Panasonic Plasmas are the best put the smallest size for a Plasma would be 42 inch.
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...0121047&catid=

Samsung would be #2 and is available in 40 inch sizes for LCD's.

Can't go wrong with Samsung LCD's.

Samsung for LCD's, Panasonic for Plasma's.

I run into sony 40" today at futureshop.

Sony 40" :

Samsung 40" :

I'm thinking between these too right now. I wonder which one is better since the price range is very close.

^ neither
for $1000 you should be looking for ~$1200 120hz ones and try to bargain them down to your $1k or wait for a sale but you seem to want it asap

I'm running a 37" Vizio 1080P 120hz panel. I would've gone bigger, but 37 was the biggest I could fit without rolling my back windows down, on the drive back from California. I didn't want to take it out of the box, either.

Vizio's worth looking into. I was at Costco, Frys, Microcenter, etc. while I was on vacation, and I looked at the various displays in terms of colour reproduction, brightness, contrast, sharpness, etc. and Vizio was actually better than the Panasonic LCD, and had nicer tones than the Samsung it was beside, when I was looking.

If you've got a Costco membership, give them a look, since you get the extra year warranty free.
