The Ares I development motor, or DM-1, will be tested at Alliant Techsystem's (ATK) test stand in Promontory, Utah on August 27. With a magnificent flash of light the 154-foot solid rocket motor will come to life, producing heat two-thirds the temperature of the sun and 3.6 million pounds of thrust from its 12-foot diameter cylinder.
damn
NASA's Ares rockets, named for the Greek god associated with Mars, will return humans to the moon and later take them to Mars and other destinations.

in comparison, the saturn 5 rocket had 7.823 million pounds of thrust. over twice as much as this badboy. You forgot to mention the Saturn 5 had five F1 engines producing this thrust, so each single engine was actually only slightly more than 1.5 million pounds of thrust, less than half of this engine.

^ Not to mention this is a solid fuel booster, and the F-1's were liquid fuel.
The F-1's were the most powerful liquid fueled rocket motors ever put in service.
