| Campus living, University life, the whole Bundle!
So I'm entering my final year of high school, and I'm hoping to get a scholarship to get out of BC to go to school. I do, however, have a few questions for those who have gone through the whole university experience and lived on campus, etc.
I'm really curious about what's offered in the dorms. Are you given cable TV? Internet? And how is the whole social aspect of university? So far, I've really been shut down by parents and kept away from all the drinking and partying, and I'm thinking if I stay in BC living at home nothings going to change. I think your only young once and you should get that chance to live and experience life, have fun, but you must also know your limitations.
I'm planning to spend at least 8 years in university so I'm really not too sure what to expect really. Please feel free to leave any comments or advice. Remember, I really have absolutely no idea what to expect entering university but I want to make it a memorable experience!

lol pretty vague question
depends where you plan on going to school, what kind of person you are...
essentially... its what you make it, so if you want to have a good time, meet lots of people im sure you'll find a way to do so, maybe join some clubs? just be out going

8 years for undergrad sounds about right if you plan to party everyday.

There are generally two main types of students within any med/dentistry class.
1.) The type that studies their ass off and work really really hard.
2.) The type that parties all day yet still manages to obtain amazing grades.
Make sure you are the latter before you party your life away. Everyone says they know their limits, but once you are hooked (and it's really easy to), you will just look back and feel sorry for yourself. My advice is to skip the partying until you actually get into Dentistry. Besides, partying isn't exactly an EC activity. What you should be really thinking about is which University best corresponds to your career aspirations.

if you have the funds to move out..go for it
if you were going to dental school afterwards you might wanna juwst stay at home and save your money for that instead.
unless you're very well rounded don't expect to get into one right after you finish your undergrad

TYIA | There are two types of dorms. The first type is what everyone knows about. You get a room to yourself or you share it with someone else and everyone eats at a cafeteria. The 2nd type is a shared suite where it's you and 2 or 3 other guys sharing a suite. You feed yourself. Most dorms will have at least one common room where there's a TV. There may be an option for you to hook up cable for your room/suite so you can get yourself a TV and of course, pay for your own cable bill. They pretty much all have wired internet included in the cost.
There are lots of social activities organized specifically for people who live in the dorm. Campuses pretty much have a life of their own. It's a good social experience. Some people like dorm live, others don't. Most people live in a dorm in first year and then find other places with friends the rest of the way. Those who like it end up being resident advisors later on because they live there for free. They deal with student activities as well as if students are having problems or causing trouble.
While there is some merit to the excessive partying while living away, I think it's more about the person than the environment you're in. You'll find a way to party living in residence or living at home if that's your mentality.
Remember, staying at home doesn't necessarily mean you will be there for all 4 years. There's always exchange.

unless you're very well rounded don't expect to get into one right after you finish your undergrad | I'm hoping for a scholarship so I can go study away and gain some independence I guess. And I'm trying to keep myself active (and plan on doing some more volunteering) to get that well-rounded resume for when I do apply to dentistry. Any advice on what they might be looking for exactly? Not getting in after my undergrad is just something that's unacceptable!

Unless you're a genius, you'll be working your ass off studying so don't expect going out every night partying.

Never expected to be partying everyday and every night. Hell I have to remember my parents are paying for me to go to school, not for partying. But I'd like to at least experience some of it, and get my share of fun. Gotta look for that perfect balance I guess!

Yeah I'm trying to figure out what I need to do to give myself at least a chance to get in once I'm done my undergrad. Worst comes to worst I'll head over to the states to study in a private college once if I can't get into dentistry in Canada (quite competitive).
