Lets share ways we can beat the house using tips and tricks
any PNE employees wanna share ideas?

I'll start it off...

4 ball pool game- try breaking the balls softly so they are all at one side. its easier to pocket 4 balls close together than balls spread apart.

Crossbow. The one in the middle with the frayed string....... aim down the middle (left-right) and low by about 3cm. Take your time and breath slowly. Don't use the one on the extreme right. The sights are off by a mile. My daughter got it the first time and so did my youngest son. I never tried it. In any case, the one in the middle seems to be the one that most of the wins are from.

The throw the ball in the bucket game. The guy who works at the game showed us the other day and he got it like every time. First of all you don't need to stand in front of the bucketr you will be throwing in too which almost everyone does. Throw to a bucket thats to your left or right with a left or right spin depending which one your throwing too and I guess what hand your using so that it will hit the wall of the bucket and curl around in it. Some of these tricks are easier said then done but yea.

Whatever happened to those coin machines? The ones where the surfaces slide back and forth causing coins to fall lower and lower until you get like a jackpot of coins and tokens.

It was so addicting.

No, the game has horizontal plates that move back and forth. The plates are full of coins. The player inserts coins and the machine flips or shoots them up high and they end up on one of the plates. When enough coins accumulate, they push others to fall down and pile up on the lowest plate that doesn't move. Eventually those get pushed off into the chute that the coins go down (to the player).

I went to some kid place with games like that one, the like bucket with the coins would always be one tilt away from spilling all the coins so i'd just shake the machine and make them drop. this was when i was 8

this isn't true.
the sites are sited to the best of the operators ability.
i used to work the crossbow game...

there were always winners on every single bow...
the bow's are old, so that is probably why the sites/accuracy of them are shit.

Really....... is that why the crossbow on the very right at this year's fair is all the way over to the left? I guess it's stuck there. So, why use it right? I just mentioned the one in the middle is pretty accurate.

The guy before my daughter shot, won three times in a row, my daughter then takes one shot and wins. Two days later, my son goes there and gets it on first try. I think the one in the middle is the best bet. Perhaps you can go to the fair and check for yourself.

Best trick Ever.

The game were you sit in a seat, wait until the buzzer, then an area below you releases a ball, which you roll down a bowling alley type thing, where it hits a ramp and the end, and hopefully lands in a higher point hole. You only get 1 ball, and after it enters the hole for its point value, you have to patiently wait till it rolls down the pipes and pop out near you to roll again.

there is roughly 12-15 seats, and they only start playing when atleast 8-10 people sit down. the more people who play, the better the prize is. Everyone pays the same amount, but there is only one winner. the most points makes your character on the backwall advance to the finish line faster.

Anyways..

the trick is, have 2 ppl, sit at the very left seats. farthest from "Carny"(sp?)

have the person on the right between the two friends, give his ball to the person on the left. Now he has twice the balls, and twice the advantage to win over the other Losers.

it's weird because i saw the guy who works there and he is able to climb it every single time and grab the nano!! it looks easy! I got a feeling it has to do with the guy 'helping' you and 'supporting' you by holding onto the bottom for the first few steps and once he let go..you fall...

89blkcivic is right. We recently replaced some of the crossbows for the fair and my friend who manages the game says there is one that is way more precise than the other ones.

For block buster, we are supposed to place the blocks so the edge of them are facing directly the person throwing. A good spot to throw at is the side of the blocks on the upper half of the most bottom block requring somewhat of a side throw. I could get it 1/5 times if my aim was right. I told a guy to throw it at that spot after he spent $40 and he walked away with a bike.

One ball, aim for the 2 bottom bottles where from the top they just begin to meet as the bottle gets fatter. I told a little boy to aim for there and throw it hard and he got it on the 3rd throw. If you dont have good aim...dont bother.

No, I don't think it has anything to do with the guy holding the bottom.

This is one of those things where if you practice enough, you'll get it and from there on in it'll be doable every single time. But you'll never be able to get it the first few times because your body hasn't learned to deal with it yet.

I'm sure technique does help though... and staying really low might be ideal.

They actually have a few of these at the Playland booth where the Skeeball is... but the stupid thing is no longer do they pay out quarters when they fall over the edge! You just get a few tickets that are pretty much worthless...

4-Ball at PNE is REALLY hard. Even if you can do it at the pool hall, you'll have a lot tougher time doing it at the PNE tables.

The main difference is that the corners are WAY tougher.

At pool halls, the corner mouths can fit two balls wide. PNE's can only fit maybe 1.5 at most.

At pool halls, the corner mouths sides are flat. Even if the ball is slightly off, it'll bank in. PNE's are rounded like snooker tables. It'll reject any ball that doesn't go straight in. I'm not even sure it's possible to do a rail shot on those tables.

Aside from that, the equipment is probaby pretty suspect too... like the cues might not shoot very true.

Spent $20 on Crossbow and got raped on it...The ones on the right are pretty off, I didn't try the middle but I tried the left two, Both of them were pretty off IMO and it was different each time the person clocked the arrow. Walked away with nothing...how sad :(

The rails are also snooker-style - they're L shaped not V.

The other problem with this game (not so much here but blatantly obvious at the Cgy. Stampede) is that they place the tables so close together, that it's almost impossible to get an accurate shot when you're close to the side rail, shooting to the other side.

This one pissed me off. One time I put in coins and it took about 30 seconds or maybe a bit longer for the coins to finally get pushed. A delayed chain of events. But by then, the slot where coins come out got closed. A mechanism that occurs to prevent coins from falling by accident when no one is acutally there playing. I didn't know of this mechanism. But I guess if you suddenly stop putting coins in for 30 seconds, that slot will close up. Got pissed, cause by the sound of it, I think probably at least 10 coins would have came out.

Make sure the guy at that ladder climb game isn't helping you stablize the ladder when you begin. The last time I went, I saw this happening. The guy would hold the ladder in the beginning, kinda of like helping you get on it. But what he's really doing is stablizing it for you, until you are somewhere 1/4 up, then let go. Your body, through the first 1/4 climbing would think you got it stabled on your own, but when the guy suddenly lets go, you're balance is gonna get fked up and you'll fall.

Also, for crossbow, it depends on how the operator 'sets' the bow, although they aren't 100% accurate. You can ask the operator to set it yourself. If you do that, you can 'test' the site out by firing a couple shots to see where it hits and adjust your shot accordingly.

I haven't been to the PNE this year, so I don't know if the game is still around. It's the game where you use a BB gun rifle and shoot this piece of paper with a star until no part of the star is left. I'm not a pro at it (only won twice) but here is my advice:

Use the bullets slowly in the beginning. Shoot it once, adjust the aim, and shoot again. When you know where you're shooting, shoot the outer edge of the star first. After the edge is pretty much torn, fire in rounds of 2-4 to tear the whole star right off! Make sure to save some rounds in case there are bits of the star's corners left.

If you need a GUARANTEED prize, then the birthday game is the way to go. I believe there are 13 possible outcomes, so if you cover every single one with $2, it'll cost you $26 but you'll be guaranteed to win. :p

Actually, there's another similar game that might be better... it's the first time I've seen it. The game is run by the carnies that are only there during the fair. They have a giant spinning wheel with 10 different colours, and you toss a ball in a net above it where it will then fall onto the wheel and land in a hole within a colour.

I played that one and fluked out and managed to win a banana monkey for the fiance with one shot. :p

Haven't been to playland in years...

What's the best game in terms of money -> prize ratio?

I remember playing those games where you'd put down $5 and when you win all you get is some piece of shit dinky ass stuffy from a trash can they have hidden under the tables

On the lower ledge, there are 2 openings, one on each side so that the coins that run down the edge go down these openings and go back to the guy operating the machines.

Last year, the wife and I went on a cruise and they had 2 of these machines with some special prizes including $5 chips and a $50 stack of ones. Needless to say, the guy who won the $50 spent about $200 in quarters to get it. That's when we learned first hand about the openings on the side that do not let you win the money.

I won at that game once. On the break, I went with power and sunk the 2 side balls. Then I took my time to get the remaining 2 balls. I think it was more of a fluke than anything else.

for the bastetball game the hopp is is not round is in a ova shape so is harder to win.

There is also a game where u ride a bike from one side to another. The bilke is pretty busted up so do not use it to balance or change direction. U have to use your body to do that.

There is another game where u use a fishing rod and try to get a coke bottle up(it was lay flat). The trick is that when u start to get the bottle up u have to go in a almost constant speed. if you don't the bottle will either roll over and fall back down. Also near the end when the bottle is almost straight up try to speed up a little.

the hoops are oval, make sure you see someone sink a basket firt before you choose that hoop though.

use to win them almost every year. believe it was 2 bucks to get 2 shots in a row to win.
deal with the guy working there, and say $5 per shot, if i get one shot in, i get the prize. more often than not he'll allow it

I didn't see that there this year, but maybe I just missed it.

But it's not that the bike is "busted up", it's that the steering is reversed. If you turn right, the wheel will turn left... so obviously everything you've learned from riding a bike gets thrown out the window, and your body will have no idea how to react.

This is another one of those games where if you've practiced it enough times, it'll be a piece of cake and you'll be able to do it EVERYTIME afterwards... but if you're doing it for the first time, it's pretty much impossible.

I played this when my family took a trip to California last year, they have it at the boardwalk in Santa Cruz. Not sure if the whole mechanism is the same as the PNE one, but the one I used was full automatic. I tried to spray in the middle of the star, but I would up missing a few corners of red in the end.

ive won the 4 ball pool game lots of times.
the shit thing about those tables is its really hard to shoot soft shots to set up your cue ball. the reason being, the slate is really uneven.... so you shoot soft, the ball curves unpredictably. basically, the game is fixed because of this... but its still doable. just need luck on your side to get good cueball placement sometimes because of the uneven slate

The booth where they guess your age. well actually they guess which Month you were born.... the claim to be off by 1-2 months. So if they say January, that covers nov, dec, jan, feb, march.

well their trick is, Scribble on the paper, so the writing is barely legible, So the word can look like January, June or July. and that will cover every month BUT October.

So go to the booth, have him write his scribbled crap, then say october. haha he is fucked.

Basketball game isnt that bad. You gotta arch the hell out of your shot so dont bother going through proper form. You basically have to get it to come straight down into the net, or you can bank it in. I usually make it by banking it.

Got booted from the "Bowling ball in the valley" game again. This year they only let me win 2 Jumbos (2 wins ea.). Get $20 in toonies and have at 'er. By the 4th ball you should get the hang of it and start winning. Cost $14....(baller!!! haha)

A few stalls down was the "3 cups w/ a wiffle ball" game. They only have 2 BIG ASS prizes, a giant pink pig and an equally huge cow. GF jokingly asks if I want to try it, she'll buy. Obviously, with prizes that big it ain't gonna be easy but why not, I'm freerolling. Drop the 3 clear cups off the platform with the wiffle ball attached to the spring loaded gun. Gun is attached to a chain and you can reach as far as the chain limits you. First time I aimed, chain fully extended and only hit the top cup off. The way I aimed, the gun was low, pointing up. Second time I aimed at the top 3rd of the bottom cups with the gun pointed slightly down. WIN!!! $4.

Had to walk all the way back to the car with this stuff cause we had a lot more to see and it was getting heavy. Got a lot of, "Look at that huge pig!!!" with great smiles. Barely fit in the back seat of my friend's EL (too big for trunk).

BTW those are random girls. The pink is just a coincidence.

Good job...

I'm two for two this year at the colour wheel game where you throw a ball into a basket above the revolving colour wheel and see which colour the ball lands up on...

It's similar to the birthday dice game, but I think it's much better because there is SOME skill involved. The hole from the net is aimed off to one side, so you can try to time it so that the ball falls out when your colour is coming around...

Basketball game isnt that bad. You gotta arch the hell out of your shot so dont bother going through proper form. You basically have to get it to come straight down into the net, or you can bank it in. I usually make it by banking it.

Are you fukkin kidding me? You need a PHD in physics to make a ROUND ball fit in a OVAL hole......... I laughed at when she asked if I wanted to try. I said, why is the basket oval, can you make a shot go in? and all she did was smile, and say the hoop isnt regulation...

Got booted from the "Bowling ball in the valley" game again. This year they only let me win 2 Jumbos (2 wins ea.). Get $20 in toonies and have at 'er. By the 4th ball you should get the hang of it and start winning. Cost $14....(baller!!! haha)

A few stalls down was the "1 wiffle ball 3 cups" game.

My buddy did it. You have to shoot up high so ball travels through a parabolic path in the air through the hoop.:D

This is how I win a prize at Playland. On the Whack-A-Mole game, wait till it's just a bunch of little/younger kids who are playing, and then try to get in on that game. Most times, you will beat them, because they're just not fast or strong enough! Yes, it's kinda low..but hey, their parents paid for them to play. If you can get over your guilty conscious, it's a pretty easy win. Same goes for the water-gun one.
And you all know about the skee-ball (or those other games) where you win tickets to trade in...when the machine is spitting out tickets, keep pulling just hard enough not to rip the tickets, but hard enough to pull the tickets out.
Pea Wheel: If it's not a full table, you can try to hang onto a pea for the next round if you didn't win. This will increase your chances to win the next round. The table usually has the dealer and a supervisor, so it's up to you. Don't blame me if you get caught! Again, I don't endorse any of these methods... good luck!

They do not have this at Playland, usually only at carnivals in the USA.

I remember spending 20$ or so on a game called oneball or something? Where you throw a ball to knock over 3 bottles? The bottles had fucking magnets on the bottom and you had to get ALL 3 bottles off the platform... (remember they had magnets). I remember one try where I had all 2 bottles off the platform, and last one tipped over, and I had like 10-15 or so people watching and it magically stood back up from horizontal position haha.. everyone caused a fuss that time :P. Anyways, if you spend enough money on it you will eventually fluke it out and win a huge ass gorilla (bigger than the pig above!) Funny thing is, driving back home in it looked funny with a huge gorilla in the backseat!

Anyways, i've seen people do the basketball shot one... Some tricks are to shoot it high as someone said above.. But I think its also good to try to bank it? (off the back, hitting front rim and making it roll into the hoop)

I remember another game where you had to get the ball into the basket without it falling out? Lots of tricks to that one too... easiest one is to put a lot of spin on it so it either spun around and into the bottom, or straight with backspin so it rolls back into the bottom.

yes we were watching the people on the ladder for like 30 min trying to figure it out. The guy who works there did it a few times but i didn't see anyone else make it to the top. Any tricks or just a good balancing act.

I think the trick is to keep your weight on one leg(left) while keeping weight on your one arm (right). Alternate between the 2 to move up but keep your extra arm+leg off the ladder to prevent extra pressure to one side.

It's been years since I've been at the PNE.. such good memories working there as a kid. If the carnies has the bike where you ride across the line, the trick to that one is to ride it as if you were to fall on purpose.

Most games aren't worth it to play, esp the knocking of the 3 milk bottle. That one's dependant on how the operator sets up. If its not perfect, you'll never win.

It may have been covered already in this thread, but the one with lifting the coke bottle with the fishing rod.. that one involves lifting it slowly, then pushing the rod forward and down. You want to keep the tension in the line even at all times. If its not tight, the bottle falls over. If you master it, you can do it almost all the time... unfortunately it takes a lotta practice to train the muscle memory..

yupp. I've done it.

Always left leg+right hand, right leg+left hand.
When you're switching, be sure to switch both leg and hand at the same time. Naturally you'll want to have both legs planted while you're switching hands. But keep your sides even and center of gravity low:thumbsup:

That looks good... I just googled this:

Watch the carnival game operator scale the ladder. Carnival game operators often demonstrate their agility on the Ladder Climb carnival game to encourage participation. Pay attention to where his feet and hands fall while moving up the ladder.
Pay for a turn and get on the ladder. Position yourself so that you are balanced.
Ignore the rungs of the ladder. The properties of a rope ladder are very different from traditional ladders. Treating a rope ladder like a traditional one guarantees that you will lose your balance before reaching the top.
Step onto the side rope located between the rungs. While stepping on the side rope, move your hands up the ladder. For example, if you take a step with your left foot, move your right hand up the ladder to even out the movement. Distribute your body's weight over the ladder so that one area of your body will not tip the ladder over and cause you to fall.
Rely on your balance. You have to move carefully and maintain your equilibrium if you want to make it to the top.
Reach the top.
Ring the bell.
Collect your prize.

I was wondering if one of the tricks is to tell the guy NOT to hold the ladder down for you in the beginning. At first, it seems like they're just being nice to help you out with the balance but it seems like every time the guy stops holding it, you fall. I think it's because it's somewhat deceptive that you may think you're good to go, that you're balanced but really, you're not because he's 'holding you down' Can anyone confirm this?

won this guy yesterday from the game where you lob the ball up, it hits the backboard and then into the laundry basket

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs191.ash2/45383_10150253730645416_605980415_14220300_687005_ n.jpg

You gotta throw it high up, put forward spin on it. If you put enough spin and have it skim the backboard, the ball won't bounce off much and fall into the basket

Played this yesterday for the first time in years and won. But I used to work at the game so I know how it's done. They changed it now so that it's a broom stick and regular string and there's this stupid barrier that sorta blocks your vision of the bottle while you're lifting it up. Still the same concept explained by LiquidTurbo.
Lift up slowly and with control until about 60 degrees or so and then push forward and down while keeping the string tense. If you don't have control of it while lifting it up, just drop it back down to the starting position and start all over otherwise the bottle will just roll off.
