alice in wonderland kicked them out of IMAX theatres, they want to re-release it again to continue making a profit.

Let this movie die! :crybaby: I can't understand how this movie has lasted so long, nor been so popular. It's not a particularly good movie, and the 3D effect doesn't look very good. The plot line is barely razer thin, and there were no particularly good acting moments. It's an average movie that's got lots of special effects. It unfortunately speaks volumes about people when this (and Titanic) are the two highest grossing movies...

Watched it... wow... it looks great but the story is so heavily influenced by "call me joe"

Cameron admits to being a scifi nut as a kid, so i have no doubt he's read it

here's the wiki summary

Call Me Joe (1957) is a science fiction story by Poul Anderson about an attempt to explore the surface of the planet Jupiter using remotely controlled artificial life-forms. It focuses on the feelings of the disabled man who operates the artificial body.

The Science Fiction Writers of America selected Call Me Joe for The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Volume Two.
(this guy in a wheelchair is used to control a body who's able to survive the environment, and ends up wanting to live in that body rather than his own crippled body; etc etc)

I wouldnt call the movie a ripoff, since its so different but the character sure seems like it

the Blu-Ray is a must for anyone who likes or even dislikes the movie ^^

i thought this wouldnt BE released in 3D version since the 3D tvs arent up to par or wouldnt be out when the movie his home?

It'll be released in 3D but not until Next Year (novembers release will only be a set with special features) They probably need a lot longer to get the 3D edition setup because it needs better compression/etc considering the 2D movie alone has taken up a whole BD-50 disc (and 3d is 2 1080p streams)

3d tvs are out though and they're up to standards
