it's okay CD. Your camera doesn't support EF-S lenses. Who is it to blame? :D

Don't matter to me if it's crop or not. Better for zoom lenses anyway.
As far as the noise goes, it's supposed to be much much better at higher ISO than 50D.
Definately thinking of getting this over the 5D. I don't need the full frame really. And this is gonna be a good $1,000 - $1,500 less than 5D. Plus I'll probably sell my 40D to cover at least 1/3 or the cost. Sounds like a good deal to me :) Can't wait till it comes out :D

So is this a replacement or what?
niforpix
09-01-2009, 04:46 PM
I don't think this would be a replacement. It's in between 50D and 5D for people who wants HD video but don't need full frame and can't afford to shell out extra $1,500, like myself :p
skyxx
09-01-2009, 04:51 PM
But the thing is it's only like a couple hundred more compared to the 50D.

It seems like they've gotten rid of the banding issues that plague the 5D mkII & 50D.

I was reading that this is a new line, between the 50D and 5DmkII... So it's not replacing anything.
$1699 for the body for what this camera has is a good deal.

Wireless flash control (years behind Nikon, but finally..)
Erm, Minolta was the first company to introduce wireless flash with the 7xi body in 1991. It took Nikon 10 years to catch up, and it's still not as user friendly as the old Minolta system.
I would buy this camera if only canon would get rid of their hideous ergonomics.

Millions of people world wide use Canon SLR's without complaint, maybe its not the camera...
Senna4ever
09-02-2009, 09:37 AM
Of course not...it's my personal preference, but a lot of pros also don't like canon's ergonomics. They use the canon system because of the 5D mkII and some of the lenses that have no current Nikon equivalent.

uhh...not exactly a "couple" hundred dollars more than the 50D:
Henrys:
50D (body): $1299
7D (body): $2099
difference is $800!

I also have a 40D and I am also very tempted to sell it to buy the 7D...but i calculated it will still cost at least $1000 to upgrade assuming I buy this from the US. That's going to burn a deep hole in my pocket. I might hold off for now.
not worth it if you have a 30/40/50D and upgrade to the 7D.
7D is great and I would love to have one too, but just got my 50D just 6 months ago... the next one I'd get would definitely be a FF (5D MK3 or 4 or something).
For that $1000 to shell out to upgrade the body? I'd just get the 35mm f1.4L that I have been longing for..
niforpix
09-03-2009, 10:29 AM
I have a 40D so there is absolutely no point for me to upgrade to a 50D and I'm not gonna spend extra 1500$ to upgrade to a 5D vs 7D. Besides I get my stuff at cost so I save a bunch of cash right there. So it's a pretty sweet deal.

With the current exchange rate (1.08), the true cost if purchased from the US is actually $1836 CDN...so you save like $300 (or more depending on if you declare it ;))
Quick question...if you already have a 40D/50D and you can upgrade to the 7D or 5D for approximately the same price, which would you go for? Considering that the 7D ups the 5D in terms of features other than not being full frame and more noise.

The AF on this camera really makes it interesting for me since i like to do alot of bird photography and nature. I'm assuming this would be a good upgrade from a 40D in that regard? How much better is the AF on a 1D body than the 7D? I was thinking the 7D, a 1.4X, and a 500mm F4IS would be a pretty good birding/nature combo. Would love to get a 1D MKIII tho. Input?
Senna4ever
09-29-2009, 08:52 PM
So I used a 7D today after work. It is a bit noisier than the 5DmkII, but the banding of the noise has been eliminated. AF seems to be accurate (we put a 24mm f1.4 on it), but probably doesn't come close to a 1Ds mkIII in speed. Metering seems to be good, too. I don't think you'd need to put a 1.4x extender if you're using a 500mm f4.

How does the AF compare to the Nikon D300s? I would assume that the Nikon should still be better since it has the D3/D3x/D700's AF module in there.

I assume the AF is not as good as the Nikons, but it's pretty quick. I am testing it out tonight, and I just got back from taking some night shots with the 7D, so I'll try to post some pics later. I'm going to head out again for some shots. The noise is much nicer looking than the 5DmkII - much easier to get rid of with noise reduction. Dare I say Nikon-like?

I was at Broadway Camera yesterday (Broadway location) and they have the 7D body in stock. I played with it briefly and it does feel a tiny bit heavier than my 50D.
Very nice camera though..but the body is selling for $2100 CAD before taxes....ouch!

$1699usd x exchange rate south of the border
$2099cdn + 12% tax in Canada
easily save $400-$500 in the states....
dilemma,... hmm
ps: as previously mentioned,.. the 28-135 is showing up on all US websites, but the 18-135 is showing up on all canadian websites... reason behind this?

yup, definately cheaper, and you don't get charged duty for camera stuff either. however, i would be worried about a warranty...just incase.
still waiting to see reviews on the 18-135. sounds like it could be a great walk around range

I got mine at Futureshop. They gave me 12% off on it even though it wasn't on sale because all the other SLRs were on sale.
I know I shouldn't have done this, but I checked for hot pixels on the sensor and found one red pixel that shows up even at 1/10 sec at ISO 1250. Do you have any (or anyone else)?
Just want a general idea if this is within normal limits. My 40D had 4 hot pixels but they didn't show up until shutter speed was >2 sec.
Should I exchange it or send it to Canon?

I'm really amazed at the focus tracking of the 7D, it may be as good or better than the 1Ds mkIII. The exposure system is very accurate, it wasn't fooled by a bird in flight that was backlit, a situation that would 100% fool the 1Ds mkIII, and many other cameras.

went to Futureshop today to exchange my 7D due to 6 persistant hot pixels. The have a new promo this weekend where you get a $100 GC with purchase of a 7D. So i mentioned I just got mine last week and they gave it to me :)
Total now for the 7D is $1749 plus taxes :) (i think i probably got the best deal in Canada...except probably for you guys who work at a camera store :P)
I also exchanged it with a 7D with less hot sensor pixels. With no in body noise reduction, I get 4 hot pixels (30" ISO 6400), but 0 hot pixels when I turn on noise reduction. My previous one had 1 hot pixels even at 1/40" ISO 1250 and noise reduction on.
But the one I exchanged to already had >1500 shots :( and the battery/charger/manual bags were opened. Likely a return although the sales rep claims it never left the store. Oh well. I'm satisified with this one.

Alright here is my dilemma. I want a good birding camera. What would you do? Spend more money on a 1d mk3 or a bit less and get a 7d. I really like the weather sealing on the 1d, and the auto focus and fps is awesome! Which one would you take? 1d mk3 or 7d for a birding camera? A 500mm F4L would be attached to the camera body. Of which i don't have yet but soon.
niforpix
10-18-2009, 05:49 PM
I would definately go with the 7D (and that's not just because I have one). It costs less, does 8fps (only 2fps less than 1D MKIII), plus it's 18MP vs 10PM. You can crop the pics even more if needed. And I'd put the $$ difference towards the new lens.

I also agree with 7D
Pros of 7D
-Also have weather sealing
-1.6x crop turns 500mm into a 800mm!
-8fps close enough to 10fps
-100% viewfinder..composing is more satisfying
-18 MP vs 10MP...can crop more, requiring less zoom
-All this for CHEAPER!

Everybody complaining in the 1D Mark IV comment thread that there won't be any more video firmware updates for the 5D Mark II is kinda wrong: Canon is enabling the 24fps and 25fps 1080p video recording that's found on the 7D and 1D Mark IV, bringing it about up to par. Update's due sometime next year, though no firmware switcheroo's gonna deliver the 1DMkIV's low-light sensitivity. [Planet 5D via Canon Rumors]

i have a Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 right now, but i'm tryin to think whether or not the extra reach and the IS would be worth it.... can't afford the bloody 18-55 f2.8. might look into the new tamron EF-S mount with VC tho.

Not really insulting it. I know it's a great lens. But it's also $200 bucks more. So if one doesn't care to have a f2.8 vs f3.5 and wants that extra reach, than 15-85 is the way to go :)

No, it isn't. The Canon 17-55 isn't bad, but the 15-85 is sharper overall, especially in the corners. The one area where Canon is lacking compared to Nikon is the wide to tele zoom lenses.

The 17-55 is also f2.8 constant, while the 15-85 is 3.5-5.6 through it's range.
85mm and f5.6 does not make for good low-light performance. I would rather have 55mm and f2.8 and crop.

I'm don't know what your source is but that is not true according to these reviews:
15-85: http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/465-canon_1585_3556is?start=1
17-55: http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/425-canon_1755_28is_50d?start=1
The 17-55 is consistently sharper (at center and corners) than the 15-85 looking at the MTF charts even at F2.8 (except at 50mm). But when stopped down to F4, it is sharper at all focal lengths from 17-55

My source is my first hand experience, and from the examples I've seen, The 15-85 is sharper overall, but the 17-55 does have the advantage of a fast, constant aperture. The copy of the 17-55 I tried was shit compared to the copy of the 15-85 we have, and definitely worse (not by much) than the Nikon 17-55 f2.8. Would I use the 15-85 professionally? Makes no sense? The whole EF-S thing is dumb. Why not just make it an EF lens so it's compliant across the range of cameras. If they want to keep it "affordable" which the EF-S range is suppose to cater to, then just make it non-L which it is already.
Why does my comment make no sense?

This is what I wanted to post yesterday:
http://www.vimeo.com/7508466
My very first attempt at cinematography. I'm loving the Canon 7D. I never realized how much I enjoy videography until now :). The editing took me a good 12 hrs though! and that is not including trying to figure what program to use and how to edit the footages (probably another 12 hrs). Video is a lot more time consuming than photos.
Stats:
Recorded with Canon 7D and built-in mic (really crappy audio) and Canon 17-55mm F2.8 IS. Video was edited on Pinnacle Studio 14 HD directly, with no conversions or proxies necessary. This program is able to edit .mov footages with no problems unlike Vegas or Premiere Pro.
Can anyone recommend a decent external microphone that won't break my wallet?and where can I get one? (preferably in Vancouver). I read that the Rode Stereo Videomic is pretty good but it costs $250 US.

Check out Provision (http://www.provisionvideo.com) @ 143 West 3rd Avenue, 604.876.0940. They have a decent Sennheiser mic for about $200, and I think a RODE Stereo Video Mic for $250. If you can, get the RODE mic with the suspension system, as it will make a huge difference in reducing noise. Also get a Dead Kitten/Dead Cat for the mic to reduce wind noise if you're going to be outside.

Thanks for the tip. If I can get the Rode Stereo Videomic for $250CDN, I just might get that. It's suppose to come with a dead kitten.
Any personal experience with this microphone on the 5Dii or 7d?

I just checked Vistek, and they're selling the RODE mic I saw at Provision for $439, so I guess I was wrong. It must be around that price. No experience using it - I went to Provision to inquire about the various mics they have that can be mounted on a DSLR and they recommended me that one and a few others.

I've read reviews about these two on the net. The rode is better. But at $439, it is about 2x more than the US price after taxes! The Sennheiser is mono only and causes a lot of noise on the 5Dii. I'll call Provision tomorrow. Hopefully you saw correctly.

Maybe rent one for the weekend to see if you like it? Don't read too much into internet reviews...get the one that is right for you. It's pretty cheap, about $25/day, and your rental costs can go towards a purchase, I think. The guys at Provision are really nice people, and they know their stuff.

If the T1i is anything like the 50D, then the 7D will be an improvement at ISO 800+, but I'm not sure if it's worth $1000. Personally, I'd get the Tokina.
ok thnx. maybe i'll wait till the 7D prices come down, but then the t1i price will come down lol

A co-worker has written a mind-numbingly thorough review of the 7D & 15-85mm.

I've done a lot of research this week on audio and microphones (more than a healthy amount) and I have narrowed down the choices to the following:
1) Rode (mono) videomic - good for dialogue and drowning out ambience
2) Rod stereo videomic - good for music, live performance, ambience sounds
3) Zoom H4N field recorder (not a microphone) - records stereo and can be placed next to the sound source to record audio separately and then syncing with video in post-edit. Also read that can attach a cord from the line-out to the mic input on the camera and get a direct recording so negating the need to sync the audio.
I think 3) is the best choice as you get the best of both worlds: place the recorder next to the sound source for dialogue and limiting ambience or plug it to the camera to record live performances, etc...
In terms of cost, 3) is the most expensive, then 2), then 1)....the Zoom H4N is about $400 CDN or $300 US
