Study: One in five Canadian children obese

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Canadian kids are packing on the pounds. A recent Stats Canada study found one in five is now considered obese. The study focused on kids between the ages of two and 11.
Dietician and nutrition coach, Ramona Josephson, says parents are the role models but are often in denial that there's even a problem. Josephson adds fast food is easy and it's the french fry that kids love - french fries are also a real problem. "It's the vegetable that's consumed the most and that doesn't really do too well for what's happening. The problem is, is that when a vegetable becomes a receptacle for fat which is what french fries are, it's increasing your total caloric intake."
While fast food outlets are adding healthier choices to their menus, they still fall in the category of what she calls ‘mindless eating.’ "Fast foods are a reality. The fast foods are not as nutritious or as low in calories or as satisfying as healthy foods that are prepared at home."
She says creating a healthy eating environment at home means eating at a table even when snacking - it prevents mindless eating in front of the T.V. She also suggests getting outside and being active.

Fat people are disgusting.
They drive up healthcare costs and people who work hard to live healthy are forced to subsidize these supersized people.
There needs to be a 'fat tax' and fat people should be banned from certain areas (because they are nasty) i.e. downtown.
That is all :D

^ Metrotown isn't all of Canada though. Haha, yeah there's more fat people nowadays..-_-
I don't understand why people would let themselves get to that point, especially parents.
Why wouldn't they cut back on feeding their kids fatty foods if the result is apparent?

Here are the explanations:
- Both parents work long hours, so they don't have any time to prepare nutritious meals.
- Supposedly, it's unsafe for children to do anything outside unless it's excessively supervised. Parents are then forced to spend more money and enroll their kids in expensive sports programs to get their kids active.
- Parents themselves are setting bad examples for their children by not being active themselves.
Speaking from personal experience, I don't think fast food is that bad per se; it's really the inactivity that explains the obesity problem. I ate a tonne of fast food when I was a kid (McD's on a weekly basis.) I gained a bit of weight around 9-11 years of age, but then I hit my growth spurt and the excess fat went down to a manageable level. On the other hand, I was pretty active - I went swimming, I played street hockey and I rode my bike and rollerbladed around the seawall with my parents.

sugary drinks and salty fast foods are always the culprit
eat and drink in moderation and drink lots of water

i was a fat bastard when i was a kid but puberty really trims you down like crazy
hard to believe it's 20% of children i dont remember the last time i saw a young kid who i thought was "obese" chubby is even rare imo but obese?

I think it's based on weight. Some kids don't look fat maybe just a little chubby but they weigh a lot.

uh dude, fast food is terrible. even if you aren't "fat" on the outside, you're "fat" on the inside. You just lucked out with genes

I have a cousin, he's 35 and he's skinny and cut like he works out every day but he doesn't. He use to eat junk food everyday and drink like an idiot on the weekends and always bragged how he can eat and drink whatever and walk around with ripped abs.
Last year he was out playing basketball and he had a heart attack. His arteries were so clogged that the doctor in the ER said he was lucky to be alive because he was due for a fatal heart attack. He's since changed his diet but because he was skinny he thought he was healthy. Eat junk, don't exercise and you'll most likely pay for it later in life no matter what your weight is.

Wow, cyber bullying at its best.
I don't know about some of you guys, but the person being made fun of was really nice to me the few times I've asked people here for help.
I don't think he's a bad person. He made a few mistakes, but so have all of you. I think it's distasteful to put pics of one of the members up on RS and mock them.

LOL that's just a pic he decided to pose like that out of his own will he should expect the consequences.
If you make funny faces for the intarwebs you should know better what's going to come.

I would say he felt very comfortable posing like that for what he probably thought were his good friends at a Revscene meet. Now you know why some people stay away from those kinds of events.
You're right though. Once there's a pic of you on the Internet, it's fair game. Let's see......... I think I have one of you!
Don't worry. I'm not like that. I value other peoples' privacy.
BTW, the person in the picture can take legal action, could he not? It's always the laws that prevent people from doing something wrong. Not the fact it can be hurtful or just plain wrong, morally. Oh well, par for the course. This is, after all, Revscene.

As long as Canada and USA keep following the advice of their "Food Guides" they're only going to get fatter and unhealthier.

what kind of changes do you suggest should be made in canada's food guide? i mean it makes pretty good sense to me. eat mostly veggies, eat more breads and grains (carbs sources) than meats (protein sources) etc. these diets probably won't make you become ronnie coleman anytime soon but it's not meant to do that. its there so you can be healthy.

Parents should put their kids into sports at an early age.. My parents put me into sports early in life, and I am so thankful for that. So many benefits of being on a team other than physical for young ones.

I don't think you are reading the same food guide :lol
They tell you to eat mostly grains and starches (8-10 servings A DAY), which is what makes you fat. Then they say veggies, with a little bit of meat (which is protein and fat, which makes you lean and healthy). These diets will not only NOT make you look like Ronnie Coleman, they are what's leading Canadians and North Americans to turn into fat slobs steadily since the early 80's.
They also recommend avoiding good fat (naturally saturated fat, like animal fat) in favour of "vegetable" oil, which has to be processed so much in order to be edible, that it hardly qualifies as food any more. And they also say that "meat alternatives" are okay.
So yeah, keep following this antiquated advice that is based on gross misinterpretations of scientific data, and watch people get fatter and sicker for the next few decades.

Eat what the asians eat. I remember when I moved out and lived with some white people. Man, I gained like 20 lbs. We ate white people food: pasta, lasagna, fried chicken, steaks, ribs, pizza, sandwiches, a lot of fast food, Kraft dinner and shiet like that.
Moved back home and went back home to moms cooking (shiet loads of vegetables, fish, rice, typical asian stuff). . . and lost 12 lbs. even though I ate the same amount of food.

wow thats diggy? Fast food is ok to eat as long as you work it off. So many lazy fucks these days that just eat and sit around. When I was in elementary school, all I did was play sports. Kids these days just sit on their asses and watch tv, play video games, computer etc... Its rare that I see a younger group of kids playing sports now unless its paid sports.
