Wooden roller coaster is still alive and well, the log ride too, which although not that old is still one of the best and most classic rides.

My favourite part of the Wooden roller coaster is cuddling up next to the cute girl next to you. "I swear, it felt like I was going to fall out, I needed to hold onto you for safety reasons" :ilied:

I'm a first generation chinese born and raised in Vancouver and I'm in support of the gentrification of Chinatown.

I do like Chinatown for its history, charm and culture but lets face it.

When was the last time you were in Chinatown?
When was the last time you were in Chinatown after 8pm (aside from night market)?

Chinatown has lost it's appeal to the more rounded and developed chinese malls in Richmond, Burnaby.

With the gentrification it'll only help build out Downtown Vancouver, which imo is what we need. It'll also bring more awareness, sense of community and much needed foot traffic into the area where it's dead after 5pm every day.

The City of Vancouver already has in plans to gentrify it but with that in mind they also want to keep the historic and heritage components - which I highly support.

I don't think it'll be gone persay.

Just that Chinatown will be there in addition to some modern highrises coming along.

As long as there is a support base of old chinese grandmas, grandpas and the core business stay in tact it'll still be there just not in the forefront but in the background.

We always used to go to china town for Rice and other asian goodies... i remember you pay for your rice then you get a ticket, then go around the corner give your ticket to another worker and he gets the rice for you. lol. that's the most significant china town thing i remember from when i was younger.

Not Vancouver history, but an interesting bit of Lower Mainland history.

Prior to 1924, the farmland between Abbotsford and Chilliwack was the site of the 40 kilometer long Sumas Lake. Two rivers were re-routed, the lake was drained, and dykes built to create farmland.

I used to visit Kuno garden (for obvious reasons) all the time when I was younger with my family, it was like a family road trip (my grandparents didn't drive much..) and they would tell me stories about how my great grandpa's boat was taken away in the war or how great great grandpa came over on a small fishing boat to Canada way back when. I recall the garden used to be more well kept, now there are some weeds etc growing in the dirt. Also I recall there used to be more fishing boats in the summer, doesn't seem to be as many boats anymore, if the fishing dying down? http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3389/4577521190_0668604cbd_z.jpg

Bump to an old thread; I got nostalgic talking to a friend of mine, and we both lament that we don't have and can't find a picture of the old mural at Grandview and Commercial. It had a woman and a log; the log said "I love you", with the woman replying "You wood!". I've done a quintrillion google image searches, and sadly it was replaced before the days of smartphones and digital cameras being cheap and common.

For those of you curious where exactly it was, it was here: Google Maps (http://goo.gl/maps/BP7Eg)

If anyone has a picture or knows where to find one, I'd huegly appreciate it. It was up for at least a decade if not more, and I miss it so :okay:

Finally found a terrible version of it:

This is a great thread. I remember a lot of the things mentioned so far since I moved here in '73 from the island.

Anyone remember Zim's Speed Shop that used to be on Joyce street? One of my fav places to buy parts for my Chevy van. Van's were all the rage in the 70's and I had the drivetrain built up so much that I was getting second gear rubber with the automatic. I spent many friday and saturday nights crusing Kingsway and downtown.

How about Mother Tuckers down by Stanley Park?

One thing I have to remember is to talk to my Dad and get some of the stories that he has about living in Vancouver back in the fifties. He has never mentioned it but I think he has a bit of a storied past judging from things I've heard from other people.

MG1, do you know any of the people that lived in the Raymur projects? I used to hang around there a bit back in the 70's because I had friends living there. We got into building cars and then motorcycles back then.

The Woodward's in New West was awesome. Best food floor evar! Their lasagna was to die for. Many a people bought it fresh from Woodward's, baked it at home, and passed it off for their own at dinner parties, LOL.

As far as the downtown Vancouver store goes, a part of Vancouver died when it shut its doors for good.

They say a picture paints a thousand words, but nothing comes close to the experience of actually having been there - the people, the crazy $1.49 days, etc. I will never forget the times I helped my mom carry the groceries home from Woodwards and having their soft serve - the world's best, no doubt. Happy times, simpler times.

Not exactly Vancouver, but relevant nonetheless: the Richmond Museum's current exhibition chronicles the evolution of transportation in and around Richmond up to the present day. I took a short walk through it and found it to very comprehensive.

On The Move: Richmond's Transportation Legacy
July 23, 2013 - January 26, 2014
Opening Reception: Tuesday, July 23, 7:00 p.m.
This exhibit explores, through photographs and artefacts from the Museum's collection and on loan from the community, how changing modes of transportation have shaped this city. Themes include transportation related to sea, land and air, and contemporary issues such as city planning.

I used to ride around with older friends when I was like 14-15 in their cars, I remember once a bunch of us went to check out the hookers and I could not believe how many prostitutes we saw. Davie street was such an incredible shithole, it's hard to imagine today.

One of my high school teachers in like grade 9, an alternate school teacher, used to use the acronym "S.C.O.D.S." when he spoke of dropping out of high school.

"If you drop out, you'll be S.C.O.D.S., never forget that!" he would say.

(Sucking Cocks On Davie Street) Imagine the fallout today if a teacher was caught giving that advice to students, haha!

We also cruised in my friend's van to throw eggs at people. One night we saw a huge group of hookers behind the Astoria pub, creeped up and saw two hookers brawling, it was so vicious it freaked out the 15 year old me, haha.

I had a great childhood up until I was about 11, where everything turned to shit during my parent's divorce. One of my fondest memories was going to the downtown Woodwards.

Christmas at the Woodwards downtown was like nothing you see today, they had these huge lego displays, and the whole store felt like a carnival. It was a real shopping experience, and from what I remember, people dressed up to go shopping. MG1, those soft-serve chocolate frosties in the basement were the pinnacle of my happiest moments as a child. Often my German grandmother would wander off with me while the rest of the family would shop, she'd buy me a frosty and we'd talk while people-watching.

One Christmas I remember they had this GIGANTIC lego spaceship in one of the windows of Woodwards. I wish there were some photos of it kicking around somewhere. As a child I remember Christmas at Woodwards was so magical.

We were invited to a Halloween party down there about 20 years ago. I remember it being mostly dark and lots of cubbyholes for the costumed evil ones to jump out at people. We followed three women through most of the tunnel and had a great time watching them scream and jump around as they were being scared by the actors.

The Lions Gate Bridge has a rich history. It was built after the Second Narrows Bridge (the original Second Narrows Bridge). Three freaking lanes........ back then, in 1900's, it was good enough. The bridge was owned by the Guiness family (brewing company). Later sold to the government. Toll of 25˘, which was a lot back in those days.

Anyone else remember how the Cambie Street bridge used to have wooden planks for the pedestrian path?

Right before they tore it down to build the new bridge, my parents took me for a walk over the bridge. A few of the wooden planks were missing on the walkway and you could see all the way down to the water. That old bridge was such a piece of shit, I wonder if any photos exist of it.

In my younger days, I used to be in a marching band. I remember crossing that bridge on a radars route. The organizers were somewhat worried about the amount of people watching the parade from the wooden walkway. Does anyone remember the old Georgia viaduct? Or the Fraser street bridge.

If memory serves me correctly, it was an electrical sub station. Not 100% sure, though. Wasn't there one on Vistoria Drive near Venables?

There are smaller ones all over the city.

The one on Broadway/Lougheed east of Boundary used to be one of hte biggest. A few buildings around there have been taken down and now is a compound for new cars.

And there is one on Hastings near Tempelton high school, across the street some dim sum restaurant.

The big station is still on the corner of Lougheed and Gilmore. The office building is gone and I believe it will eventually become the new home to an the Audi dealership.

Garden City lands are owned by the natives. There used to be a fisheries communications farm there with a dozen antennas sticking up into the air, but that was taken out in the early 2000s.

As for the DND Lands. The green building on the corner of No.4 and Alderbridge is an armoury, housing mainly the 12 Service Battalion, a corp of Military Police, a corp of Army Cadets and a Squadron of Air Cadets (655!). The land behind the armoury is mainly used as a training site and government land in case they ever need to expand. AFAIK there's no silo base there, and the 12 svc's primary function are fixing trucks and engineering work.

I hope they never develop that part of Richmond even though its vacant land.

They're building Wal-Mart next to it, with Garden City as congested as it is already; if they put some crazy development in the middle then there's a new "DO NOT GO THERE ON WEEKENDS OR AFTER 4PM" zone in town

I came to Vancouver from Victoria back in the mid-80's so most of my memories are of the Expo-era Vancouver. Back then I used to ride my bike everywhere! Living out by UBC (I graduated from Lord Byng), I saw many changes with local businesses, houses, schools and parks. Most of my memories of Broadway and Dunbar area revolve around the 7-11 at 10th and Alma, The Captains bargain store, Cheapskates, Hollywood theatre, The 'new' Safeway at MacDonald and all the new condos and construction at 25th and Dunbar area.

Back then it was a great time to grow up and watch the community develop. At the time I was one of the only poor kids in a rich kid school but really, it didn't matter.

I'm just throwing this out there, but does anyone know where the exact location is for the old Denman rink where the Vancouver Millionaires played in.
Just that with the Heritage classic happening today, they showed pictures of the old rink but there isn't much about where it was and what happened to it.
I know it is near the entrance to Stanley Park.

The arena was located on the northwest corner of the intersection of Denman and West Georgia Streets, the present site of Devonian Harbour Park, and just a short streetcar ride away from the Central Business District.

I cannot believe it. Dude is still there. I remember that family. I hung out there every day. I have to go say hi, before they close down.

I remember when the twins were born. So funny - he always looked like that. Hasn't changed a bit. The mom was a really nice lady and the dad was just as nice. I spent hours there reading the comics and buying freezies with the money I earned at the baseball park. Never got kicked out, since I made sure the pages stayed pristine. I know nothing is forever, but my memories of that place will always be 1080 sharp.

I'm teary eyed as I type this........... this story brings back all the good memories. The single older gents in the DTES who had a hand in raising me with their wisdom and kindness. Damn........... I was ever so lucky.

I think this is my favourite thread of all by far. I don't think I have much to add but this feels just like I was listening to my parents tell me their stories of growing up here. They came here around 1980 (separately haha, met here) and at this time of posting, I'm only 21. Later I'll ask them for more stories haha.

Now that I look back, discrimination still existed even from the school teachers themselves. Of course, as a kid I didn't know better, but now that I recall in Grade 1, the teacher had me in ESL, and reportedly told my mom at parent-teacher night that she "didn't know I could read so well" And that was in 2000 at John Henderson Annex (the one on E 54th Ave)

But on the brighter side, I remember so well that my grandma would take me shopping on Fraser St (from 49th to 42nd i guess), and on other times we would take the #8 down to Chinatown. I have a vague memory of the yellow paper transfers and the clear coin boxes on the buses. Watching the video above of the old New Flyer trolleys really brought back the feelings.

And the bags of milk. My parents had always bought jugs, but my grandma always bought the Dairyland bagged milk from Buy-Low-Foods until they stopped making them here. No one ever believes the 20-year old kid who claims that there used to be bagged milk in Vancouver. "Nuh-uh, only Ontario has it"

My dad and I used to bike every summer. I remember when they used to post up the signs in the summer, like "June is Bike Month" or "July is Bike Month". We used to live near Rupert Station, and I would say I was maybe around 7 or 8, so early 2000s, we would bike to Trout Lake. No bike lanes lol, although there were already established bike routes. Basically we would bike along Broadway, then turn at Slocan or Kaslo and take the bike route up Grandview Hwy N, then etc to Trout Lake. You see, even then we could safely bike on the road. It was Broadway for goodness sake. We kept right when we needed to, and the drivers weren't crazy. The other place we would bike is Stanley Park. We would park the car somewhere Pacific Ave and Burrard, then take the bike route and loop the whole Stanley Park. It was chill. I don't feel these sort of vibes anymore...

The only good time I had in school was Grade 2 at Sexsmith, my teacher was Ms Warner, and I would say she was one of the best teachers I've had. Granted that I don't have many memories of her, (don't even have a photo because she was away during the class photo) but I think what made her the best was that she gave us lots of hands on activities to do. Most of the other teachers I had thought I had ADHD or something because I took a longass time to do academic homework, but hey that's why I work on cars and not in an office ;D Actually one time we had some kind of art assignment, and a professional artist came and selected our drawings for an art mural. So, yeah. My drawing made it onto the wall at the Marpole Community Centre, and as far as I know, it's still there, but I havent been there for probably over ten years LOL. I guess I am a piece of Vancouver history!

Ah, the bagged milk. Came in three's. Wasn't the greatest idea in the world. Sometimes the bag would slide out of the container and make a mess. Sometimes, the bags were pretty tight and sliding them into the container was difficult. I remember those Dairyland 4 litre cartons that milk used to come in - actually it was a gallon, lol. My mom used them to store potting soil, seeds, and fertilizers in them.

ugh the bagged milk era. i also remember dairyland used to have home delivery service for their milk and other products until it was too cost prohibitive and is not common anymore. but those damn bags... i could never cut the corner of the bag just right so you either got a trickle or a huge dump all over the place. i think we still have one of those containers somewhere... used to use it for kitchen utensils.

I'm laughing at how the Lion's Gate bridge still carries the same 3 lanes to this day, that it did 50 years ago. To think how much this city's population was grown from half a century ago, and yet much of our roads, and infrastructure remains the same, meanwhile we're carrying some of the highest prices for real estate in the modern world.

It's very bizarre, and unfortunate. BC has always had the reputation in Canada as the "Wild West" when it comes to government corruption. It makes me really wonder how much tax payer money has been siphoned away to darker means, rather than improving the much needed infrastructure this city really requires. It's baffling to me.

Awesome thread;

A couple of years ago the Vancouver Archives had an open house and they were giving away some prints of theirs for free. I took this one and hung it up in our walk in closet:

Granville Street circa 1900:
https://searcharchives.vancouver.ca/uploads/r/null/1/0/1064995/e5fb9d77-12b8-4c79-be58-caf6b7dd7078-A51003.jpg

Vancouver was founded 14 years earlier. The "parade" in the picture, I was told, are local military recruits heading off to the Boer War. The teepees are barracks.

I'm laughing at how the Lion's Gate bridge still carries the same 3 lanes to this day, that it did 50 years ago. I've been living in the GTA for almost a year now and traffic is just as bad here, if not worse. I also lived near Montreal for 5 months last year and the traffic is terrible there too.

I've come to realize that there's only so much $$ you can spend on infrastructure on the 2nd largest (by landmass) country in the world using taxes collected from a population size less than that of the state of California....

That building (built in the 50's) was re-developed several times over the decades. Someone older and familiar with the area can confirm but previous research indicated it might have been some sort of mechanic/auto-related business. Originally, the building was a mix of small businesses with no major anchor tenant.

Actually, before Stong's left the area, it was originally located kitty corner during the 60-70s, where the 7-Eleven is now.

Owns the building, lives upstairs............. that’ll work. Have your cake and eat it, too. No connection to Lucky Bakery. Maybe the baker’s rent was too high and he’s opened up shop somewheres else. He seemed to like what he was doing. Maybe he works for someone else now. A really good friend of mine owned a stereo shop in Richmond. He was doing well, but he realized working for someone else made way more sense. Less headache. Let someone else worry about running the business.

Kingsgate used to have a Royal Bank which was my mom's main branch and I used to read her bank book (remember those?) to pass the time. OMG, OMG, OMG (just took a closer look at the photos again).............. remember I was telling you guys about this restaurant on Hastings Street that served the best Chow Fun on the planet? It was called the Phoenix Restaurant, so I thought. Cot dam, it was the name of the hotel above it. The food there was greasy as fuck and cockroaches added to the decor. Can anyone make out the name (chinese) on the round red sign? I don't know why, but I never stepped into the Ovaltine. Too "White," I guess............. the food, that is. And......... the parking in front. Imagine having to parallel park those vehicles that most likely didn't have power steering into tight spaces? No C-Lai's back then, gulolol. Plus, bumpers were actually bumpers.

LOL, the American.......... back in those days drinking establishments had to have a separate entrance for Men and Ladies. Something to do with keeping unattached men from unattached women. The Men's side was for men only, while the Ladies side was for women with husbands, escorts, and boyfriends. One of the reasons was to keep prostitutes out and to keep VD (STI) in check (during the war). This was a provincial law, not to be confused with the practice in other countries and in history (colonial).

And the LUX............ went there many times with my friends to watch Rock Hudson movies. My sister had a crush on that guy. She (we were in elementary school at the time) would pay for my friends and me to go watch them. Movies were like 25 cents back then.

The girls in snack bar.............. nuff said. Heinz soup for 35 cents......... waaaay too expensive. You can get Campbell's soup nowadays for 50 cents or less on sale. Mind you, they're not the same size or the concentrated type.

I was just thinking back to an early 2000's staple, Jive pool hall. It was on Broadway and Spruce, I believe. Big-ass warehouse area of pool tables, a little bar, some arcade games. Up until 2003 or 2004, he'd let people smoke inside! Obviously this was very contrary to the bylaws, but that went on forever and nobody said anything, and TBH it's a fucking pool hall, if you don't like it, then leave.

His only rule was if you smoked at your table, use an ash tray. And if you're going to drink, you had to drink at the bar area.

He had Napster up and people could download and play songs.

Place is long gone, and in its place is some cookie cutter condo building.

Those ‘terminal city’ pictures are great. It’s strange to me that the first comment on that page talks about disappointment with lack of multiculturalism. I see what looks like an East Indian girl, an Asian lady, and a Chinese store with 2 Chinese men standing in front of it. Also, many of the Caucasian people look Italian (probably first or second generation immigrants), which is a very different culture from my caucasian immigrant parents. Talk about lack of cultural awareness.

Very cool!
Just to add a little to this, I was taught that the viaducts were an experiment in how they proposed to build the highway. Federal funding allowed for a km of elevated highway which they used to build the viaducts. Ideas changed in the late 60's and the public was now against a highway running through Vancouver. So they turfed the plans and ran with the viaduct as a way into the DT core.

This is eerily reminiscent of the Deas Island tunnel/bridge fiasco. In 50 years our grandkids could be talking about how they had a plan for the crossing, and never went through with it.

Anyone remember what restaurant was at the space where Kissa Tanto currently occupies? Vaguely remember going there as a kid in the early 90s.

No idea about that place.
But we used to go to the Green Door Chinese restaurant in the late 70's/early 80's. I remember it being just outside of an alley in the DTES. Back before that area got stabby and scary. It was the ultimate greasy spoon Chinese restaurant, and a treat for us as we didn't have much money back then.

FailFish

Unfortunately, the viaduct was also a means to displace Vancouver's black population at the time.

that is a very cool read

Also,
Beginning in 1967, the City of Vancouver began leveling the western half of Hogan’s Alley to construct an interurban freeway through Hogan’s Alley and Chinatown. The freeway was ultimately stopped, but construction of the first phase – the Georgia viaduct – was completed in 1971. In the process, the western end of Hogan’s Alley was expropriated and several blocks of houses were demolished.

That looks like no.4 and st edwards used to connect underneath hwy99. Would've been nice if they kept that....

i think it looks more like a level-crossing with stop signs or the such.
doesn't look deep enough to be an underpass...
i think it's the optical illusion from the darkness of the through lanes of HWY99, because the shoulders are about as light as the cross st

It seems like every fricken alley in the DTES has a nickname.............

Shanghai Alley, Blood Alley, Hogan's Heroes, Canton Alley, etc.

Then, there's MG1 Alley. It's quite famous now that Deadpool came out. The apartment dude was in was the very same MG1 grew up in. I couldn't believe it when my son told me of this. Went out and bought the DVD. Sure enough, the same brick wall. I don't think the actual room itself was even shot on location. It was too clean to be the same one, lol. Dead, pun intended, giveaway was..........no cockroaches or mice in the movie. Like WTF? That's what made that place so special.

Anyway, carry on carrying on.

Don't forget dead man's alley. Located between Florence nightingale and Tupper. Probably not terribly famous but those from the area might remember it.
Had to be one of the steepest alleys you could fly your kuwahara down sans brakes.

Bumping this thread..........

For some weird reason, I decided to drive along Kingsay back to Burnaby. I don't like driving that way, but damn. Place has changed so much. Thank god, Dad Tung is still there. Hoping it's still a decent place to eat. Some older buildings I recognized. Consumers Distributing. Anyone remember them? Then the old Mopac which is now Midland Liquidators. Does anyone remember what Mopac was called before they became Mopac? And that Chinese restaurant on the corner of Kingsway and Slocan? Dragon Inn, along with Wally's.

I used to live on Clarke and 24th, two blocks south of consumers. Was born in that house actually. Mr sub, the Video Nest. Hoy's Wonton is still there, I believe. Same with triangle market..I think. Been awhile since I rolled through.
As kids we'd head into consumers and dig through the catalogs just to browse. Never bought anything. Don't know why but we thought it was fun.
Fields just down the street where mom used to buy our Lobo and Excalibur shoes. Anybody remember those? They were probably the cheapest shoes you could possibly find. The plastic soles were so hard it would take weeks to break them in haha.

I remember as a kid my dad taking us all the way to Kingsway even though we lived in Surrey just to have a burger lol.

For some reason what I remember most of that place was a poster inside of a kid looking at a bunch of ice cream flavors and the tag line of "Decisions decisions" on it lol.

So many memories going to Wally's after school. Deluxe Chuckwagon. Pinball machines on the side.

The later iterations never quite captured the same feeling as the Kingsway location.

Wally's opened in 1962, I just stumbled upon a burger place here the other day that started in 1967 that I want to give a try.

I remember Best in Town -- A Chinese restaurant used to be across the street from the Wally's. We'd head there after the club at 3/4AM to eat and slam back beers poured in plastic cups.

Had a friend shot at through the window at that restaurant too, back when we were just out of high school.

Oh, the good ol' days.

I remember Lobo shoes! I had a few pairs as a kid. They were shit quality but I loved them just cause they were brand new lol. I had a lot of hand me downs as a kid.
My mom would buy a couple pairs a few sizes up, and I used to pull them out from under her bed so I could daydream about when I could fit them.

The BJ BMW dealership use to be a some bakery warehouse. My mind is telling me it was the brand with the little girl on it. Was it Weston bakeries?

Bump?

Well, I was just going through the thread........... started so long ago. LOL.

Anyway, got the answer for you.

The girl on the logo was a blonde with curly hair. Sunbeam bread. It was the best sliced bread you could get back then. I remember how soft it was. Bacon and egg sandwich using Sunbeam bread was heaven. I'm pretty sure it was Weston Bakery that made Sunbeam for Western Canada.

Nick's is still on Commercial drive. I go there for lunch with customers/suppliers once every few months.

Little Billy's was on Nanimo and 2nd. That place has changed owners/restaurant names quite a few times. Now it is called Jaguar's or something like that and they serve chinese food and BBT.

Not too sure about Plum Blossum.

There's a Little Billies in my neighbourhood now. Hastings and Sperling. I could have sworn they used to also be at 5000 Kingsway Plaza at one time or another.

I did. Wasn't the best school haha. Had some fond memories. Apparently it's one of the lowest ranked school in Vancouver. Anyway, speaking of Macdonald elementary. I heard it's like 80% native now. My buddy's sister goes there and one time she got lice from one of the kids. Pretty funny stuff. On one of her report cards. It states that she did well in some aboriginal dances. That's all that was said. haha

Templeton ranked one of the lowest? Is that why a team from Templeton took first place in the provincial junior Reach for the Top competition, beating out private schools?

And top ten in the senior national championships........

I remember when I lived nearby in the early 90's getting on/off the 95 bus in front and going to convenience store that was also there.

Moved out of that area early 2000's, apparently their history page says a fire took out the complex in mid 2000s.

They had a subscription service for Japanese magazines and books that was pretty darn good. Now you have to go through OCS Canada, which is actually just as good.
