Has anyone else got the yellow light of death?
Mine died last night. I was wondering if you had success getting it fixed from somewhere and for how much.
I called sony and they want me to pay them $169 plus tax.
If you are out of warranty, look up on google.
There's a guide that teach you how to fix it. It's not guaranteed to work, but you could at least try.

i wouldn't take a risk fixing it yourself, could make the problem worse than it already is

from what I have read, you can try fixing it, just use a bit of liquid flux and a heat gun, protect the other components with tin foil. there are tutorials everywhere, a guy just fixed his in the PS3 thread. Sony is also supposed to be fairly lenient when it comes to warranties as well. If all that scares you then I'd say sell it on ebay as a YLOD PS3 or part it out, $169 plus tax plus shipping and you're nearly at a new PS3...

$35 bux?

well it takes like no effort... I was charging $50 to fix 360's, not many people at that price, so I dropped it to $30, lots of hits meow. then again everyone in this town (Thunder Bay) is cheap as fuck.

I was talking to a sony store employee and he told me PS3 can only be sent to east for repair. I mentioned the Sony service center in Coquitlam and he told me they don't take PS3 there. not sure if it's true.
Never seen it, but my first 80GB PS (with software backward compatibility) died within a week that the blu-ray drive won't read anything.

wtf happened to the days of leaving an N64 or PS2 on for days/weeks at a time and working the same way it did out of the box up until you tossed it away :(
underscore
10-10-2009, 09:04 AM
man WHY would you throw away an N64? Mario Kart dude! come one!
that said those things really weren't too powerful. they weren't drawing tonnes of power at lightening speed through super thin wires and requiring complex cooling setups. hell does an N64 even have a fan?

I did the YLOD fix a while back...didn't work :( got a defunct ps3 sitting in the back of my closet now... Really seems like a waste... How much can I get for the parts? Not gonna pay $150 for repair...doesn't make sense.
smoothie.
01-04-2011, 02:41 PM
what is the YLOD?
the board? overheated cpu/gpu? laser?
My friend bought a new ps3 to replace his YLOD'd fat boy, but wants the saved games. I didnt dare initialize the drive on windows, in risk of losing the booter, but my ps3 wouldnt read it because of how old his old firmware was.

its not 100% successful but you can try this. turn off the PS3 using the switch behind the console. hold down the eject button and then turn the switch back on from behind and the disc should come out. this worked for some people. sadly, it didn't work for me and my COD MW2 disc is still trapped but give it a shot.

When this happened to my PS3 I didn't bother with the YLOD repair that was available through craigslist because I figured it would just get messed up again. I ended up selling mine to some guy for $160, put in another $140 and bought the new slim model when it just came out. I told him exactly what was wrong and he still bought it. Apparently the 60 gb models are worth a bit more due to true backwards capability, which didn't really matter to me.

yeah a working BC PS3 is worth about 300-350, YLOD is a pretty simple/reliable fix so...

if you guys use some random guys and not sony to fix it. it will void your manufacturer warranty which means sony wont fix it in the future if the guys that fixed it in the first place fucked up. this happened to a friend of mine.
i recently got a YLOD too due to the god damn electrical house fuse keep tripping out. short circuited my PS3 cuz I left it on standby mode. Surge protector didnt do squat. FFFFFFUUUUU
underscore
01-07-2011, 03:45 PM
If it's under warranty - send it in! But if not, who gives a shit about voiding an expired warranty? Sony is also known for accepting out of warranty repair work on items with no seal.

i don't see why anyone would pay more than $200 for BC PS3..even if it they play quite a few PS2 titles on their HDTV. I may not agree if this was 2007 but there aren't many left that spend their gaming time on PS2 titles.
BC PS3's are just ticking bombs for YLOD...even the gutted FAT PS3 (80gb/160gb) are more reliable
underscore
01-08-2011, 02:31 PM
Yeah the Fat BC 60GB was the "hottest" of the PS3's, unless you've got shitty ventilation (which will kill any console eventually) the 60GB is about the only one that can YLOD.
I think it's more of a convenience thing, when I fire up an old N64 game on rare occasion I have to lug everything out and set it up. So if someone likes to play the odd PS2 game (especially if their PS2 broke) then this is quite convenient.
