hey guys,

looking to sell a collection of (probably very) valuable comics. things like the original xmen, spiderman, hulk, dare devil, etc.

what's a good place to sell? i'd rather have cash for a new engine :)

TIA!

ebay? Way larger market.

i was thinking about that but then i've never sold anything on ebay before so i don't exactly have a seller's reputation estabilished yet.

It's not so bad. I started off with zero and ended up with 60 stars at the end of the month. You DO sell, eventually. However, what stopped me was all the effing fees they charge. Fees for selling shit and fees for using PayPal etc, etc.

However, they might move a lot faster on eBay than on CraigsList.

worst case scenario, try a local comic shop.

make a list of what you have and see what they may offer you. some however may laugh in your face.
man maybe i should look into doing this too. i have several thousand comics....

i can see 2 advantages for ebay: larger market, free postings for new sellers.

down the road it does get expensive as mentioned.

i was thinking of local comic shops but i don't even know where to begin. i hardly think they'd laugh at Uncanny Xmen Issue #1 :) this alone (if it was mint, which of course it isn't, was $10,000 value back in 1996).

El Bastardo: the list will be quite long, i'll work on it this week.

IMO a better option is a really large comic forum with a classified section. No ebay fees, and an equally large consumer base

most comic collectors prefer those comics that have been valued and graded and shoved in those hard plastic cases with the grading stamped up top (cant remember what they're called)

but i remember they charge crazy fees especially if its a valuable comic i think they charge a percentage of its worth

but they sell a lot easier and better $$$ wise

but anyhow like said above id make a list and send in the presumably more valuable ones in to get graded and then sell them on some comic book forums first before going to ebay

uncanny xmen 1! crazy its not a reprint is it? :)

i used to have a great collection of valuable old comics and as a kid i spilled my cup of milk all over them -_- (they weren't in bags i had em all out to play with)

I have Spiderman #1 signed by Todd McFarlane...is that worth anything? I have a pretty big collection from the 80's and 90's, like the death of Superman & Superboy, the original Transformers, Spawn #1-10, etc...

Oh, I wish my dad hadn't thrown away his collection of comics and sports cards in the 60's. He apparently had a large collection of Superman, Batman & Plasticman comics, baseball and hockey cards. He remembers having cards of the big names like Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Gordie Howe, Maurice Richard AND he distinctly recalls having a Mickey Mantle rookie card....all trashed.

i used to have Transformers #1 and Wolverine #1 (of 4) i got a shitload of old Uncanny Xmen from the 70's. i have to say i loved reading the old stories. newer comics seem to focus on big tits, art, and fights, not much character development or plot. I blame Image comics. I did like W.i.l.d.c.a.t.s. tho

there are comic pricing guides available.

I have Spiderman #1 signed by Todd McFarlane...is that worth anything?

Signed comics only have value if the signature can be authenticated. If not, the comic will have a lower value than a non-signed comic of similar condition because it has been defaced.

heh heh good luck

I got offered pennies for my comics at local comic shops... I have 10,000+ comics mainly from 70's and 90's.

I think your best bet really is Ebay. Even on Ebay it seems like comics sell way below value. Like $1 an issue.

Local shops won't offer you much because the market locally is pretty dead.

Ebay seems to be the best bet, but instead of pennies you get a couple dollars.

Hence why I still have all my 10,000+ comics. Wasn't worth selling it.

Hell I'd even take $1 per comic. LOL

i wouldn't sell my shit for $1/each, that's ridiculous! apparently there's more to the collection than i thought... another box to sort through. i knew the collection wasn't complete when i was sorting it out!

and yes, i can understand local shops not offering much. but, IF i were to sell it to them cheap, they'd just turn around and sell it for $50-$500 each now wouldn't they? :P

shipping 30-40lbs worth of comics ain't gonna be cheap either!

other than appraising it, what else is included? do they seal it up nicely for you too?

If you can wait, hold on to them till the economy gets better. I noticed goods that are collectibles are going for less now than before.

Not a lot of disposable income nowadays if you are reaching for the American market.

they seal it in a hard plastic casing which doesn't secrete acid or something like poly-bags and they place some sort of film between the cover pages so that nothing will leak onto the comic pages, etc and they provide an increased sense of insurance to buyers when they see its been graded/protected by the cgc

but i would only send in the really old ones that you're sure are worth a nice $$ since they do charge per-copy

i remember going to a Liquidation world and they had a whole isle full of like ancient comics from the 30's-80s for like $.50 i spents hours and hours going through it and buying the best ones ;) they were in like-new condition too

hmmm icic that's very interesting but i wonder how much they charge per issue. it's unfortunate most of my more valuable and notable comics aren't in mint condition. otherwise, i'd probably do this in a heartbeat.

Preemo

By the time you get your graded comics back, you will be in so much debt in terms of shipping charges! LOL! Those things are heavy! It's heavy duty plastic, air tight, and almost indestructible! Well ... they can crack. But ... they are heavy duty! They are practically meant to be archived and never be opened again.

However, if anyone has "The Goon" from Dark Horse in good condition issues 1-2something, I'll buy them. =D

spoon.ek9
09-12-2009, 10:47 AM
that would only be true if i shipped every last comic i have on that list hah. which, of course, i wouldn't.

if anyone wants to buy the lot now, just pm me with an offer. i MIGHT just let it go quickly.
