| Can my friend get EI?
k, so a friend of mine recently got pretty much fucked by the recent budget that was released
He worked for the Vancouver school board as a "Casual laborer" i guess, he was on there since june and right when the budget came out yesterday, the VSB gave papers to all their casual employee's giving them 5 days notice
Now.. he made decent money there, around $20 an hour
but the problem is that he also works for Joey's in coquitlam there, so technically he's still employed part-time, but if he was to work 40 hours a week at joeys, he wouldnt even make 1/2 the check he was making at the VSB
although he is still employed taking advantage of that EI money would probably be in his best interest over grinding it out at the resturant, but is he fucked since he has the second job now? or is there any way he can get EI by quitting joeys etc?

As far as I know E.I is only entitled for those who have no job. You said your friend has a part time job which still means he's employed. Don't know the the exact details but I'm pretty sure your friend is not eligible for E.I

You didn't say how many hours he's worked in the last year. That would determine his eligability and the amount.
Let's say for arguments sake he's eligable for the maximum amount - $864 every 2 weeks.
If he makes close to that working at Joey's, it's up to him if he wants to collect and do nothing or work 40hrs/week and make the same amount.
If he works at Joey's and makes $500 in a 2 week period, while on EI, they will top him up the other $364. He MUST claim any income. If EI finds out he didn't claim and collected from them, he'll be screwed.
While he's on EI (if not working), he has to be available for work Mon-Fri. for the period he's claiming. This means if they find out he went to Mexico while he shoud've been looking for a job, he's gonna get screwed.

He could potentially still get EI if the VSB job is his main source of income and his main job. he'd need to supply the EI office with the ROE from Joey's as well. I'm not sure how much he makes at VSB as a casual labourer, but while on EI, you can still work part time and earn up to $50 or 25% of your weekly benefits (whichever is higher). So if he is getting the max EI, $447, he'd be able to earn a quarter of that at his part time job. Anything over that amount gets deducted from the weekly EI cheque.
So the main thing is to show that the VSB job is the main job and Joey's only a side job.
I looked into this a couple years back cause I was almost in the same situation as well. I had a full time contract that was expiring and my part time job was only about 15 hours a week tho, and i would have been eligible for EI if my contract didn't get extended at the last minute. Again, everything needs to be reported. Good Luck!

any previous work hours can be counted towards the required hours if the vsb job doesn't have enough.

thanks alot for all the info guys ill forward it to him | It's based on hours worked not length of employment. If he has enough hours total including working another job before that one he may or may not be eligible.

Not sure if he's eligible, but if he was, he's still entitled to work a part time job. He can earn up to 40% on top of his EI payment. Anything above that and the amount will be deducted from EI.

having enough hours is 1 thing, but "willing and available" to work is another thing.
your frd can still possibly get EI, but too many unknown factors here, just tell him/her go apply and he/she will find out, it is better to do it than guessing it here.
I actually work with EI everyday so i know it is possible; however, I can discuss real life cases here.
cheers
