I don't understand what it's about, but apparently, everyone's been able to get Windows 7 for $19.

I was going to post this last weekend. Yup its confirmed to work. I tried it myself. You register on ACM and pay the 19$ fee for membership. And then once they process your payment you're allowed to "Opt in" for the MSDNAA access. Once you're in you have access to 4 versions of Win 7, Vista, XP SP3 etc. ALl of which you DL the iso and they give you a key. As for reinstalling later on the same PC, im not too sure as I heard they were one time use keys.

BTW for Windows 7 you get:

X86 Windows 7 English
X86 WIndows 7 French
X64 WIndows 7 English
X64 WIndows 7 French

Great deal in my books.

The thing is, I am confused about how many keys they give you. The Op said they provide 2 licenses, but everyone is downloading 4 copies of Windows.

Also, can you download 4 Windows 7 x86?

each key i was able to use it on 2 computer before the need to call in to ms and activate manually (explain why i am installing it for the 3rd, 4th, 5th time). i was able to use one key for 5 installs so far.

you get 4 keys. you can probably do 5x4 installs = 20 installs. it's just that you will have to convince the ms csr that you are not pirating.

No, essentialy those 4 I listed are the ones you can DL. And they give you 1 key for each copy. They provide 2 copies for a key on the same platform (X86 or X64) since they give you french and english versions which you can basically change the language once you install.

trd2343

So you can change the language from French to English once you installed it with the French x64/86?

What information did you give them at sign up? I'm opting to put generic names and address....
It also asked do I belong to ACM Student Chapter....

and Thanks!

StylinRed

so are we able to download any software they offer? or are we just allowed the choice of 1 (example winxp only or winvista only or windows7 only)

way2quik
09-08-2009, 07:20 PM
any software available on the site. ex. XP Pro, XP Pro w/ SP1, XP Pro w/ SP... etc. 7 Pro, 7Pro French Windows Home Server.... etc, there is no Vista Home Premium though. I wish there was, not that it matters anymore, but still.

there will be NO MS Office, not now not in the future.

There are 4 keys to Windows 7 as already mentioned above: 7 Pro (x86 and x64) and 7 Pro French (x86, x64) - a total of 4 keys interchangeable between the four versions. I haven't tried, but I believe it's already confirmed over at RFD.

I don't remember if I had to input my student #, but is currently required to do so.

From RFD, ACM, on Sept 09, began asking for student information. I guess all those non-students got lucky with the offer and ACM tightened up.

There is a total of 6 keys now. 2 chinese (simplified, x86 and x64) were added.

I know it's not OK to sign up if you're not a student.

But what if you were a student but not in any computer related program?

StylinRed

reamemiya there's an option for "other" in the degree choices, even business.. so i doubt its a concern

they wanted my student id and the faculty advisors name... i cant find their name for the life of me so i just put in the name of the department head

still dont have an option to "opt-in" though

I'm not sure about this method, but there isn't a mention that you have to be a student.

After reading the updates from RFD, you do need to be a student (or at least you need to provide your student number and faculty advisor's name).

09-09-2009, 09:44 PM
so you get 4 keys? x2 install on each key?

Can you use more than 1 key for Windows 7?

Hmm...does anyone know when this offer expires? I'm tempted

way2quik
09-09-2009, 11:23 PM
one license per key.
It's stated being 2 license because 32bit and 64bit W7 gives you a unique key.
If you were to buy W7 OEM/Retail, you have the choice of installing either with one cdkey. The site, however, provides you with two cdkeys, one for each version. Hence.. two license.

And it's 6 keys. ;)

That's a great encouragement :)

How did they verify whether you're student or not? I've read a post where ACM actually sent an email to the member's faculty advisor. I don't know if my faculty advisor will respond to this kind of stuff.

From what I have read on RFD, they will not be releasing Ultimate RTM on MSDN. Since it's been confirmed that the keys are only tied to versions (Professional, Home, etc.), maybe you can find a traditional Chinese Win7 Professional and try use the keys on that?

SkinnyPupp, is your sister in highschool? I have a sister still in highschool and I am wondering how did it work out for you. I'm just assuming because your sister's young, that's why you helped her with it.

Has anyone figure out how to properly share a folder in Windows 7?

I tried turning on sharing for the Public folder in Advanced sharing properties, but it automatically grants access to my own user folder as well, meaning a user from another computer can access my person files.

In XP, it was just right clicking and sharing the Shared folder.

way2quik
09-15-2009, 07:01 PM
Right Click folder > Sharing > Share > Everyone > OK/Share.

However, if all your computers have W7, share as Homegroup, and have your other W7 computers enter the same password.

I think we need to come to realize this is actually wrong. This is stealing. A crime. Why?

Upon payment, ACM has agreed to provide us with copies of Windows 7. That's the term. Before we pay, ACM is free to change the term to whatever it likes, such as taking Windows 7 out. BUT, after we have paid, our money become theirs, and whatever ACM has agreed on for our money is ours, and that is Windows 7. I have agreed to pay ACM $20, and ACM has agreed to give me Windows 7 for my $20. Now ACM decided it doesn't want to do that and takes it back. That's stealing.

Why am I ranting? Because I took my time and didn't get any keys :(

I'm going to call ACM up.

chopchop
09-16-2009, 11:55 PM
^I think the $20 is just the membership fee for ACM. To be able to download Windows 7 requires you to opt and get accepted into the program. Anyhow, it sucks that they no longer have them :(

SkinnyPupp
09-17-2009, 12:48 AM
Membership of ACM gets you MSDNAA access, not "copies of Windows 7". Nobody is "stealing" anything from you. You still have MSDNAA, but they no longer offer Windows 7.
